The story of C Objective of this book During my masters course, as part of the training of lectureship, I got a chance to teach

the 1st semester students of L. D. College of Engineering. During this time, I found that most of the time, students find it difficult to understand the subject. As per my opinion, it may be due to the prevalent bias that this subject is of interest only to the students of Computer Science/ Information Technology and Electronics Engineering students as this provides a programming basis for further studies in their course. However, I see this course as a vital element to build logic for any engineering discipline. Therefore, in this book, the first part of the book covers the objective of learning C for the engineering students. Ive also tried to understand the psychology of students towards their studies. In which, Ive seen that many of the students who seem to be good by secondary education, starts declining in their studies as they graduate to higher secondary education. This decline seems to continue further when they graduate to college education. I tried to find the answers. The reasons are many. But, if we just keep focus on the educational reasons, I could see that the Lack of interest and Lack of direction seems to be the main reasons. According to me, the reason for the Lack of interest is due to the lack of awareness of the applicability of this subject in their respect fields. Therefore, Ive included a chapter on Significance of programming in the engineering disciple. In the next chapter, Ive also included several application areas of the C language in each engineering discipline. Due to this, students may be able to find the motive to learn this subject. The second more important issue with learning in engineering students is that they have Lack of direction while learning. In this regard, it reminds me a quotation by Prof. Dr. T. P. Singh Know how to learn which he used to tell frequently during his lectures in Nirma Institute of Technology where I was studying. This small statement is the secret to become a scholar in any field. According to me, in this age of Internet and information era, the role of books and the teachers should be to: 1. Communicate the objective of the study of a particular subject. 2. Directing them on how to learn. 3. Teaching the subject. The first action will help to create interest for the subject. Once the interest is created, the students will have clear objective to learn it. Once they have the clear objective of learning the subject, the next step would be, to direct them on how they should go ahead learning it. Every subject and every book has its own way of learning. Once this basis for learning and organization is communicated well to the students, the remaining task of learning will be more logical and more interesting.
