Title: Pesticide made from radish extract vs. Baygon

Introduction: 1. Background Radishes are root vegetables with an edible, hot tasting flesh that can either be red, white, or purple. The different parts of the root or plant can be used in different ways. The leaves and the roots can be added to a vegetable salad. Radishes were apparently native to China. It then advanced to the Mediterranean region before the Greek era and was introduced to the recent world in the 16th century. Radishes mostly grow in Asia, Europe, and America. It was also beloved and adored by the ancient Egyptians, Greeks, and Chinese. A radish has only a little food value in it. It is used mainly as a relish or to garnish salads. Radishes are one of the easiest garden vegetables to grow, but they should be given in a good rich soil in order for them to be healthy and nutritious. Aside from food, it is dried for juice extraction which can be made into a pesticide. Radishes have allyl isothiocyanate (AITC), a compound that is very similar to capsaicin. This compound can kill common pests like ants and aphids. Baygon is a pesticide brand produced by S.C. Johnson & Son. It is a pesticide used for the extermination of common household pests like ants, cockroaches, spiders, etc. Too much exposure and inhalation of Baygon can cause a lot of serious and harmful health issues. It can cause skin and respiratory problems, and also severe damage to the nervous system.

2. Scope and limitation This project focuses on the implementation of the radish extract as a pesticide against common pests like ants. Some experimentation was done and it was applied in affected and contaminated Guyabano plants and sugar apple fruit. 3. Statement of objectives General objectives 1.) to use a vegetable extract as an pesticide 2.) to propose an alternative pesticide vs. harmful pesticide (Baygon)

Specific objective 1.) to produce pesticide out of radish extract and to know its effectiveness 4. Methodology Materials/Equipment The materials that we need to use are a mortar and pestle, an empty bottle sprayer, a clean cloth, a knife, a bowl, one kilogram of red or white radish tubers, a star apple/caimito affected by ants (we used star apple because it is one of the most common fruits), one liter of pure radish extract, and 250 ml of 1:2 proportions, 250 ml of 1:1 proportion, 250 ml of 2:1 proportion, extract to water. Treatment/General Procedure Prepare all the materials needed first. Then wash the radish tubers to remove the dirt. Next, slice them into small pieces and pound using a mortar and pestle. Put it in a clean cloth, and get the extract. Then, add enough water to extract using the mentioned ratio. Place each mixture in a sprayer bottle and apply it to the affected star apple. Try it for several trials to know the most effective proportion. Lastly, record all of your observations. 5. Citations / References Pesticide made from radish extract.
