Submitted by: William Muncrief
Little Hunters, Big Bucks
Editors Note: We enjoy hearing from our outdoor heroes who share with us
their adventures and accomplishments so that we can share them with you too.
My daughter killed a huge 10 point youth weekend and a lot of people have suggested I send
pictures and the story to the Lakecaster. Her name is Susan Muncrief and she is a student at West
Sabine Elementary in Pineland. She was diagnosed with HLH, a rare disease similar to Leukemia in
2006 and underwent a bone marrow transplant in 2007. She has made a remarkable full recovery and
now enjoys playing softball, gymnastics and deer hunting!
Her brother Hunter is quite jealous of her deer but he has had great success in the outdoors as well.
At the age of 7 he caught a 9 pound bass in the McDonalds Tournament and helped win Dr. Sheltons
tournament later that year. He also was the biggest part of the team that back to back won the Adult/
Boy division of the Texas State Bass Tournament. He holds or has held several junior angler records on
Sam Rayburn and has made the Lakecaster many times with his angling accomplishments.
This year at age 12 Hunter killed his largest buck ever with a crossbow on the 2nd weekend of bow
season. It was a very old, very heavy 8 point with 6 inch bases. I have attached a picture of the buck.
2012 marked the 3rd year Susan would be deer hunting. On the youth opener each of the last two
years in Tyler County she was able to kill a nice 8 point. Saturday morning we sat in our ladder stand
and saw a nice buck but couldnt get a shot on him as he moved quickly across a pin oak fat. That
afternoon we went to a stand overlooking a large area we had intended to plant oats in but hadnt got
around to it. We had settled in and at about 4:30 I saw a huge buck enter the opening from the left at
a steady walk. I showed Susan the deer and she moved into position as the deer maintained his steady
pace. When he was directly in front of us at about 60 yards I whistled once to try to get him to stop. He
never acknowledged anything and I whistled again even louder. He still maintained a steady walk. I
whistled a third time and he stopped and looked our direction. I asked Susan if she had a shot and she
said yes and pushed the safety off. She fred her 22-250 and the buck kicked high in the air and took
off to the other end of the clearing. We could see him run out of sight at least 300 yards away.
We waited about 10 minutes then climbed out of the stand and started searching for blood. After
a short search with no results we went to get her brother and mother off another stand. The four of
us spread out to increase the odds of fnding blood. Hunter spotted blood up a trail about 50 yards
from where we had seen the buck exit the clearing. We trailed the buck for about an hour fnding very
small specks of blood. When the blood trail reached a road it was getting late and we decided to call of
the search for the afternoon. It would be cold that night and we decided it would be best to come back
in the morning.
The next morning we returned and found the buck about 75 yards from the last place we found
blood. He had been shot far back and expired sometime during the night. We were very surprised at
the size of the deer and the huge horns.
I had the deer scored on the following Monday morning and he scored 150 1/8 gross and 147 5/8 net.
We are going to enter the buck in the Texas Big Game Awards. I have attached the best pictures of the deer.
Thank you for reading her story. They are both good students who share a love for the outdoors!

Albert Collins Wins
Big at Sam Rayburn
By Jim Binns
The 2013 Bassmaster Classic will be held on Oklahomas Grand
Lake of the Cherokees February 22nd-24th and will feature 53
of the fnest anglers in the nation. Among them will be Albert
Collins from Nacogdoches, Texas, recent winner of the 2012
Toyota Tundra Bassmaster Weekend Series, operated by American
Bass Anglers, that was held on Sam Rayburn Reservoir, November
7th 10th. WOW! What an accomplishment. Here is what took
place.
Day One Day One Day One - Early weather was slightly overcast but brisk winds
made boat runs from the Umphrey Pavilion to distant locations
on the 114,500 acre lake rough and wet. The best anglers from 25
states tested these waters, but on Day 1 local angler Todd Driscoll
had the right pattern working in the Boaters Division. Driscoll
jumped into an early lead with a fve bass limit that tipped the
scales to the 23-pounds 14-ounces mark. The bag also included a
kicker bass weighing 7.65 pounds. Driscoll is a very knowledgeable
angler that works for the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department in
Jasper, Texas, and it was no surprise that he was leading the event
after the frst day since he has fshed this body of water for more
that 14 years.
Pre-fshing was tough for most anglers since the bass were
roaming and feeding on shad. Driscoll had three places that
consisted of drops in 15 to 35 feet of water where he found
feeding fsh and had his limit by 9am. Driscoll used his Lowrance
Structure Scan electronics to fnd key humps and ridges to locate
the fsh. Prime baits for these open water main-lake areas were big
worms, crankbaits and a 5-inch futter spoon.
