Why we give aid


To help people overcome poverty To promote stability and prosperity East Asia and the Pacific are the primary focus improving transport connectivity enables rapid, sustainable and inclusive growth. Economic integration with global and regional economies underpins sustainable development and allows countries to take better advantage of global growth. Better transport links can have a significant impact on poverty, creating jobs, making it easier for rural communities to get their goods to market and benefit from the regions strong growth.

How much aid do we give for infrastructure?


$348.6 million in 2011-2012 Infrastructure spend is 7% of ODA

Aims to enable economic and social development by establishing a safe and reliable multi modal transport system in PNG 1520 yr long term, whole of sector support program Capacity building and asset management focus in 1st phase (to end in 2013) 2011/12 expenditure $65 million 2,000+ kms of national priority roads maintained annually Nav Aids and baggage screening improvements at major airports to meet minimum safety and security standards Assisting with implementation of the Small Craft Safety Act Has contributed towards peace building in Bougainville through community road maintenance contracts for income generation.

2011/12 expenditure $17m Now in 2nd year of a 4 year phase II program Supports policy development and/or investment project preparation and implementation support Air, sea, rail and urban transport sub-sectors Works with all four MOT subsector DGs as well as DGH and several city governments Up to $240m in grants for supporting physical investments will fund output/results-based programs Other sub-sectors such as WATSAN

EINRIP
AusAIDs only loan-funded transport program - $300m + $30m TA The Loan component is fully implemented by GOI using their own systems 2011/12 - loan $48.2m, grant $1.8m supports 20 major road projects across 9 provinces 395 km of national roads and some 1300m of fabricated steel bridge structures. Incorporates stronger governance measures onto a roads improvement project similar to WB or ADB project

Vanuatu Transport Sector Support Program (VTSSP)


15 year rural roads maintenance program Phase 1: 08/09 to 12/13 $26m over 164km $4m Climate Change Adaptation funding >100k work days; 14% of which was undertaken by women

Pacific Region Infrastructure Facility (PRIF)


A multi-donor infrastructure coordination and financing mechanism operating in the Pacific island countries Supports country and regional infrastructure programs across 5 sub-sectors: Transport (Roads, Air, Maritime), Energy, Telecoms, Waste Management, WASH Partnership between Australia, WB, ADB, EU and NZ Australia has contributed $127 million over 4 years (2008 -12)
