Many people wonder why accessibility is so important to the Village of Fleischmanns Park Committee, especially as it relates to the playground. The main reason is the Americans with Disabilities Act which is a wide ranging law that protects people with disabilities from discrimination, similar to the Civil Rights Act of 1964. It was enacted by Congress and signed by President George H. W. Bush in 1990. The ADA applies to any new construction or renovation of a public building, facility or recreation area, providing equal access such as ramps, doors and bathrooms that are wide enough and curb cuts on sidewalks, just to name a few of its parameters. Raising awareness is key in creating more inclusive communities. Often it takes a member of ones own family facing the challenges of living with a disability to open ones eyes to the need for accessibility and inclusion. If you are someone living with paralysis, even leaving the house becomes an exercise in planning. Is the store, office or municipal building you plan on visiting handicap accessible? Is the pavement riddled with cracks and holes? Will you find yourself after wheeling down a long stretch of pavement forced to turn around because you cannot get down to the street because there is no curb cut? How many buildings will you have to visit before finding a bathroom that is accessible? It is understandable that the general population does not ordinarily think about these issues, but for some people it shapes the scope and breadth of their life experiences. This is what the ADA was written for, to enable all Americans the same opportunities for a rich and fulfilling life, and it is the responsibility of elected officials, paid town and county representatives and community activists to not only do the bare minimum to comply with the law, but to support the spirit of the law.

This past month 140 fundraising appeal letters were sent with 24 respondees to date and contributions ranging from $25 to $2500. We are hoping that many more contributions from individuals and local businesses such as restaurants and real estate agencies will be received before years end. Three tennis court contractors have been contacted and one bid has been submitted. It is for a top of the line/ state of the art classic turf four court complex. Unfortunately this dream surface (beautiful to behold and extremely forgiving on body parts such as knees) comes with a hefty price tag commensurate with its superior features. If I could sing I would do a reprieve of Eartha Kitts Santa Baby refrain. If there is a generous Santa or reasonable facsimile out there somewhere, please dont wait till Christmas. Our Fleischmanns/Latin DJ mentioned our worthy cause and need for money on the Roxburys WIOX this past Friday night and will continue to do so in the upcoming weeks. Thank you Poppy Chulo AKA Hank Schlittner. The girls from the playground and tennis committees working together for the restoration of key facilities in the park will be offering a limited edition T-shirt for which Margaretville artist Nick Verni has refashioned a logo specifically for the parks centennial. The shirts in unisex S, M, L and XL are 100% cotton and will be available in time for holiday gift giving. Reserve orders are being accepted now. Several years ago, Halcottsville artist Alix Travis was on location at the village park with the Plein Air painting group. Inspired by the dynamic action she serendipitously witnessed on the courts she created a vibrant painting titled, tennis whites, no. 1. Alix has generously donated this matted and framed 8.5 x 13.25 transparent watercolor signed by the artist to the tennis court escrow fund as an auction item. For a private viewing or to leave a bid, please contact Sindy at 845-254-9955. Happy Thanksgiving from the tennis community.

Are you at a loss as to what to get your hard-tobuy-for relative for the holidays? Want to gift a loving tribute to a family member? How about purchasing a piece of the playground? We will be listing multiple playground components for sponsorship, the amounts will be a ballpark figure as we do not know what company will be winning the bid to build the playground. For example, you may wish to sponsor a twisty slide which one company may list for $1,200 and another may list it for $960, so regardless of what the final # is, you will be credited with sponsoring that slide with your donation of $1,000. We will be listing the gift/tribute recipients in the following months Park News, so if you would like your gift to be announced for the holidays, you have until December 10th to make the December Park News issue.

CHICKEN BBQ, BAKE SALE AND BLUEGRASS

A good time was had by all at the playground fundraiser at the Community Church. Our volunteer BBQ crew started at noon to cook the 150 chicken halves, braving the cold for a great cause. The bake sale donations started rolling in shortly after and boy were there some fantastic creations! Milk chocolate bark with toasted almonds and raisins, a gluten free pumpkin cheesecake, apple crisp, and a wonderful variety of pumpkin pies, breads and cookies just to name a few. The catered donations arrived then, with Sassy Sisters Custom Confections delivering their amazing strawberry mousse filled 1/2 chocolate, 1/2 vanilla sheet cake with The Fleischmanns Playground Projects new banner logo on the top! You have to see the photo of this on the Facebook page. Ateoate Catering delighted us with some out of this world potato salad and cole slaw. Catskill Flower Shop donated two beautiful floral arrangements which were sold, and young and old enjoyed the music.of the Catskill Mountain Boys later in the evening. The bake sale items were so many that we only sold half by the nights end, so with the blessing of Father Paul Catena of Sacred Heart Parish we sold the rest of the baked goods in the ten minutes after Sunday mornings service! All in all we raised $1,150 and we want to thank you one and all for making this event such a wonderful success!
