Assignment Title 1C Electronic Structure and the Periodic Table In this assessment you will have the opportunities to provide evidence against the following criteria. Please indicate the page numbers where the evidence can be found
Criteria reference P3
To achieve the criteria the evidence must show that you are able to: Describe atomic structures of elements 1-20, found in the periodic table
Task No
Page No
P4
Carry out an investigation into the chemical properties of elements in groups 1 and 7
M3
Describe the trends within the atomic structure of groups 1 and 7 in the periodic table
M4
Explain why the elements of groups 1 and 7 are mostly used in the form of compounds
D2
Explain the trends in the chemical behavior of the elements of groups 1 and 7 in relation to the electronic structure

Unit 1: Chemistry and Our Earth BTEC Level 2 Extended Certificate in Applied Science
The purpose of this assignment is to: Enable you demonstrate your understanding of the atomic structure of the first 20 elements in the periodic table and allow you to demonstrate the trends within groups 1 and 7
Scenario: You work at Greenwich University and you have been asked to produce a display explaining the structure of the periodic table in relation to electronic structure and reactivity. You need to make your display easy to read, clear and colorful. Task 1 You need to produce a poster which describes the atomic structure of the first 20 elements, you need to describe what an isotope is and give 2 examples of isotopes To achieve the merit criterion you need to describe the shell of electrons then explain how they fill and when another add on in relation to the first 20 elements To achieve the distinction criterion you need to explain the differences in reactivity of the alkali metals and of the halogens in relation to their electronic structure This provides evidence for P3, M3 & D2 Task 2 You need to investigate the different chemical properties of the group 1 and 7 elements, place them in order of reactivity within the groups. To achieve the merit criterion you need to explain why group 1 and 7 are usually stored and used as compounds, give examples of each and the associated dangers This provides evidence for P4 & M4
