Dear Harford Leaguers and Friends, This issue of the Harford Voter comes a little later this month because we have been BUSY, BUSY, BUSY with many pre-election activities. Now comes the time for reflection, and I am extremely proud of our board and members for the energy and commitment they put into League business which was done cheerfully and competently. We fulfilled our goal of public awareness and education as we organized and sponsored the Know Your Vote event at Harford Community College with the help of the Harford Chapter of the AAUW and the college Political Awareness Association as well as through our production and distribution of the online and print 2012 General Election Voters Guides. In addition we were invited to and addressed several county organizations and groups about the many ballot issues. Through all of these endeavors we became better educated ourselves. During Early Voting and on Election Day we evaluated Harfords precincts and were privileged to see organized functioning, and well-trained, courteous election judges amid long lines of voters. We know this good outcome does not just happen; it takes effort, organization and commitment by our Board of Election. And we say Kudos to all of who worked to bring about an overall smoothly run election here in Harford on November 6. After a short breather, we look forward to educational and advocacy challenges which are sure to come next. In December and January there will be interesting programs presented by LWVMD. Closer to home, please see the description of Windfall, the next film in our series, and join us at Harford Community College on November 29. I hope to see you there.

Supreme Court Set to Review Voting Rights Act

Statement by Elisabeth MacNamara, National President of the League of Women Voters Washington, D.C. Today, the Supreme Court decided to review the constitutionality of the Voting Rights Act. In a week when American democracy was on display for all the world, this action by the Court is a huge step in the wrong direction. The Voting Rights Act is an essential part of American democracy. The thought that the Supreme Court might overrule Congress and take away voting rights should send a chill down the spine of every American. The Voting Rights Act ensures that every American has an equal right to vote. With the problems in our election system exposed once again this week, the Supreme Court should be enforcing voting rights, not taking them away. From LWV.org
