Introduction
This Quick-Reference Guide from Chevron's Coatings Manual has been designed to give you easy access to the selection process for certain types of coating projects: Atmospheric (both on- and offshore) Concrete (mild environment only) Internal vessel Under insulation and fireproofing
By following the coating selection process, you will find a system data sheet which details the specifications and approved manufacturers for the coatings that fit your project. (See sample system data sheet below.) The design of the data sheet simplifies your preparation of a selection-and-specification package for a coating contractor: just photocopy the appropriate data sheet(s) and specification(s).

PRIMER
Self-Cured Inorganic Zinc - Solvent Reducible 2.0 - 3.0 mils DFT
Keep inorganic zinc silicate mixed, using agitated pot while applying.
TOPCOAT
Silicone - High Temp Rated to 700F 1.5 - 2.5 mils DFT
Non-catalyzed silicones remain tacky until exposed to heat above 300F to 400F. * Thumalox 230C topcoat will go over ONLY Thurmaloc 245C Silicone Zinc Dust Primer.
Note The system data sheets outnumber the references to coating systems in the selection criteria because Chevron has many coating systems in use. Do not choose a coating system unless you have been directed to do so by following either: The selection guide in this publication. Instructions from one of the Company's coating specialists or a coating manufacturer.
Also included in this Guide, the Coatings Compatibility Chart is a resource for projects involving maintenance coatings. For questions about the Guide, contact the CRTC specialists listed on the Contacts page.

Normally, we do not paint galvanized, aluminum, and stainless steel surfaces. If Chevron specifies or approves in writing the painting of such surfaces, then prepare the surface first with one coat of vinyl butyral wash primer before topcoating with the specified system. Topcoat the wash-primed surface within 24 hours with the system specified for the adjacent steel. Do not include the inorganic zinc primer when topcoating with Coating Systems 3.1 and 3.3. Do not exceed the manufacturer's recommended pot life for the vinyl butyral wash primer.

Respirators are strongly recommended when applying polyurethane. Vendors of mechanical equipment normally have their own standard coatings and find it economically impractical to change to purchaserspecified systems such as this one. Chevron's specified system must be applied unless the vendor obtains written approval from Chevron to substitute another. The alternative is to accept the vendor's standard primer and then apply Coating System 3.7 (Manufacturer's Standard/Universal Primer/Polyamide Epoxy (High Build)/Aliphatic Polyurethane).
VOC at or below 340 g/l is the anticipated regulatory limit. Check local standards for current VOC limits. Consult manufacturer's product data sheets for specific details about applying any coating. Last Update: 1/8/2004 QRG - 37 May 1998

Clad the specified portion of the splash zone with cold rolled, plain, unpolished, Monel sheathing per ASTM B-127. Weld the Monel sheathing continuously on all edges. Overlap all joints in the Monel sheathing by four inches. Require contractor to submit to Chevron for approval the shop drawings showing application details for Monel. Ensure full corrosion protection to the portion of the structure covered by Monel by requiring water-tight welds fasten Monel sheathing to steel members and Monel to Monel. Inspect all such welds with liquid-penetrant testing. Repair all defects exceeding those allowed in AWS D1.1 par. 9.25. Weld Monel to steel and Monel to Monel with only GMAW or GTAW processes using Monel filler metal conforming to AWS 5.14 class ERNi Cu-7. Qualify all weld procedures and welders working with Monel according to AWS D1.1 as for a fillet weld using a macroetch cross-section test. Recognize that Monel can tear if posed to mechanical damage. Heavier gage of Monel can provide some additional tear resistance, but not a substantial difference. Consider cost and handling before selecting heavier-gage Monel. *This is not DFT, this is Minimum Thickness.

FIREPROOFING
Chevron specifies fireproofing type and thickness. See Chevron's Fire Protection Manual. Certain manufacturers require a tiecoat between the fireproofing and weathercoating. Before sandblasting, weld 12-gage steel studs to the steel to support the mesh reinforcement. Alternative reinforcing techniques may be acceptable; but they require prior written authorization from Chevron. Allow fireproofing to cure ten days at 70F before applying weathercoat; lower temps require a longer cure. Apply weathercoat in two coats with the first thinned to penetrate, unless the manufacturer recommends a tiecoat instead.

Apply 10-mil-thick wax coat (resin mixed with wax) as a topcoat. See manufacturers' data sheets for resin-to-wax ratio. If seam sealant or putty is required, use any of the following brands from the Acceptable Brands List: (Vinyl Ester, Rivet and Seam Sealer (Trowel), Polysulfide Flexible Putty). This list is limited to full-service national manufacturers. Local conditions may warrant adding local suppliers. Sigma Novoguard 7453 is a 2 coat system.
VOC at or below 340 g/l is the anticipated regulatory limit. Check local standards for current VOC limits. Consult manufacturer's product data sheets for specific details about applying any coating. Last Update: 4/9/2003 QRG - 75 May 1998
