Unit Title Unit 2: Energy and Our Universe Qualification BTEC Level 2 Extended Certificate in Applied Science Welling School Science Dept L2 BTEC Applied Science Start date Deadline date Assessor Assignment Title 2B Waves and Radiation

The purpose of this assignment is to: Enable you to appreciate waves and their properties and demonstrate your knowledge of electromagnetic waves and radiation and their uses in society

Scenario: You are a trainee scientist who is looking at different types of waves and radiation and their applications in our society. Task 1 Describe and draw a poster of the electromagnetic spectrum, include all the different parts and examples of uses of each. Carry out practical investigations that demonstrate different parts of the electromagnetic spectrum, set up the practical equipment to safely investigate the following: Splitting white light with a prism Use of a UV light Infrared (sending pictures on a mobile) Produce a risk assessment for each activity using the forms provided. Your teacher will provide a witness statement to confirm that you carried out the experiments safely and correctly Produce a report for each experiment, including a list of equipment and apparatus used, your method, a table of your results and a conclusion explaining how this relates to the electromagnetic spectrum. Produce notes on the demo of ionising radiation and its different penetrating abilities, include all of the above, use both lots of information to produce a leaflet which describes the different types of radiation (including ionising and non-ionising radiation) ensure you describe the following radioactive sources: Alpha Beta Gamma Produce a risk assessment for each of the radioactive sources using the forms provided. Produce a report for each experiment, including a list of equipment and apparatus used, your method, a table of your results and a conclusion. This provides evidence for P3 and P4 Task 2 You need to produce a leaflet which details applications of ionized and non-ionised radiation (i.e. treatment of cancer, use in smoke alarms etc). You need to research this and make the leaflet interesting and easy to read This provides evidence for M2 SDN Task 3 You need to add a section to your leaflet which explains the positive and possible negative effects of ionising and non-ionising radiation. This needs to be informative and complete, include diagrams,
