South Effingham High School Monthly Activities Report 2012-2013

The SEHS Media Center is very active. Each month, the media center staff completes not only the normal day to day functions of a school media center, but also has fundraisers, special events, book club meetings, and much more. The SEHS Media Center staff is comprised of two media specialists and a library media clerk. This report will outline the day to day schedule of the SEHS Media center and many of the activities of the SEHS Media Center.

8am -5:30pm Monday - Friday Media Center Open


Check books and other media center materials in and out Reshelf returned books Coordinate scheduling of the media center with teachers for class visits to the media center, media center computer lab, and computer resource lab. Oversee individual student that come to the media center to check out books, perform research, work on computers, work puzzles, play chess, etc Prepare the teacher workroom Prepare book displays Be available to help students find materials, help students with computers, help students produce assignments and projects. Conduct classes such as Media Center Orientation class and other classes requested by teachers. Collaborate with teachers on subject matter being taught and Media Center Support Prepare reports concerning circulation of material, missing books, overdue books, budget, expense reports, etc Order materials as needed Holiday decorations set up per month to go with the monthly holiday. Credit Recovery services held in the library facilities after school four days a week (M-TH) Testing held in library facilities as needed Operate Library Store by selling misc supplies, such as index cards, pens, mechanical pencils, jump drives, notebooks, poster board, etc. Monitor, assess, and complete technology help requests (Sysaids) Set up and run for Audio/Video equipment for school wide assemblies, programs, and pep rallies. Update school and media center web pages Prepare and post daily announcements via Slide rocket Photograph school events for school web page Provide instruction to teachers and students on how to use Media Center Equipment such as the Ellison Machine and laminator Laminate materials for faculty and staff Decorate bulletin boards in media center and school hallways Reset student, faculty, and staff computer passwords as needed Administer grade level and school wide surveys Oversee and judge various contests such as the Red Ribbon Week poster contest Ac as facilitator/Moderator for standardized tests as needed Media Clerk acts as emergency substitute fill in for teachers

Other Media Center/Book Club sponsored events that offer prizes or awards:
1. Musical Entertainer Tribute Week: Sept. 4-7, 2012 Michael Jackson, Elvis Presley, Whitney Houston, Johnny Cash! SEHS students are invited to participate in daily trivia questions on each musician to win prizes. Prizes will be paid for with Star Book Club account (8137) funds. Film Star/Entertainer Tribute Week: Jan. 14-18, 2013 During fall meetings, Book Club students will pick 5 entertainers to feature during this upcoming winter tribute week! Students will be invited participate in daily trivia questions on each film star to win prizes. Prizes will be paid for with Star Book Club account (8137) funds. 2. Library Gold Star Winner Awards: Ongoing for past 4 years, each week media center staff selects a student library gold star winner from a jar of student entry slips from students who participate in library programs. Library Gold Star Winners receive a $5 Gift Card to the Stang Zone. A $250 Star budget transfer between Media Star accounts 8136 or 8137 and Stang Zone account covers the cost of 50 winners throughout the year. 3. Georgia Student Media Festival: In conjunction with Effingham County School District, the GA Student Media Festival projects are due in February/March each year (2013). Open to all SEHS students. Teachers recommend student projects for judging. Student can win at school, district, state and international levels. Entries are free at school, district and state levels and $25 per entry at international level. Star library media fund accounts pay for international submissions in May or June of each year (2013). Students receive a Media Festival certificate for each level they achieve. 4. National Library Week/Childrens Book Week: In conjunction with the Effingham County School District and the Live Oak Public Library Childrens Book Festival Week. Media Center will participate in the activities of the week long event along with district. Date to be determined by district, usually in mid-November. Trivia questions related to books and authors will be highlighted and students will be invited to participate this years theme: Southern Writers per a prior suggestion from Dr. Winters. 3 prizes will be given at the end of the week from the Trivia question drawing. Prizes paid for from Media Star accounts (8136 or 8137).
The information for the upcoming Childrens Book Week tied into the public library: Nov. 10-16. We are securing Fiona Page, an author from Atlanta to speak on her two books: My Nightlife is 24/7 and Bettina the Bold.

5. High Library Reader Achievement Awards and Book Club Scholarships: In conjunction with the SEHS School Achievement Awards Assembly at the close of the school year. A. High readers are picked based on the number of media center library books the students read throughout the school year. Destiny library student accounts tract the reading statistics of each student. A report is run monthly and yearly. Student winners are awarded a reading achievement academic medal to recognize their accomplishment. Medals or certificates are selected along with other school achievement medals in conjunction with counselor staff. B. Book Club scholarships are awarded based on student participation in the Book Club and dedication to the Book Club activities and goals throughout a students 4 (+/-) year enrollment at SEHS. Scholarship awards and amounts will vary each year. 6. We also host the Books are Fun or Turtle Express Books displays in the media center every 2 to 3
weeks. We receive free books in exchange for hosting the display in our library. We earn about 8 free books per month from both of these companies (3-4 books each generally). This is another fundraiser.
