Biographies, arranged in alphabetical order, follow the same user-friendly format as found in the preceding volumes in the series. Quick facts consisting of name, year of birth and death (when applicable), and major achievement are followed by profiles containing a blend of personal and professional facts relating to the persons early childhood, educational background, career and achievement, and later life. It is hard to find reference sources particularly earmarked for younger learners in elementary grades and those older students who may be struggling readers. Information is accessible and delivered in a conversational tone. Content is well chosen, with a conscientious effort to support curriculum. Volume 2 will focus on authors, actors, artists, musicians, and entrepreneurs. Highly recommended for school and public libraries. The table of contents lists 37 civil rights, political, and social leaders, organized in alphabetical order with birth and death dates and a phrase or two telling of their main accomplishment(s). This would be a great help to students as they choose whom to research. A brief introduction explains the accomplishments of those included in the book and the category where their achievements best fits, helping the librarian direct students to an appropriate subject for their research assignment. In the body of the biography, students find the major points they want to include in their paper printed in bold capitalized type. Words that are found in the glossary are printed in bold capital letters. The information is accurate, basic, and presented in an interesting way. Each biography ends with a few relevant Web sites. The book concludes with a section of brief biographies of notable African-American leaders who were not included in the main section. This volume from Favorable Impressions, formerly an imprint of Omnigraphics but now an independent publisher, provides updated entries for 29 of the American authors included in the Biography for Beginners series from 1995 to 1997. The cover and entries retain the look and format of the original. The author list includes perennial favorites such as Aliki, Jan and Stan Berenstain, Judy Blume, Eric Carle, Matt Christopher, Ezra Jack Keats, Patricia Polacco, Dr. Seuss, and Rosemary Wells. Entries supply biographical information such as birth date, childhood highlights, education and early jobs; why the person became an author; how the author finds ideas; a highlighted quotation from the author; and personal information about the author's home and family. A selected list of the author's works, a contact address, and Web site address complete the entry. Color is used for many of the author portraits and for reproducing illustrations from their books; this enhances appreciation for many of the artwork details lost in black-and-white reproduction. A name index is followed by Caldecott Medal and Honor Book and Newbery Medal and Honor indexes. The name index, however, is just a table of contents and the awards indexes only list those authors found in the book. Written in an engaging style, the

profiles are also accessible to younger readers as read-aloud material. This volume is an easy way to update the original series and provide reference information for students.

Booklist (November 15, 2003 (Vol. 100, No. 6)) This volume contains 102 entries, arranged in alphabetical order, on people who have broadened our knowledge of the world and is a follow-up to Biography for Beginners: Presidents of the United States(Omnigraphics, 1998). Black-andwhite maps, as well as black-and-white drawings and photographs, appear on nearly every two-page spread. The text is written at a fourth-grade reading level, and the entries are geared toward students "in grades two through five who are studying world explorers for the first time." The text should be very appealing to the early reader, with short, easy-to-read sentences. Exploreris defined here "as someone from the past 2,500 years . . . who left his or her native land and traveled to an area that was unknown to them." Subjects include traditional explorers as well as scientists, astronauts, and mapmakers. There are also summary entries on specific groups whose collective contributions are important to the history of discovery, such as the Phoenicians and the Vikings. Each entry begins with a heading listing the explorer's name, birth and death dates, nationality, and a brief description of the individual's importance to the history of exploration. Certain entries conclude with a list of Internet sites with more information. Some readers may find it confusing that within the articles both cross-references and terms appearing in the glossary are indicated by bold type. Individuals covered range from Hanno of Carthage (c. 500 B.C.E.) to Mae Jemison. Also profiled are Alexander the Great, Kit Carson, Leif Eriksson, and Amerigo Vespucci. The text concludes with a glossary, time line, subject index, and indexes by nationality of explorer and area of exploration. One note: although the text uses the terms Indianand Native Americaninterchangeably, indicating the term Indianis not a pejorative, some readers and communities may feel otherwise. This title would be a useful addition in elementary-school libraries as well as in public libraries.

