If the sculptures dotting the Evergreen landscape appear a bit cleaner and more robust you can thank a local group of well-intentioned kids. Forty-three sixth graders from the Rocky Mountain Academy of Evergreen lent a helping hand and a little elbow grease April 22 as they participated in a spring cleaning of ten Art for the Mountain Community sculptures sprinkled throughout Evergreen. As part of a community service project, the students assembled into small groups at school and were dispatched with a parent escort to tackled the winter grime that accumulated on the various art pieces reaching from north Evergreen to main street and the Lakehouse. After a thorough scrubbing, drying and application of a coat of wax the cleaning crew of students assembled downtown for a tour of the sculptures residing in the business district. They were treated to a picnic lunch at the Lakehouse grounds before their return to their sculptures for a final coat of wax and a good hearty buffing. AMC current and past board members including Sam Smith,Anne Vickstrom,Karen Lindsay, Marcia O'Keefe,Phil and Barb Stanley along with local sculptors Laura Mehmert,Tom Ware and Harold Linke participated in the project, which incidently coincided with Earth Day. AMC president Lindsay, education committee director O'Keefe and RMAE parents Cyndi Makowski and Martha Biassi were instrumental in planning and executing the first annual student cleanup.
