PART-A 1. (a) Explain the operation of 3-point starts used in the DC motors with neat diagram. (b) A short shunt compound generator supplies 200 A at 100 V. The resistance of armature, series field and shunt field is 0.04 , 0.03 , and 60 respectively. Find emf generated. 2. (a) Define and write the expressions for efficiency and regulation of single phase transformers. (b) A single phase transformer has 350 primary and 1050 secondary turns. The net c.s.area of the core in 55 cm2. If the primary winding in connected to a 400 V, 50 Hz single phase supply. (b) Describe with neat diagram a closed cycle gas turbine, state also its merits and demerits. 7. (a) Derive the equation for shaft work for two stage compressor with perfect inter cooling for without clearance when law of compression followed is pvn =c. ***** PART-A 1. (a) Explain the principle of operation of DC generator. (b) A lap wound DC shunt generator having 80 slots with 10 conductors per slot generator at no load an emf of 400 V. When running at 1000 rpm. At what speed should it be rotated to generate a voltage of 220 V on open circuits. 2. (a) Derive the emf equation of single phase transformer. (b) The single phase transformer working at unity power factor has an efficiency of 80 % at both one half loads and at the full load of 1000 W. PART B 5. (a) What do you understand by gas welding? Describe is brief the equipment required for oxyacetylene welding. (b) Explain the process of soldiering and brazing. 6. (a) Explain with suitable sketches the working of a four stroke Otto engine. (b) Describe with neat sketches the working of a simple constant pressure open cycle gas turbine. 7. (a) In a two stage compressor, prove that the work done per kg of air is minimum with perfect inter cooling when the intermediate pressure is the geometric mean of the suction and delivery pressure. (b) A belt is running over a pulley of diameter 120 cm at 200 rpm. The angle of contact is 165 and coefficient of friction between the belt and pulley is 0.3. If the maximum tension in the belt a 300 N , find the power transmitted by the belt. 8. (a) Explain the important components of a simple vapour compressions refrigeration system. ***** PART-A 1. (a) Derive the Torque equation of DC motor. (b) A 4 pole DC shunt generator with lap connected armature supplies a load of 100 A at 200 V. The armature resistance in 0.1 and the shunt field resistance is 80 . Find (i) Total armature current (ii) current per armature path and (iii) emf generated. 2. (a) Explain the losses that occur in single phase transformers. (b) A single phase transformers working at unity power factor has an efficiency of 90% at both half load and at full load of 500 W. Determine the efficiency at 75% of full load. 3. Explain the procedure to find regulation by synchronous impedance method with neat circuit diagram. Explain the operation of permanent magnet moving coil type instruments with neat diagram.

PART B 5. (a) How welding process are classified? Explain briefly. (b) Sketch and explain the submerged arc welding and also state its advantages and disadvantages. 6. (a) Discuss the following relating to steam turbines. (i) Speed ratio (ii) Black velocity coefficient. (iii) Diagram efficiency (iv) Stage efficiency (b) In what respects four stroke diesel cycle engine differ from four stroke cycle spark ignition engine. 7. (a) Explain with help of neat sketch the working of a single stage reciprocating air compressor. (b) In a crossed belt drive, the diameters of the driver and follower pulleys are 200 mm and 400 mm respectively. The center distance of the drive is 2 m. The drive pulley rotates at 400 rpm. Find the angle of contact between belt and both pulleys and the length of the belt requires. What is the power capacity of the drive, if the permissible tension in the belt is 1.2 KN and the coefficient of frictions between the belt and both the pulleys is 0.25? 8. (a) What is the main function of ducting? Explain different types of ventilation systems. (b) What are the advantages of using mechanical handling equipments? Explain the concrete mixer. *****

(b) Compare the relative advantages and disadvantages of four stroke and two-stroke cycle engines. 7. (b) Derive an expression for the velocity ratio of a belt drive considering thickness of the belt. 8. (a) Define a refrigerant. Discuss how the refrigerants are selected for refrigeration systems.
