Roberta J. Sarnacki, Chief of Police Otis Police Department, 1 North Main Road, Otis, MA 01253 As November is the month of Thanksgiving, I want to turn this (413)-269-0100, ext. 6 editions Chiefs Corner into one giant thank you list. There is much rsarnacki@gmail.com to be thankful for, and I would just like to recognize some of those Office hours: Wed 7 PM-8:30 PM who make our town what it is (Or by Appointment) I wanted to start out by thanking the town for all of their support in our first attempt at Kops N Kids N Costumes. We had over 200 kids, which is probably some kind of record for Otis. It was absolutely amazing how much everyone pitched in to help. I owe BIG THANK YOUS to the following people: Michele Pettibone, Suzanne Kresiak, Jill Moretz, Donny Moretz, Marilee & Jim Higgins, Dan Hamill, David Hamill, Linda Hamill, Ken Pettibone, Marissa Pettibone, Rebecca Beham, John Mullen, Sara Saloomey-Loring, Star Saloomey O'Brien, Tammy Saloomey-Tavernia, Joanna Saloomey-Bailey, Lisa D'orazio, Kayla Moore, Robin Campetti, Suzanne, Sam & Madeline Kresiak, Riley & Keelin Bailey, Erin OBrien, Blaze Tavernia, Meg, Will & Charlie Loring, Maggy & Lizzy Sarnacki, and Dave Sarnacki. These guys are the ones who really went above and beyond, and many put in an incredible amount of hours running around, putting up, taking down, securing donations, baking cupcakes, etc. Even though this was our first time taking on an event of this magnitude, these guys made it look like we have been doing it for years! I would also like to extend my thanks to the BRP Foundation & Dana MacKenzie, who made a very generous donation to our organization in memory of Danas son, Brett Robert Peck. Thanks, too, to a very special community member for their wonderful donation to the Kops N Kids program as well. Thank you to Tommy Soules for his extraordinary D.J. skills! Kids were limboing, macarenaing, chicken dancing, and electric sliding all night! Thank you to the Lee and Great Barrington Price Choppers, the Lee Big Y, the Lee Dunkin Donuts, and the Spirit Halloween store of Pittsfield, for their valuable donations to our party. As I write this, the town is still cleaning up from Hurricane Sandy. We are so fortunate that we made it through relatively unscathed. I would like to thank all of the Otis Emergency Management team for their efforts throughout the storm. The Highway Department did an especially good job on Monday and Tuesday cutting up trees in order to reopen roads. I personally witnessed them cutting up or removing numerous different trees, and they did this in record time. Once one tree was cut up, it was only a matter of minutes before we were dispatched to another. Thanks for your hard work and for keeping our roads safe! Thank you to the crews from Western Mass Electric company, as well as to all of their contractors from far away states. WMECO did a fabulous job of keeping the Emergency Management team informed, and several representatives called me personally, to make sure I had a cell phone contact of someone who would answer it throughout the nights of the storm. I do believe that everyone now has power back. Most outages were short lived, although I know there were a few in outlying areas who lost it for a couple of days. However, when you look at how people in New Jersey and New York were affected, our outages and damage were minor, and this is something that all of us have to be thankful for. We will be Reopening on Nov. 24 Lastly, thank you to all of the officers of the Otis Tuesday thru Sunday 9a-4p Police Department, and the members of the Otis Fire Department, and Otis Rescue Squad. I witnessed yet ************ another team effort last night. Not at all surprising, yet very worthy of a thank you. The pieces fit together nicely, each and every time. Thank you! All of us at the Police Department would like to wish Starting at $40 you and your families a very Happy Thanksgiving. Since ********************* the next Chiefs Corner wont be out until January, we hope that you all have very Merry Christmases, and Home Made Kissing Balls happy Hanukkahs! Please stay safe!

