The distance between the planes A and X is 100 mm, bet ween X and Y is 400 mm and between Y and D is 200 mm. If the balancing masses revolve a t a radius of 100 mm, find their magnitudes and angular positions. Q.3. Four masses A, B, C and D as shown below are to be completely balanced The planes containing masses B and C are 300 mm apart. The angle between planes containing B and C is 90. B and C make angles of 210 and 120 respectively with D in the same sense. Find: 1. The magnitude and the angular position of mass A; and 2. The position of planes A and D. Q.4. The masses are 12 kg, 10 kg, 18 kg and 15 kg respectively and their radii of rotatio ns are 40 mm, 50 mm, 60 mm and 30 mm. The angular position of the masses B, C and D are 60, 135 and 270 from the mass A. Find the magnitude and position of the balancing mass at a r adius of 100 mm. 6. A rotating shaft carries three unbalanced masses of 4kg, 3kg and 2.5kg at rad ial distance of 75mm, 85mm and 50mm and at angular position of 450, 1350 and 2400 respectively. The second and third masses are in plane at 200mm and 375mm from the plane of first mass. The

angular position are measured counter clockwise from the reference line along xaxis and viewing the shaft from first mass end. The shaft length is 800mm between the bea ring and the distance between the plane of the first mass and bearing at that end is 225mm. D etermine the amount of counter masses in a plane at 75mm from the bearing for complete balanc ing of shaft. The first counter mass is to be in a plane between the first mass and bea ring and the second mass in a plane between the third mass and the bearing at that end. 7. Four masses A,B,C and D carries by a rotating shaft at radii 80mm,100mm,160mm and 120mm respectively are completely balanced. Masses B, C and D are 8kg, 4kg and 3 kg respectively. Determine the mass A and the relative angular position of the four masses if the planes are spaced 500mm apart. 8. A shaft is supported in bearings 1.8 m apart and projects 0.45 m beyond beari ngs at each end. The shaft carries three pulleys one at each end and one at the middle of it s length. The mass of end pulleys is 48 kg and 20 kg and their centre of gravity are 15 mm and 12.5 mm respectively from the shaft axis. The centre pulley has a mass of 56 kg and its centre of gravity is 15 mm from the shaft axis. If the pulleys are arranged so as to give static balance, determine: 1. Relative angular positions of the pulleys. 2. Dynamic forces produced on the bearings when the shaft rotates at 300 r.p.m. UNIT-3: GOVERNOR 1. The arms of a Porter governor are each 250 mm long and pivoted on the governo r axis. The mass of each ball is 5 kg and the mass of the central sleeve is 30 kg. The r adius of rotation of the balls is 150 mm when the sleeve begins to rise and reaches a val ue of 200 mm for maximum speed. Determine the speed range of the governor. If the friction at the sleeve is equivalent of 20 N of load at the sleeve, determine how the speed range is modif ied. 2. A Porter governor has all four arms 250 mm long. The upper arms are attached on the axis of rotation and the lower arms are attached to the sleeve at a distance of 30 mm from the axis. The mass of each ball is 5 kg and the sleeve has a mass of 50 kg. The extreme ra dii of rotation are 150 mm and 200 mm. Determine the range of speed of the governor. 3. The arms of a Porter governor are 300 mm long. The upper arms are pivoted on the axis of rotation. The lower arms are attached to a sleeve at a distance of 40 mm from th e axis of rotation. The mass of the load on the sleeve is 70 kg and the mass of each ball is 10 kg. Determine the equilibrium speed when the radius of rotation of the balls is 200 mm. If the friction is equivalent to a load of 20 N at the sleeve, what will be the range o f speed for this position?

4. A Proell governor has equal arms of length 300 mm. The upper and lower ends o f the arms are pivoted on the axis of the governor. The extension arms of the lower links a re each 80 mm long and parallel to the axis when the radii of rotation of the balls are 150 mm and 200 mm. The mass of each ball is 10 kg and the mass of the central load is 100 kg. D etermine the range of speed of the governor. 5. The following particulars refer to a proell governor with open arms: Length of all arms = 200 mm; distance of pivot of arms from the axis of rotation = 40mm; length of extension of lower arms to which each ball is attached = 100mm; mass o f each ball = 6 kg and mass of the central load = 150 kg. If the radius of rotation of the b alls is 180 mm when the arms are inclined at an angle of 40 to the axis of rotation, find the eq uilibrium speed for the above configuration.