Second place went to Clifford Albert Collins who brought in
a fne limit weighing 19.96 pounds. David Curtis of Trinity, Texas,
took third place with fve bass weighing 19.01 pounds, followed by
Nick J. Prvonozac of Warren, Ohio, with fve bass at 18.63 pounds.
John Hutchins of Warrenton, Va., took ffth place with fve bass for
18.14 pounds which included a 7.08-pounder. Brian R. Brown of
Kuttawa, Ky., took sixth place with fve bass weighing 17.79, but
brought in the biggest bass of Day 1, a 10.51-pound hog.
The Co-Angler Division saw Brian Modisette of Broaddus, Texas
take the early lead with a three bass limit weighing 12.69 pounds, take the early lead with a three bass limit weighing 12.69 pounds,
and it included a 6.58 pound kicker. Most of these fsh were
taken from humps and main-lake points using a Carolina-rig.
Richard Michalski of West Point, Ky. took second place with a
solid limit that weighed 10.85 pounds followed by Robin Phillips
of Smithville, Tenn. with 10.31 pounds. Collinsville, Okla. angler
Derek Thurman took fourth with 9.86 pounds and Travis Malphrus
of Ridgeland, S.C. took ffth place with 9.67 pounds which included
the co-angler division lunker honors at 7.24 pounds.
Day Day Day Two Day Day - Partly cloudy skies with winds predicted to be
from the SSE at 5 to 15 mph was the weather forecast for the
day. I think the prediction was a bit on the light side because the
Lines were long as spectators watched anglers arrive by boat.

lake was certainly rough. After two days of intense pressure and
grueling competition, Albert Collins put the pedal to the metal in
this prestigious event and brought in a huge bag of bass weighing
24.53 pounds to take the lead. Collins two day total was 10 keepers
weighing 44.49 pounds, and one of those bass was a 6.20-pound
kicker. Collins stated that he caught most of his bass in less than
two hours on Texas-rigged worms and big crankbaits. However,
his biggest problem was not the fsh, it was his boat. After a rough
and demanding long distance run and fghting the Sam Rayburn
waves, Collins blew his motor but managed to limp back into the
weigh-in site. He stated that he had borrowed a boat and would be
ready for day three.
David Curtis of Trinity, Texas, moved up to second place by
landing two consecutive fve-bass daily limits for a two-day total of
39.14 pounds. Local angler Stephen Johnston of Hemphill, Texas,
weighed in a solid 18.88 pounds of bass for a two-day total of 10
bass weighing 36.07 pounds. Fourth place was held by Jeffery Wade
of Cabot, Ark., with two consecutive daily limits for 32.36 pounds.
Rounding out the top fve was Nick J. Prvonozac of Warren, Ohio,
with a two day total of 10 bass for 32.34 pounds. Day 1 leader, Todd
Driscoll of Jasper fell to sixth place with a two-day effort of 31.47
pounds.
In the Co-Angler Division, Brian K. Modisette of Broaddus,
Texas, held onto a slim lead with a two-day total of fve bass going
16.68 pounds. Most of his bass were caught early off main-lake
points. Like a few of the other anglers, Modisette also suffered some
mechanical troubles that cut into his fshing time.
Richard Michalski of West Port, Ky., stayed in second place
among the co-anglers with a two-day total of fve bass weighing
16.15 pounds. Charlie A. Davis of Hope Hull, Ala. jumped from
sixth place to third with two consecutive three-bass daily limits
for 15.78 pounds and Cody Burke of Greenbrier, Ark., weighed in
a total of 14.96 pounds. Robin K. Phillips of Smithville, Tenn.,
dropped from third to ffth among the co-anglers with 14.90
pounds after catching weights of 10.31 and 4.59 pounds.
Day Three - Day Three - Day Three - Tournament weather consisted of bluebird skies,
temperatures that reached 80+-degrees and lots of wind. I saw
many sunburned (or wind burned) faces as the anxious anglers
reached the weigh-in area. Its hard however to gripe about the
Texas weather when you are able to fsh in a T-shirt and shorts
while many parts of the United States are buried in snow.
Albert Collins brought another solid bag of bass to the scales
and held onto the top spot of the tournament. The 48-year-old
angler caught 11 keepers on Day 3 and his top fve weighed 19.70
pounds. This increased Collins lead to more than 10 pounds.
