CMS is again partnering with the State Health Plan and Blue Cross Blue Shield to provide on-site flu shot clinics to CMS employees, retirees and their family members. These flu shots are free to State Health Plan participants or BCBSNC participants. Have an academic question? Who is CARL? CARL is the CMS Academic Resource Library. Here you will find a plethora of PD opportunities, resource links and videos on numerous topics related to teaching and learning, such as classroom management, differentiation, professional collaboration, technology integration, EC and ELL. Why should I Ask CARL? You should Ask CARL because CARL has lots of answers in one organized place. Theres no need to spend hours searching when CARL has done the work for you. How do I log in to watch CARLs videos? One of the features in Ask CARL is a digital library of instructional videos from PD In Focus. To view the PD In Focus videos linked to each CARL topic, log in to PD In Focus once. Your username is your CMS email address. Your password is changeme. Measures of Student Learning webinar You can learn more about the state's new Measures of Student Learning. Chief Accountability Officer Frank Barnes will inform CMS staff about the new MSLs and how they will impact our classrooms at a webinar. The webinar is scheduled for 5:30 to 6:15 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 27. After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the Webinar. Fall 2012 Talent Pool application periods The Assistant Principal/Principal Talent Pool process is used to identify potential school leaders and build a reserve of competitive talent. It's imperative that CMS maintain the depth and quality of this reserve. With this in mind, we have made some adjustments to the process including waiving the one year wait time requirement before candidates may reapply to the pool. As such, all interested parties are invited to apply/reapply to the Assistant Principal/Principal Talent Pool. There are two steps to the talent pool process. National Board certification National Board certification provides both a learning experience and a leadership opportunity. Make the move toward this exciting leadership opportunity. Not ready to take on the full process just yet? Consider Take One! Remember, a prudent leader knows how to focus and motivate themselves as they motivate others. Get motivated to learn and lead by registering for a study group and beginning the national board process. The next study group for NB candidates and Take One! participants is from 9:30 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Oct. 13, at the PDC. Check out the National Board wiki to learn more. You can always contact the National Board office for more information. Learn about Moodle Fall is a great time to stretch and learn some new skills. Are you interested in Moodle, an online course management system that delivers content, collaboration, and assessment? Introduction to Online Instruction Using Moodle is a four-week course in MyPD which explores strategies to create an online learning community and standards in course development. This course begins on Monday, Oct. 15.

Action research/independent study course Do you have questions about how to meet your students needs? Are you searching for a new classroom management or instructional strategy to add to your repertoire? If so, conduct a mini action research project through our 8-week online independent study course beginning Oct. 1. Support is provided throughout the course. This course was designed for second or third-year teachers but educators with any amount of experience are welcome. Register now on MyPD by searching for Independent Study. Have questions about diversity? Enroll in our self-paced online course, Overview of Diversity Topics. Course topics include stereotypes and biases, culturally-responsive teaching, socioeconomic considerations, and cognitive considerations. Participants will explore the content online and examine implications for their classrooms. Read some of the feedback from prior course participants. Enroll now on MyPD.

Charlotte offers Citizen Web Portal Local government staff is being given advance access to the Citizen Web Portal, a new service that allowing utility bill customers to manage their accounts and other City services electronically. The City of Charlotte is phasing the rollout of the service for quality control purposes before its release to the public. They need the assistance of employees, who are also utility bill customers to test the service and provide feedback. If you would like to participate here are some general instructions to gain access to the system:

Remember: Competitive grant proposals of more than $15,000 require CMS Board of Education approval. The CMS Grants Team will create a grant timeline to review/edit the grant and assist the school with obtaining all the required executive staff signatures. VFW: National Citizenship Education Teachers' Award The VFW's National Citizenship Education Teachers' Award recognizes the nation's top elementary, junior high and high school teachers who teach citizenship education topics regularly and promote America's history and traditions. Maximum award: $1,000. Eligibility: teachers K-12. Deadline: Nov. 1. AGI: A World of Change in My Community The American Geological Institute is sponsoring a photography contest to celebrate Earth Science Week 2012. The photography theme for this year is "Earth Science is a Big Job." Maximum award: $300, a copy of AGI's Faces of Earth DVD, and winner's photograph on the Earth Science Week Website. Eligibility: interested residents of the United States of any age. Deadline: Oct. 19. U.S. Government: Fulbright Classroom Teacher Exchange Program The Fulbright Classroom Teacher Exchange Program provides opportunities for teachers to participate in direct exchanges of positions with colleagues from other countries for a semester or academic year. By living and working in the cultures of their host countries, Fulbright teachers gain an understanding and appreciation of the similarities and differences in national cultures and education systems. Maximum award: year-long or semester-long direct exchange of teaching positions with a counterpart in another country teaching the same subject at the same level. Eligibility: full-time U.S. teachers. Deadline: Oct. 15. NSTA: Awards for Excellence in Inquiry-based Science Teaching The Delta Education/Frey-Neo/CPO Science Awards for Excellence in Inquirybased Science Teaching will recognize and honor three full-time Pre-K-12 teachers of science who successfully use inquiry-based science to enhance teaching and learning in their classroom. Maximum award: $1,500 towards expenses to attend the NSTA National Conference, and $1,500 for the awardee. Eligibility: Pre-K-12 teachers of science. Deadline: Nov. 30.
