Tico Structural Bearings Vibration isolation of structures using Tico Structural Bearings
Tico Structural Bearings provide a maintenance free resilient barrier for the isolation of structures from ground borne noise and vibration. Typical CV/CA installation showing the fail-safes and bearing spacing to allow for bulge.

Key advantages
Supplied in virtually any size to suit specific conditions, so that the bearings can be engineered to give the required response. Can be supplied for a variety of construction methods from modular bearings on pile caps to continuous bearings in strip footings. Bearings can be fitted above or below ground level to suit the engineers requirements. Available in a number of grades. Suitable for a wide variety of applications from large buildings to light internal structures. All bearings manufactured from high quality constituents. The resilient mounting of any structure should be considered at an early stage to enable a safe, effective and economic design to be engineered. It is not possible to give a simple guide to the dynamic behaviour of a resiliently mounted structure, and advice should be sought from a consulting engineer experienced in this field. However, our Tico Structural Bearings department will be happy to assist where possible.

Typical design for a studio or isolated room using the box within a box principle.

General principles
The dynamic behaviour of a mounted system can be extremely complicated and is affected by many factors, such as: Roof slab

Stiffness of structure. Weight of structure. Disturbing frequency. Isolation frequency. Strain amplitude.

Wall supported on floor slab

Mineral Wool

Low frequency bearings (CV/LF)

Floating floor slab

To achieve a major reduction in noise transmission to a structure it is necessary to isolate the structure by the introduction of resilient bearings.

Recording studio.(Courtesy of Recording Architecture.)

It will be appreciated that the selection of bearings for a particular application is dependent on many factors. It is our custom to work closely with consultants or other authorised bodies to ensure that we provide a bearing best suited to the application.

Tico Bondslip Sliding Bearings

Ideal choice for accommodating large lateral movements, particularly if associated with high vertical loads

Advantages and properties

Maintenance-free sliding surfaces. Excellent wear and abrasion resistance. Tailored to suit individual applications. Comparable with the service life of the structure. Can be supplied ready bonded to steel backing plate for quick on-site installation. Excellent chemical and weather resistance. Low coefficient of friction between two sliding surfaces. Supplied with all characteristics of the resilient substrate for vibration and noise attenuation.

Supply details
Tico Bondslip bearings are manufactured to customers specific requirements and will generally comprise an upper and a lower component. It is normal to supply the sliding bearings with the upper nylon component having a larger plan area than the lower resiliently backed PTFE unit. This is to allow for the anticipated movement of the bearing and also to act as an umbrella, thus preventing detritus from collecting on the sliding surface. Our Tico Structural Bearings department will be pleased to advise on specific designs and the selection of materials.

The Thames Flood Barrier, London, UK.

Bondslip identification
It is an advantage, and of considerable benefit to the installer if the bearings are supplied individually identified, particularly when a variety of sizes are employed. Bondslip units can be supplied pre-marked, each with their respective location or grid position.

Tico Critical Frequency Pads

For several decades Tiflex have been manufacturing materials which were specially developed to meet the demands of applications where low frequencies are the critical factor. Tico CV/LF materials are able to isolate vibration and provide a natural frequency as low as 10Hz. However, Tico CV/LF materials, due to their construction, are fairly inflexible in the sizes at which they can be supplied.

Typical Applications:
Floating Floors Room within a room systems Isolated foundations Where the isolation of low frequencies are critical

Tiflex have recognised this and have now developed a new range of structural bearing products which not only can be entirely flexible in their size and where necessary thickness, but also can achieve a natural frequency under load of 8Hz. This could provide significant advantages where attenuation of vibration is critical. This range of products is called Tico CV/CF.

Key Features:
Unsurpassed isolation at low frequencies Complete flexibility of supply High lateral stability Will isolate structures from ground borne vibration Two grades to suit the majority of applications Rapid installation No mechanical parts to maintain Should be used in conjunction with Tico adhesives Can be provided as part of a full vibration attenuation package including fail safes etc. A standard range of sizes held in stock Bespoke sizes available on request