During the three days of competition Collins weighed in 15 bass
weighing 64.19 pounds
The fshing was tough today, Collins commented. I didnt
get my limit until after 11am and was getting pretty anxious.
Most of my fsh were taken on a large crankbait, E2 lizards and
Texas-rigged worms. I used plum apple and redbug colors for the
plastics and fshed the crankbait pretty slow.
Second place was held by David Curtis of Trinity, Texas, who
landed his third consecutive fve bass daily limit for 14.98 pounds.
In three days, Curtis brought in 15 bass for 54.12 pounds. Stephen
Johnston of Hemphill, Texas, stayed in third place with a three-
day total of 15 bass weighing 50.70 pounds. On Day 3, Johnson
brought in 14.63 pounds with a 6.21-pound kicker. Fourth place
angler Jeffry Wade of Cabot, Ark., landed his third consecutive
fve-bass daily limit for a total of 45.91 pounds. John Hutchins of
Warrenton, Va., moved up from eighth place to ffth place with a
14.26-pound bag. After three days, he weighed 15 bass at 43.58
pounds topped by a 7.08-pound kicker. Brian R. Brown of Kuttawa,
Ky., continued to lead the tournament Big Bass honors with a
10.51-pounder he landed on Day 1.
In the Co-Angler Division, Richard Michalski of West Port, Ky.,
who had never fshed the lake before, moved into the lead with a
6.47-pound bag, making his three day total 22.62 pounds. On Day
1, Michalski brought in 10.85 pounds. He held second on Day 2
after catching 5.30 pounds with most of his fsh being taken on
crankbaits.
With the largest single-day catch from any co-angler, Sidney
Weaver of Cherryville, N.C., jumped from 74th place into second
with a bag of bass weighing 13.52-pounds. Joe Dorcy of Smithville,
Mo., also jumped from 12th place to third with a three-day total
of nine bass for 20.94 pounds. Michael M. Smith of Laurel Hill,
Fla., moved from 21st place into fourth with three consecutive
three-bass daily limits for 20.79 pounds and Derek J. Thurman of
Collinsville, Okla., held ffth with nine bass going 20.72 pounds.
Keith A. Vann of Cedartown, Ga., unseated Travis Malphrus of
Ridgeland, S.C. and his 7.24-pounder for the co-angler big bass
honors with an 8.18-pound lunker.
Day Four Day Four Day Four Except for the pesky wind, the weather had been
spectacular for the event with temperatures ranging in the low
80s. Partly cloudy skies set the stage for Day 4 and on this fnal
day of competition only the top 25 boaters and co-anglers would
compete. The pressure was intense.
Boaters Division - This tournament should have been billed
as the Albert Collins Show because after day one he never lost the
lead. Collins weighed in a whopping 22.37 pound bag of bass the
fnal day to earn a spot in the upcoming 2013 Bassmaster Classic.
And to make it even sweeter, Collins also took home a check as the
Boaters Champion for $100,000. WOW!
Collins fnished the tournament with a perfect four-day limit of
20 bass that weighed an amazing 86.56 pounds - for a 4.33-pound
average. On Day 1, Collins was in second place with 19.96 pounds,
and then weighed in 24.53 pounds on Day 2 to take the lead. On
Day 3, he landed 19.70 pounds to increase his lead and on the
fnal day he landed the third largest single-day bag of bass to win
it all. Truly amazing!
A very happy Collins stated, I caught most of my fsh in 8-to 14
feet of water. I was fshing ledges and channel drops but the key
was to fnd hard spots where the sand and clay came together. I did
fsh some points that fell off into 15-to 20 feet of water and I was
David Curtis ultimately won 2nd place in the Pro
Division and talked to the crowd about his week

mostly cranking a 6-inch Tennessee shad crankbait and throwing
an E2 worm.
Every fsherman dreams of a chance to fsh in the Bassmaster
Classic, stated the 48-year-old angler from Nacogdoches, Texas.
Its hard to believe that it will happen for me and you cannot
imagine how much I am looking forward to it.
David Curtis of Trinity, Texas fshed a fne tournament and took
2nd place with four consecutive fve-bass daily limits to fnish
with 71.05 pounds. Curtis was in third place on Day 1 with 19.01
pounds and then caught 20.13 pounds on Day 2. He followed
that with 14.98 pounds and then on the fnal day weighed 16.93
pounds.
Stephen Johnston of Hemphill, Texas fnished third with 19 bass
that weighed 68.53 pounds. On Day 1, he was in eighth place with
17.19 pounds and then followed that on Day 2 with 18.88 pounds.