Familiar individuals, such as Henry Hudson, Vasco Nez de Balboa, Gertrude Bell, and Yuri Gagarin, are profiled, as are the lesser-known Benjamin of Tudela, Pedro Alvares Cabral, Faxian, and Fridtjof Nansen. Average-quality, black-and-white reproductions, photographs, and maps marked with the routes these intrepid men and women followed appear throughout. For the most part, the individuals' lives are presented chronologically, with a summary of their accomplishments at the end. The profiles conclude with Web sites, which will be a good source of primary material. The volume ends with appendixes that list the explorers by nationality and area of exploration, and a chronology that begins at 1100 B.C. A subject index lists main entries in bold print. Peggy Saari and Daniel B. Baker's Explorers and Discoverers (UXL, 1995) is for slightly older students and does not include Web sites. A welcome new entry in the student encyclopedia market, Britannica Student Encyclopedia (BSE) is designed to capture the interest of young information seekers and browsers in grades 37. BSE features a striking cover design in bold colors with an eye-catching, single-image spinescape. Volumes may contain information for more than one letter of the alphabet but do not split letters between volumes. A final volume set index is also included. Each of the encyclopedia volumes begins with a highlighted box of interesting facts one can learn more about within the volume. (Volumes containing more than one letter have these highlighted boxes at the beginning of each letter.) These ageappropriate fun facts include, for example, Almonds are commonly called nuts, but they are actually seeds. Most articles range in length from several paragraphs to several pages. Articles on continents, countries of the world, U.S. states, and Canadian provinces are one to five pages and color-coded. These entries contain highlighted fact boxes, color maps, and color images of the flag. Many also contain a time line. Entries on U.S. presidents all contain a time line as well as information on early life, political career, presidency, and retirement and death (if appropriate). Every world capital also merits an entry, which includes historical information, a map, and population statistics. All entries include More to Explore, a clever title for see also references that direct young researchers to further information within the set. Did You Know? boxes are designed as easels and appear throughout the set, offering interesting and fun facts. BSE contains numerous illustrations, most of which are in color. The final volume is a comprehensive set index. This encyclopedia is remarkably up-to-date, with entries on the new countries of Serbia and Montenegro as well as noting the new status of Pluto. However, this is not the source to consult for tables such as current Nobel Prize or World Series winners or trackand-field record holders. BSE seems to have a clear grasp of the interests of the target audience. Entries can be found on a variety of popular topics, such as Armstrong, Lance; Beckham, David; Bell, Cool Papa; Rowling, J. K.; and Pirates. This attractive and engaging set is a delightful entry into the student-encyclopedia market and a much-needed addition for the age group. A step up from the Heinemann First Encyclopedia, which targets grades K2, BSE is accessible, appealing, and highly browsable. It provides just the right amount of information without overwhelming young researchers and would also work well for older ESL/ELL students or middle-school students reading below grade level. With copious amounts of white space, a large font, and simple sentences, this resource of over 2,200 entries includes colorful pictures, "Did You Know?" callouts, and subheadings throughout the entries of approximately one-to-two pages in length. Continents, countries, U.S. states, and Canadian provinces each have their own entries, color-coded to tell you what geographic unit it is. However, the lack of attention to smaller entities outside of North America demonstrates a lack of material in certain geographic and historical areas. Some countries include timelines, as do the entries for each U.S. president. An interesting feature is the start of each letter, which includes a brief discussion of several words in that letter. Topics are up-to-date and controversial topics are treated with care throughout the volumes. The plethora of images, including charts, tables, maps, photographs, and drawings, will help even the youngest elementary user to understand the materials being presented in the encyclopedia. There lacks, however, bibliographies for the entries to enable the serious researcher a list of resources for further research. Recommended. These articles will interest the career minded, but adults may need to guide the discussion on the Holland Code, Kiersey Temperament Sorter, and Myers-Briggs Type Indicator Assessment tests. Sixteen "Career Cluster Articles" follow, exploring "how individual careers fit into the larger picture of major industries." Next, individual occupations are clearly outlined, covering job requirements, education and training, outlook, online resources, and organizational addresses. Along with the familiar careers are such occupations as agribusiness technicians, histologic technicians, and aquaculturists. Entries reflect the current employment market; for example, under "Newspaper Editors" it's noted that Web-based publications will offer more opportunities. The easy-to-read and colorful fonts, the photos, and the comfortable layout will appeal to readers. In addition, icons link to the "U.S. Department of Education's 16 Career Clusters." These accessible volumes will be invaluable to students. With no more than six words per page, there's plenty of room for the accompanying illustrative "definitions." The layout is inviting, and the two-page foreword will give adults useful information about helping young children expand their vocabulary. School Library Journal (November 1, 2008) PreS-Gr 1-This picture dictionary is intended to introduce children to basic words and concepts. It begins with four pages that show the mischievous monkey receiving the book as a birthday present and learning to use it. The pages that follow have six words each and include abstract notions such as "far," "some," and "before." The definitions are provided through pictures and simple sentences (although some terms, like "ant," "bag," and "dress," have only a picture). When a word has two meanings, for example, "can" and "wave," it has two entries: "The beans are in a can" and "George can paint." Illustrations are done in the style of H. A. Rey's work. This book has use as a resource to introduce the idea of a dictionary, and kids may learn some new words in the process. The volumes begins with an Introducing Mammals section as well as a Mammalian Family Tree. The introduction provides details about the World Conservation Union (IUCN) and an explanation of