Concerning the input to learners, the 4 tasks of unit 7 in both World Link and Engage bear some similarities and differences. As for the similarities, the 4 tasks of unit 7 in both sets of materials do not contain oral extended discourse. Specifically, all the tasks do not offer any texts of spoken words such as dialogues. Besides, in terms of written words/phrases/sentences, the tasks in both materials do offer lists of linguistic items. For example, in task 1 of World Link, ways of telling the time are listed; or in task 1 of Engage, a list of some verb phrases is provided. As for the differences, there are some disparities between the two sets of tasks in terms of graphic, oral words/phrases/sentences, Written extended discourse, and Sounds/Music. Regarding graphic, unit 7s tasks in World Link offer more pictures than those in Engage.

Another difference is that the pictures in World Link are derived from real-world objects such as task 3 whereas those in Engage do not. Furthermore, there is also a distinction between the two sets of tasks in terms of oral words/phrases/sentences. Specifically, task 2 and 4 in World Link offer some prompts to learners for a speaking activity whereas the 4 tasks in Engage do not. In addition, the 4 tasks in World Link do not offer any written texts to learners while task 4 in Engage does include a short story. Moreover, in terms of sounds, the tasks in Engage offer more listening activities than those in World Link. Specifically, there are 3 tasks in Engage requiring learners to listen and only 1 task in World Link asks learners to do so. Concerning the expected output from learners, there are some similarities and differences between the tasks in World Link and Engage. As for the similarities, in all the tasks in both materials, learners are not expected to produce any pictures in terms of graphic and write any stories in terms of written extended discourse. Another similarity is that learners are expected to produce oral words/phrase/sentences in task 2 World Link (learners take turns asking the time with a partner) and task 1 Engage (learners are asked to repeat phrases). As for the differences, there are some disparities between the tasks in terms of Oral extended discourse and Written words/phrases/sentences. In respect of Oral extended discourse, learners doing task 4 in World Link are expected to be able to discuss with their classmates some activities they would like to do whereas learners are not expected to do so in all the 4 tasks in Engage. Another difference lies in the feature Written words/phrases/sentences. While learners are not expected to write down words, phrases, or sentences in doing the tasks in World Link, learners doing task 1, 2, 3 in Engage are expected to write down verb phrases in task 1; prepositions in task 2 and verbs in task 3.