On Day 3 he weighed in 14.63 pounds and then fnished with 17.83
pounds on the fnal day.
So when was the last time you caught a 10-pound bass,
especially when the chips were down and money was on the line?
Well Stephen Johnston brought a 10.20 pound giant in on the fnal
day of the tournament (second largest bass of the tournament),
and what a beautiful fsh it was. I cannot imagine the excitement
and anxiety experienced before that huge bass was brought safely
into the boat.
John Hutchins of Warrenton, Va., fnished fourth with 20 bass
that weighed 60.07 pounds which included a 7.08-pound kicker.
On Day 1 he brought in 18.14 pounds, followed with 11.18 pounds
on Day 2, and then moved up from eighth place to ffth with a
14.26-pound catch on Day 3. On the fnal day, Hutchins jumped
one place with a 16.49-pound bag.
Nick J. Prvonozac of Warren, Ohio, took ffth place with 20 bass
going 52.38 pounds. His daily bags of bass were 18.63 followed by
13.71, 10.06 and then 9.98 pounds on the fnal day.
Brian R. Brown of Kuttawa, Ky., won the Big Bass of the
tournament honors with a beautiful 10.51-pounder that he caught
on Day 1.
Co-Angler Division Co-Angler Division - Richard Michalski of West Port, Ky.,
won the co-angler championship with a four-day total of 11 bass
weighing 33.05 pounds. On Day 1, Michalski brought in 10.85
pounds, followed by 5.30 pounds, and then moved into the lead
on Day 3 by weighing 6.47 pounds. On the fnal day Michalski
weighed in 10.43 pounds. By the luck of the draw he was the
co-angler fshing on Day 3 and Day 4 with the winner of the event
- Albert Collins.
Michalski stated, I caught all my bass using deep-diving DD-22
crankbaits and big worms fshed right along the river ledge. It
was truly a pleasure to fsh two days with Albert and he was a
real gentleman. Once he got his limit he basically told me where
the fsh were and let me start culling. There is no way I would be
standing here on the stage accepting the winners check if it had
not been for him.
The drive back to Kentucky will be very pleasant for Michalski
since as co-angler champion he received a beautiful trophy and a
check for $50,000. Not bad for fshing a lake you have never been
on before.
Michael M. Smith of Laurel Hill, Fla., placed second with a
four-day limit of 12 bass weighing 29.61 pounds. It was a grind,
but in the four days he weighed 6.63 pounds, 5.86 pounds,
8.30-pounds and 8.82 pounds.
Sammy L. Strong of Orange, Texas, jumped from 14th place
to third with an 8.36-pound catch on Day 4. He also fnished
with four consecutive three-bass daily limits that weighed 26.52
pounds. His previous daily catch consisted of 5.10 pounds, 6.67
pounds and 6.39 pounds.
Derek J. Thurman of Collinsville, Okla., fnished fourth with
12 bass weighing 26.36 pounds. His catch for the four days of the
event was 9.86 pounds, 5.01 pounds, 5.85 pounds and 5.64 pounds.
Brandon R. Gaylor of Oliver Springs, Tenn., fnished in ffth
place with a four-day total of 11 keepers totaling 26.23 pounds.
Daily catches consisted of 6.01 pounds, 6.36 pounds, 7.52 pounds
and 6.34-pounds.
Keith A. Vann of Cedartown, Ga., caught the biggest bass in the
Co-Angler Division with an 8.18-pound lunker.
Kudos to Porter Trimble and his fne American Bass Anglers
staff for conducting such a well run and prestigious event. And
also a tip of the ol fshing cap to the city of Jasper, Jasper County
Development District #1, Rayburn Country, Triton and Jasper
Outboard for making everyone feel at home. How fortunate we
are to have quality lakes like Sam Rayburn and Toledo Bend to
accommodate events of this type and give visiting anglers such
wonderful memories.
Some of the comments I heard from the out of town
participants were
I will be back, What a great fshery, I love fshing in Texas,
We sure met a bunch of friendly folks, I sure wish I had the
chance to fsh this lake more often, and The wind sure blows a
lot out here doesnt it?
In Closing - So how in the world can you win one of these
prestigious tournaments? Well according to Albert Collins the key
is to fsh ledges, creek channels and hard spots where the clay and
sand meet. But just how do you fnd those key areas where the clay
meets the sand? Well thats the $100,000 question that eventually
Collins has fgured out. I can only imagine the excitement that
Collins will feel as he heads to the 2013 Bassmaster Classic to
match casts with the best of the best. Its a dream come true and
who knows Collins may fnd a magic spot during the event
where the clay meets the sand and win it all. Ill be there cheering
him on. Good Fishing - JB

By Gay Norton
The unusual sighting
No, it was not Big Foot thats another story of its own.
