The fundamental aim of the International Conference Safety and energy efficiency in river transportation for a sustainable development of the Peruvian Amazon Region is to contribute to the sustainable development of the emerging areas of the Peruvian Amazon. The Conference focus is on all the crucial aspects of river transportation of people, goods and services, taking into account the fundamental role played by river transportation in the economic and social development of the Amazon region and considering the peculiarities of this sector. The Conference is held within the IDS (Ingenieria por un Desarollo Sostenible) concept, and aims to create a framework where technicians and researchers may participate to promote an environmentally sustainable improvement for the life of people in the Andean Region. The Conference is an opportunity for designers, research organizations, academic institutions, shipbuilders, owners, classification societies, etc. to actively contribute to the improvement of river transportation and exploitation systems, with the final goal of making river transportation a safe efficient, environmentally friendly and profitable sector for local people. Submitted abstracts should have a length of approximately 200-400 words and are expected to clearly indicate the contents and contribution of the paper. The abstract should also report the details of the reference author. Abstracts shall be sent to the Conference Secretariat (info@ids2013.pe) and in copy to the Conference Chairmen. Submitted abstracts will be reviewed by the Scientific Committee. Authors of accepted abstract will be requested to submit the full paper. All the manuscript will be peer-reviewed, and the final acceptance and publication in the Conference proceedings will be based on the review of the full paper.

VENUE The Conference will take place in Iquitos, the jungle capital of the Loreto Region, the largest city in the northern Peruvian Amazon and the main port city on the Amazon River. Iquitos is a peculiar city: it is, indeed, the world's largest city which cannot be reached by roads. But you can choose alternative paths: arriving in Iquitos from the Andean region after three days of river navigation, or simply after a 1-hour flight from Lima. The northern Peruvian Amazon basin is characterized by the presence of long and powerful rivers, eventually flowing into the large Amazon River. With its 6000 km of rivers, the inland navigation network in the Iquitos' region represents a fantastic scenery and a great resource. Indeed, more than 90% of goods and passengers transport in the region is based on the waterway network, and this makes river transportation an essential part of the everyday life of people in the region. The freight traffic in the north-south direction develops along the Ucayali River, while east-west traffic exploits the Maran River. Inland navigation is significantly influenced by draught limitations, but, in this region, vessels with draught up to about 1.2 m can navigate the network all the year round. Iquitos extends at the junction of two rivers: the Nanay River and the Amazonian River. This cosmopolitan city was originally founded as a Jesuit mission in the 1750s.

Conference Proceedings will be assigned an ISBN number. The official languages of the conference are English and Spanish, so full papers are accepted in any of the two languages, provided they contain a summary (abstract) in both languages. Full papers will be written in accordance with the template format which will be provided to authors with the second announcement.

The initial slow growing of the original small settlement was boosted the first time in the 1880s by the rubber boom and then, a second time, in the 1960s, by the oil resources. Today Iquitos is a modern and prosperous town, where tourism is also playing an important social and economic role. The Conference venue is in the centre of the city. A preliminary programme and information about hotel reservations, recommended transportation, registration as well as an accompanying persons programme will be given later by the Second Conference Announcement.
