Current Event Requirements


Oral Presentation In preparation for your oral presentation you should refer back to the handout Characteristics of a Good Speaker. The oral presentation will be assessed in the following areas: 1. Did you speak for at least 3 minutes 2. Did you have an objective summary 3. Did you have a subjective response (your opinion on the article) 4. Were you prepared to present (note cards, explained the article clearly, could you answer questions) 5. Speaker skills did you speak loudly, make eye contact, appropriate body movement

Current Event Write-Up The written portion for current events will be assessed in the following areas: 1. Is your packet in the right order (graphic organizer on top, followed by the summary response, followed by the original article or photocopy of the original article attached to a 8 by 11 sheet of paper. This packet should be neat and will be placed in your binder when it is returned to you. Summary response should be in blue or black ink.

2. Objective topic sentence. Does your topic sentence address the key point of your article?

3. Objective paragraph. Was your paragraph five sentences? Did your paragraph address the main points of the article? 4. Subjective topic sentence. Did your topic sentence state your opinion about the current event? Dont use I think or In my opinion 5. Subjective paragraph. Was your paragraph five sentences. Did your paragraph support your topic sentence? Did you use article details to support your opinion. If you use additional materials (research, illustration, other) you need to make the connection of these materials to either your oral presentation or written response. You need to cite your sources for additional research. If you choose not to use the summary response document to write your paragraphs then type your summary response on a separate sheet of paper. Use the following guidelines when typing up your summary paragraphs on a separate sheet: 1. Heading with your name, date, class color skip two lines after this 2. Title of the article in quotation marks 3. Title of the publication (newspaper) underlined or website 4. The date of the publication 5. The authors name 6. #2-5 should be centered under the proper heading. Skip 2 lines after this 7. Objective paragraph summarizing the article (labeled, about 5 sentences) 8. Subjective paragraph with your opinion clearly stated and supporting details from the article to support your opinion (labeled, about 5 sentences)