My husband, Mark, and I are very blessed to have a tract of
land that we lease close to our home. It is not just a deer lease.
It is a Family Lease. With it being just family & one close
friend, we dont have a lot of rules that we have to follow. We
do naturally follow the state laws and we pride ourselves in
managing our deer. During the last couple of years, we have
harvested some very nice quality bucks.
This deer season seemed like it was going to start off just like
any opening weekend but, it was a little unusual. Everyone was
pumped and ready to see that big buck step out and give us an
opportunity for a shot.
My son and daughter-in-law are known to tell us some stories
and pull pranks on us. They think it is hilarious when we fall for
some of their stories! My daughter-in-law texted me during the
morning hunt. She asked, What is the deal with the deer with
an orange collar? My son accused her of seeing a dog instead of
a deer. She was a little upset that he didnt believe her. Then she
sent me a picture of a deer with an orange collar and said heres
the proof. The deer had come back and she took a picture of it
with her phone.
Well, I didnt respond to any of her texting. Instead, I am
searching on my phone for any recent articles on the web and
looking for a picture of a deer with an orange collar that looked
like her picture. I didnt fnd anything.
After the hunt, I asked Mark about the text and did he believe
it? He said well yeah, I saw the thing myself!! He said it was the
weirdest thing he had ever seen. The next morning my son and
our friend saw him. They said it was as if all you could do was
concentrate on the collar when you saw him he was a young 4
point that was aggressively trying to fnd a girlfriend. He ended
up being seen by everyone but me.
We got to asking some of our friends and neighbors if they
had seen him. He had been seen on some adjoining leases and
crossing some roads. We didnt know if there was a special reason
for the collar or if it was someones pet deer. We contacted the
local game warden and he wasnt aware of any special situation.
So, we fgured it was someones pet and that they had decided to
put a collar on it so maybe no one would shoot it.
I can understand that if it was a pet, the reasoning behind the
collar, but I also know that you can not make a pet of a wild deer
and then let him out in the wild with a bright orange collar and
expect him not to be seen or shot. Also, as the deer grows or his
neck gets bigger due to rutting, the collar would probably end up

chocking him to death if he didnt get tangled
up in something and die that way. Either way, it
would not be a good situation.
One day Mark and our friend saw him while
driving our Ranger thru the lease he ran. So
he was defnitely scared of that noise. Then a
couple of days later while Mark was in his stand,
Little Bucky walked out. He ended up walking
right up to the stand. Mark decided that he was
going to try to talk to him and see if he would
respond. When he did this, the deer just looked
up at him and kept walking around. So, Mark
got down from the stand and was talking to him
he did not run. This is not natural!!!
Mark reached in his pocket and got out a
little package of Nerds (some Halloween candy
that we had left over). He shook the box and
it rattled, the deer turned around and started
coming to him. He poured the candy in his
hand and you would not believe it the deer
came and ate the Nerds out of his hand!! Well,
when he did this, Mark reached up and grabbed
his antlers with one hand. The deer pulled back
a little but he kept eating the Nerds. He stood
there while Mark petted him a while then he
started getting a little nervous. So, Mark made
the decision to undo the collar and take it off.
He hoped that this would end up saving him
from getting tangled up in something or the
collar from choking him to death.
Right after Mark did this, he called me on
the stand and said, you will never guess what I
did.. I couldnt believe
it. I was also very thankful that the deer did not
hurt him, which could have been possible. Mark
then texted our friend and told him about what
he did. In a little while our friend texted Mark
back and told him that he had just seen Little
Bucky without his collar.
Then Mark heard a gunshot from that way!
He thought, oh no!! Somebody just shot Little
Bucky thinking he was a doe or a spike! But, it
was our friend that shot his frst buck, a nice 7
point, right after Bucky came thru.
Some of the best memories in life are stories
and tales that are exchanged back at the deer
camp (which is our home in this situation). You
should have heard all of this in person or hear
my oldest grandson tell the story!!!
Hopefully Bucky will grow up to be a mature
buck in the wild, where nature can take its
course.

Planting WildfloWers
By Terry McFall, Jasper Master Gardener
Notes from a seminar by John
Thomas, founder of Wildseed Farms
www.wildseedfarms.com
With Christmas around the corner, consider
giving yourself a gift that keeps on giving into
spring and summer. Now is the time to plant
wildfowers in your garden, pasture, or roadside
for a bountiful spring bouquet.