jar. Even the summer when Dad got laid off from the mill, and Mama had to serve dried beans several times a week, not a single dime was taken from the jar. To the contrary, as Dad looked across the table at me, pouring catsup over my beans to make them more palatable, he became more determined than ever to make a way out for me 'When you finish college, Son,' he told me, his eyes glistening, 'You'll never have to eat beans again - unless you want to. The years passed, and I finished college and took a job in another town. Once, while visiting my parents, I used the phone in their bedroom, and noticed that the pickle jar was gone. It had served its purpose and had been removed. A lump rose in my throat as I stared at the spot beside the dresser where the jar had always stood. My dad was a man of few words: he never lectured me on the values of determination, perseverance, and faith. The pickle jar had taught me all these virtues far more eloquently than the most flowery of words could have done. When I married, I told my wife Susan about the significant part the lowly pickle jar had played in my life as a boy. In my mind, it defined, more than anything

else, how much my dad had loved me. The first Christmas after our daughter Jessica was born, we spent the holiday with my parents. After dinner, Mom and Dad sat next to each other on the sofa, taking turns cuddling their first grandchild Jessica began to whimper softly, and Susan took her from Dad's arms. 'She probably needs to be changed,' she said, carrying the baby into my parents' bedroom to diaper her. When Susan came back into the living room, there was a strange mist in her eyes. She handed Jessica back to Dad before taking my hand and leading me into the room. 'Look,' she said softly, her eyes directing me to a spot on the floor beside the dresser. To my amazement, there, as if it had never been removed, stood the old pickle jar, the bottom already covered with coins. I walked over to the pickle jar, dug down into my pocket, and pulled out a fistful of coins. With a gamut of emotions choking me, I dropped the coins into the jar. I looked up and saw that Dad, carrying Jessica, had slipped quietly into the room. Our eyes locked, and I knew he was feeling the same emotions I felt. Neither one of us could speak.

First, resolve to enjoy your food savor the flavor! This is an important step, because when we take a minute to inhale the smells of freshly roasted squash, or anything sauted in garlic and onions, or those freshly baked chocolate chip cookies, we slow down our eating. Eating slowly helps us to digest our food better, and most of us eat less when we slow down and savor. I know how hard it can be to find the time to actually sit down to a meal and enjoy, but now more than ever, its a good habit to get into. Another good practice is to take a walk with your family either before or after a big meal. When family and friends gather for a big meal, like Thanksgiving, its a good time to enjoy a brisk walk through the neighborhood. This tradition also shows the children and grandchildren that exercise is an important part of the holidays. Some families include an afternoon of skiing, skating, sledding or touch football after their big meal. Any exercise that you include will help you burn off a few of those extra calories, so plan something fun that your whole family will enjoy this holiday season. Eating an apple about an hour before your meal helps fill you up and also improves digestion, so when you know youre going out for a holiday party

where there will be huge amounts of food, eat an apple on the way. You will enjoy your meal without feeling so full that you need a wheelbarrow to get you home afterwards! Drink plenty of water, especially when partaking of the holiday punch, cocktails, or wine. Drink a large glass of water between each of your holiday drinks and youll drink less. Also, stay away from the eggnog. One little cup of eggnog contains 343 calories and 11 grams of saturated fat Yikes! I usually allow myself one at Thanksgiving and one at Christmas, and I use a low fat version of eggnog! The Horizon brand low fat eggnog has about half the fat and only 260 calories. The importance of drinking enough water during our Berkshire winters cannot be stressed enough. Winter's wind and the dry heat inside our homes can dry us out both inside and out. And because of the cold, we often dont feel like drinking water, however, our body still needs as much water as in summer to keep our organs, muscles and glands functioning properly. More information on hydration for the largest organ in our body - our skin, can be found in my new eBook Beautiful, Sexy Skin For Women Over 40 - What The Cosmetic Companies Dont Want You To Know About Skin Care!