thecategories in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Entries appear alphabetically, from Aardvark to Wombat. The majority of the entries cover specific species, but there are also broader entries that introduce an entire order of mammals. Some of the broader entries include Bats, Carnivores, Hoofed mammals, and Marsupials. Such entries are noted in bold type in the table of contents. All of the volumes include a volume-specific table of contents, and volumes 15 offer a volume-specific index. Volume 6 contains a comprehensive set index. Each of the more than 100 articles includes a Fact File sidebar that explains the mammals family and order, presents a distribution map, and provides additional key data such as habitat, size, coat, diet, breeding, life span, and status according to the World Conservation Union. Most of the entries are two to four pages in length. Additional sidebars offer extra details. Also, a Did You Know? section introduces interesting tidbits about specific mammals. A color-coded header appears across every two-page spread, indicating whether the mammal is an omnivore, herbivore, or carnivore. The layout is colorful, open, and appealing. Bright photographs and illustrations appear on every two-page spread. The highlighted annotations add to the text. The layout, large text size, and simple explanations would make this book suitable for students in upperelementary as well as middle school. All volumes conclude with a glossary and a listing of further resources, both books and Web sites. This set would be a worthwhile addition to school and public libraries. It is suited for a younger audience than that served by the more comprehensive Exploring Mammals, published by Marshall Cavendish (2007). Library Media Connection (October 2008) This is a very interesting and easy-to-use set of books that explores many types of individual species and also gives an overview of different groups of mammals. The layout is well organized and colorful. There are many features in these volumes that are useful to students who are researching for a report or simply reading to gain a better understanding of the different types of mammals. Each entry has a ?Fact File? that includes where the animal lives, size, life span, and other facts. ?Did You Know? highlights some fun and often surprising facts about the animal. Each volume includes a glossary and a section called Further Resources, which is extremely helpful for students who are doing a research project. I found the content to be just enough to cover the basics for younger readers. The color pictures, diagrams, and maps also add to the content and make this series of books a great choice for any elementary or middle school collection. Recommended. An alphabetical listing of names and places with a brief definition or explanation follows. If one wants to learn more about the country?s mythology in general, though, these books won?t help. The books are well illustrated, with some sort of illustration on most double pages. Unfortunately, not all of the illustrations are on the same page as the term they are illustrating. Splendidly concise and beautifully illustrated, the dictionary contains informative entries that offer enough juicy details to keep high school researchers reading, but never going so far as to be inappropriate for elementary students just discovering the bountiful joys of these ancient tales. Most entries offer brief synopsislike overviews, but major figures (Heracles, Hera, Zeus, and others) and significant stories (Trojan War, "Odyssey," story of Rome) get up to an entire page or more of attention. This edition offers some new material, but it is the addition of color illustrations (nearly 50) drawn from classical and Renaissance art, including marble reliefs, artifacts, mosaics, and the intensely beautiful statues of this glorious age, that marks a significant departure from earlier editions. This volume is comparable to, but not as visually exciting as, Neil Philip's Myths & Legends Explained (DK, 2007), and less text heavy than Michael Stapleton's The Illustrated Dictionary of Greek and Roman Mythology (Random, 1993). Full-Text Reviews Booklist (November 1, 2011 (Vol. 108, No. 5)) Grades 3-6. This collection of 60 biographies of women who made an impact in their fields, often as the first of their gender to do so, is geared to elementary-school children. Although women from many time periods and cultures are included, three-fourths of the biographies are of Americans. Each 6- to 10-page article is accompanied by well-chosen illustrations of the women. For those from the last century and a half, these often include a portrait to begin the article as well as pictures from childhood and from the field. The article on Jane Goodall, for example, includes a picture of her as a toddler with a toy chimpanzee, followed by photos of her observing real apes in Africa. The articles themselves are written at the appropriate level for elementary-school to middle-grade students and divided into sections that use bold type for the first few words to catch the readers eye. The use of quotes from the subjects and others enhances the biographies and makes them more personal. The articles do not shy away from controversies in each womans life, and the contributors do a good job of summing up the issues in a way younger readers can understand. A glossary, brief biographies of a dozen other women, a time line, and an index follow the main part of the book. There are some punctuation errors, and Maya Lin is referred to as Mia in one case. A number of the websites listed after each biography do not work, often because of a transcription error. Sites that could be found often were written for older audiences. However, the biographies themselves serve as solid resources for young researchers. Library Media Connection (March/April 2012) This new volume consists of 60 thorough, readable biographies of women from ancient times (Cleopatra) to the present (Hilary Rodham Clinton). Beginning with a photograph and dates, and ending with a paragraph on the subject's legacy and websites for further inquiry, these brief biographies are quite detailed. They have made outstanding contributions to politics (Hatshepsut, Margaret Thatcher); social reform and human rights (Sojourner Truth, Aung San Suu Kyi); science, medicine, and innovation (Marie Curie, Mae Jemison); literature, art, and music (Harriet Beecher Stowe, Maya Lin), or athletics (Babe Zaharias Didrikson, Jackie Joyner Kersee). The clearly written, alphabetically arranged entries, which feature boldfaced headings and a large type for ease of reading, include information on the woman's childhood, education, early interests, marriage and family, career, and legacy. Each entry includes reproductions of portraits and photos and some also feature first-person quotations. The pieces are followed by recommendations for online further-reading; the Web sites are well-chosen and credible.