John Thomas, founder of Wildseed Farms
(www.wildseedfarms.com) says between Sept. 15
and Dec. 15 is the perfect time to plant wildfower
seeds. These are short days and cool nights. The
ideal circumstances to get wildfowers growing
are a hot, dry summer, followed by fall rains,
and then a cold, wet winter. That sounds just like
East Texas.
Where to plant: Where to plant: Well drained site. Ideally
on a slope. Wildfowers hate wet feet. You can
plant into existing warm season grass (bahia,
bermuda, San Augustine, etc.). Typically the
wildfower seedlings will germinate, hunker
down, and grow roots.
The worst things you can plant into are cool
season grass (fescue, rescue grass, ryegrass, etc.)
or clover. Cool season grasses and clover compete
directly with the germinating and establishing
wildfowers. They shade wildfower seedlings,
grow faster, then fop over when taller, shading
them further.
Preparing site to plant: Preparing site to plant: Scalp the grass
with a mower. Then rake clippings off, exposing
some dirt to view. You can till lightly (top 1
inch). Do not till deeply, as copious weed seeds
will germinate. If you get a warm, wet spell, and
warm season grasses re-grow, go ahead and
mow again (raise the mower deck to cut above
wildfower seedlings).
How to plant: How to plant: Take a pinch of seed and plant
in a cup of potting soil. When they come up then
youll know what the baby plants look like in the
feld. Put the cup in a sunny spot on the back
porch to water regularly. For feld planting, wait
until afternoon when dew has dried. You want
seed to reach bare dirt, not get stuck on a wet
grass leaf.
Pour wildfower seeds equally into two
buckets. If planting a wildfower mix, stir the
seed by hand to mix the small seed with larger
fuffer seed. You can also mix clean builders
sand (not something you scrape up from the
creek bank full of weed seed) with seed to aid
spreading. Then, going north-south, from one
bucket, strew seed like feeding chickens. When
empty, strew the second bucket going east-west
over the same ground. Ideally, roll a cultipacker
over the area, or tromp around mashing seed
into frm contact with the soil. Seed must come
into direct contact with soil.
If you can water If you can water, apply for 4-6 days to
facilitate germination. If you cant water, youll
need 4-6 days of cool, moist soil. You want to
keep to keep the soil surface wet to the touch
during this period. Deep moisture is of no value.
In any case, go ahead and plant as early as you
can to help plants grow as much as possible
before the frst hard freeze. Bigger plants will
yield more and bigger fowers. After seeds
germinate, pull the water off (remember the wet
feet?)
You will know what the seedlings should
look like from the test cup you planted. You are
90 percent there when you get germination.
Germination is the most diffcult and critical step.
After blooming After blooming, look for plants to be mostly
brown (not necessarily all brown). Then mow
them down. In any case, you should mow before
July 4. Delaying will allow many weeds to mature
also, creating unnecessary problems next spring.
Additional notes from John Thomas:
90 percent of all TX wildfowers are annuals.
From Tenn. north, most are perennial where
they get longer, wetter winters.
10 days after germination, wildfower
seedlings can withstand a hard freeze.
Wildfowers are typically cool season plants
(thus the fall planting).
For any seed, plant no deeper than 3 times
its diameter.

For most wildfower seed, scattering on the
soil surface is best.
Most wildfowers need 5-6 hours of sunshine
to fourish. The sunnier, the better.
Once the seed gets wet, you want to keep it
moist until germination.
Most wildfowers are self-pollinating and
dont need insects. However, insects beneft
from pollen and nectar from the fowers.
A full stand of bluebonnets produces about
200 lbs. seed/acre.
Typically all wildfowers are broadleaf.
If you have a bald spot where grass and
weeds wont grow, dont expect wildfowers
to grow either!
Dont fertilize. Wildfowers are really just
pretty weeds and dont need it. Fertilizer will
only encourage grass.
Next spring, Ornamec 170 can be sprayed
over the top of wildfowers or seedlings to
kill grass, but not harm the fower plants or
other broadleaves. (This is optional)
Potential mixeslow growing: bluebonnet,
phlox, paintbrush, Calif. Poppy, all have
similar blooming time. Later blooming:
lemon mint, Indian blanket, standing
cypress, black-eyed Susan.
So there you have it! Break that mower
out of cold storage, scalp an area, rake the
clippings off, and scatter wildfower seeds to
your hearts content. But do it soonDec.