I see many people each year who starve themselves all day or for a couple of days in anticipation of a big family meal or holiday party. They think that if they dont eat anything all day, it will make up for the extra calories at the feast. The opposite is actually true. Our bodies need nutrients on a regular basis every day and when we dont give our body what it needs, it begins to break down our muscle for fuel and also slows down metabolism. The net effect of these measures means that when we go back to eating regularly, our body wants to store up fat for the next time we starve ourselves and so were likely to gain a few pounds. A better idea altogether, is to eat a few smaller meals during the day that include a little bit of protein and veggies but no bread or pasta. So dont stress out about a few pounds! Ive been on this planet for over 60 years and each holiday season I put on a few pounds. Then, I continue another great holiday tradition of making New Years resolutions to take the weight off in January. Instead, enjoy the holidays, knowing that youll get back to healthy eating and your regular exercise routine, and that youll be back to your pre -holiday weight in no time! Wishing You Happy, Healthy Holidays! Kathi

has been granted in the past, and Lisa will work for the Select Board on Thursday, November 8th to make up her missing time for the Select Board if the board approves this request. The Board unanimously approved this change in Lisas schedule for those two days. Discussion of the Halloween Observance: Members of Kiwanis were here to discuss having the Halloween Party for the kids on Sunday the 28th. They then informed the board that they may have to vote to disband because they only have about seven active members and their charter requires sixteen members, so they may need to cancel all future events. They plan to meet on Thursday to determine whether or not Kiwanis would remain in the community or disband. Roberta Sarnacki reiterated that the Friday Kops N Kids event was set up because the public was expecting Trick or Treat to be on Friday night as usual, and it was meant to be in addition to the Kiwanis event. If Kiwanis votes to remain a viable community organization, the board is certain we can get
enough volunteers to help get the Sunday Kiwanis event ready. Other: United Nations Day: In the recent past, the Town has recognized United Nations Day and again unanimously agreed to recognize October 24th for this year as well and signed the declaration. Tom Matuszko from BRPC: Brian invited Tom to come to tonights meeting and present to the board some of the grant possibilities available to us through BRPC, such as the Community Innovation Challenge, the Community Development Block Grant, and the District Local Technical Assistance program. Tom also gave examples of how these programs were made use by some of our neighboring towns, including putting Building permits online and handling beaver management and planning a Senior Center. Wind Turbine Balloon Test: The balloon test was performed today. It was a diribible that was bright blue with yellow fins and was easily recognizable. It could be seen from a few places in town, but unless you were on top of a ridge, it was difficult to see. The Select Board meeting was immediately adjourned at 8:04 pm.

Pasta Fagioli
Ok, this recipe will serve about 6-8 people. 2 meaty ham hocks (this is what gives it the flavor, no substitutes) 6 celery stalks, chopped, also, use the celery leaves in soup 1 small can of tomato sauce (you will only use 4-5 tbsps of this ) 6 large garlic cloves, chopped 4 tbsp olive oil -salt and pepper to taste 1 tbsp oregano, ( you will add more as this cooks ) oregano gives this dish great flavor 1 bag dried navy beans ( you will be cooking them in with all of these ingredients for 3 hours ) 8-10 cups of water 1 bunch of fresh chopped parsley ( flat leaf parsley ) 1 box of ditalini pasta This is it. Put all ingredients in a large pot, and turn on high until it all comes to a boil. Once it does, lower heat, and allow soup to simmer for 2-1/2 to 3 hours, until the beans are cooked, and all flavors have blended nicely. Leave hamhocks in the soup the entire time to achieve the right flavors. Do not add the pasta until everything has cooked for at least 2 1/2 hours, and those beans are fully cooked. Keep tasting them, and once they are cooked, add pasta until al dente and serve with some nice crusty italian bread. As you cook this, you may find you will need to add more water cause the beans absorb alot of water as they cook. You do not want it to be too watery or dry. As you add water, taste to also see if you need more salt, a little more pepper, and maybe a dash or two of garlic powder also. Even though you have garlic cloves, you can add garlic powder also, cause it's what makes the flavor, I do it all the time. The sauce is added to give it the thick texture, so make sure you use it ok? Not the whole can, just a few tbsps. The pasta Fagioli should have a nice pink color when it is all done. Stopping by the covered bridge on Rt. 8 in New Boston yesterday I snapped a few pictures. When I viewed them later , something suddenly became evident to me. We often need to take a few steps back to see the whole picture clearly. Other times we need to take a few steps forward to see "The Hole Picture", clearly.