December 2012 is here and lots
of folks are busy getting ready for
Christmas.
December means Christmas and
Joy to so many; why not take a day
and give yourself and a friend a nice
day on the water chasing fsh. Enjoy
the day out and if you skipped work I
wont tell anyone. Now if you should
hook into that TROPHY BASS you may
be the one talking. There are lots of
days that are just gorgeous with cool
temperatures in the morning and
then warming in the afternoon so
dont miss out! One of the best things
to do this time of year is to cover a
lot of water. Two baits that do that,
are the Stanley spinner bait and the
Rat-L-Trap. Chunkin and windin
is the key to covering a lot of water
looking for active fsh. The weather
can change and fsh move with the
changes so be ready to try different
baits. Theres lots of grass in the back
of the pockets and the fsh will start
to hang around the edges and chase
shad to fatten up for winter. Lots of
folks love to fsh slow and there are
two baits that do just that. Senkos
and wacky worms will get a lot of
bites around the points and back into
the pockets. Working some crankbaits
off the long points will get a few fsh.
You could try dragging a Texas rig or
Stanley Football Jig along the edges.
The deep bite will still be there as the
fsh move in and out with the fronts
that pass through. Stay on your toes,
some of the bites will be very light. A
twitch of the line could be all you get
out of that lunker fsh as she sucks
it in then drops it. All you may feel
is that thump on the line. Dont get
caught sleeping this time of year as
the big girls move up.
I was thinking about fshing, and
thats when it hit me. Christmas is
a time of giving to others. As I was
thinking about what to get everyone
I decided to ask for a Christmas list
from them so I could have a few
things to choose from. Then I was
asked to make a list. Boy thats a big
can of worms to open. As they set out
to make me a list I started to make
mine for them. I think getting things
that you will use and enjoy is the
best. My list is all about FISHIN ! I
eased out to the boat to take a look
at all the tackle in there to see what
I needed. A few of my boxes havent
been opened in sometime and its
easy to see that a few of my baits have
turned into a gummy mess. Age does
that. Replacing them now would be
a good idea because good fshing is
just around the corner. My list starts
off with spinner baits, Rat-L-Traps,
crankbaits, new hooks and the top
secret baits from my local tackle
stores. Stop by, pick up a few baits,
and see whats new out there. Its an
easy way to stay on top of the game.
We have Gift Certifcates for that loved
one that wants to go fshing and learn
a few new tricks.
Remember the Sharelunker
Program entries started on October 1
and run thru April 30th. If you havent
heard, it encourages anglers who
catch a 13 pound - plus largemouth
bass to lend or donate it to the TPWD
for spawning purposes. There are
some great benefts doing this and
one of them is that the angler receives
a fberglass replica of the bass. There
is a 24- hour pager at 1-888-784-0600
Check out the program rules at
their site along with the benefts.
http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/spdest/
visitorcenters/tffc/sharelunker/
The Crappie are normally moving
up the river this time of year but with
little rain fall that may not be the
case. They may hang around a little
longer. There should be a few hanging
around the bridges and brush piles
and live bait has been the best. Good
luck!
I want to thank my sponsors and
many friends that have helped make
this a great year. Stanley Jigs, American
Rodsmiths, E2 Bait Company, Strike
Pro Lures and BassCat. Terry and
Connie at Jackson Hill Park and
Marina, Jerry and Glenda at Bass
Strike Tackle, Bowden Marine and
Larry and guys at Tri Lakes Tackle.
Now is the time to get your boats
down to the shop and have the boat
serviced so you are ready for the new
Year.
I want to thank everyone for coming
out and fshing with me. I hope you
have a very Merry Christmas and a
Happy New Year. See yall in 2013.
Mike and I hope everyone
has had a nice Thanksgiving. As
Outdoorsmen, we are looking
forward to Christmas and being
with our families and maybe the
occasional hunting or fshing gift.
Dont forget to stop in our local
tackle stores for your outdoor gifts,
Anns Tackle shop, Needmore Tackle,
and The Tackle Monkey.
We also want to congratulate
Albert Collins on winning the
Bassmaster Weekend series National
Championship. Good Luck at the
Classic.
Bass: Its time to break out the
Rat-L-Trap along secondary points
and main lake points. Just look to
the outside edges of the hydrilla.
Once it warms up dont be afraid to
go shallow. Colors that are working
well are Tennessee shad, Chrome
Blue back, and always Rayburn
red. Crankbaits are working well
in deeper water also. If you like
chunking a worm, slow down and
throw a June bug or black and blue
Texas rig.
Crappie: Some crappie are still
hanging out around deep brush and
can be caught on jigs and shiners.
Also use your graph to locate crappie
along the river channels.
Catfsh: Good time to bait up your
favorite hole and catch some cats.
If Mike and I can help you with
any of your outdoor needs just give
us a call. Get out and enjoy the
outdoors.

By Todd Driscoll (Texas Department of Parks and Wildlife)
Mysterious Blobs
are Bryozoans
Every year we receive numerous telephone calls from concerned citizens describing peculiar,
jelly-like masses spherical in shape at numerous East Texas reservoirs, including Sam Rayburn
and Toledo Bend. People most often see them either attached to standing timber or wind-rowed along
shore after storms with strong winds. Most folks assume that these blobs are fsh/frog eggs, freshwater
jellyfsh, or mutant organisms refective of poor water quality conditions or pollution. However, they
are very unique invertebrates known as bryozoans, or more commonly moss animals and are
generally a sign of good water quality and rarely cause problems.
Although there are over 5,000 species of bryozoans, only about 50 species inhabit freshwater.
Bryozoans are sessile organisms, meaning that they attach to submersed surfaces like boat docks,
standing timber, and brushpiles. We are aware of only one bryozoan species in Sam Rayburn and
Toledo Bend, Pectinatella magnifca, which are brownish-grey in color with what appears to be little
black dots embedded in them. They are most frequently sighted during summer and fall months when
declining water levels lead to exposure. Bryozoans are colonial, as each blob is actually a large group
of individual, identical organisms called zooids. Largest colonies can exceed two feet in diameter
and contain several million zooids, but most are one foot or less in diameter. Each zooid produces
a gelatinous protective layer made mostly of water, giving the bryozoan colony a frm but slimy
form. Each zooid also has whirls of feeding tentacles which flter microscopic plants and animals
(plankton), similar to feeding mechanisms of sponges. Millions of feeding tentacles create constant
water fow around the bryozoan, creating a constant food source for the colony as well as a host of
other freshwater invertebrates that use the bryozoan as habitat.
Bryozoans require warm water to remain active in their colonial form. Colonies can grow very
rapidly, doubling in size in about 4 days under ideal conditions. As water cools in late fall, the colony
dissolves and releases foating reproductive structures called statoblasts, which are similar to eggs
or spores. Statoblasts are transported by wind and waves but also have tiny hooks to aid in dispersal
by attaching to other objects or organisms. They can remain dormant for extended periods and
withstand drying and freezing. When conditions are favorable, statoblasts germinate into individual
zooids which continue dividing to eventually form a new bryozoan colony.
Although much is still unknown regarding bryozoan impacts, all current research indicates they
are completely harmless to humans. Since bryozoans are sessile organisms, they cannot move to
escape predation. Most species have developed chemical defenses that prevent other organisms from
eating them. In fact, preliminary studies indicate chemicals present in saltwater bryozoans may fght
cancer and are now being tested in clinical trials.
If you have questions about the fsheries of area lakes, stop by the Inland Fisheries
offce at the Jasper State Fish Hatchery or contact us by phone (409-384-9572) or

The D-Shad is a new breed of soft plastic jerk bait. It has a
streamlined body designed to give that side-to-side twitching
action, but the tail is thicker and heavier so when you kill the
bait it sinks level and gives a little shimmy.
It will work great by itself weightless for twitching, but also
give it a try on your Carolina Rig, or behind your
Chatterbaits or Scroungers. However you use the
new D-Shad you are sure to catch them!

Lake Cottages. You never

Right now the lake is in great shape with plenty
of water. It looks like were going to have another
below average winter, based on the long-term weather
forecasters. That being the case, December can be a
great month to be on the lake for catching numbers
and quality fsh across the board.
When the water temperature starts dropping
below 50 degrees the basss metabolism starts to
slow down conserving energy. Bass will become less
active immobilizing themselves in deep water where
the temperature variances remain fairly stable. In
general, the most productive lures for fshing this
time of year are the jig and pig, soft plastics, large
deep diving crank baits and spoons. Jigs in black/blue,
brown/amber and camo are usually good choices.
Craw worms in reds, greens and pumpkin are effective
and deep diving crank baits (DD 22s, Mud Bugs) in
shad and crawfsh colors work well. Also, a to oz
jigging spoon vertically fshed over deep water humps
can be very productive. The key is to fsh slowly to
trigger a bite.
December is one of the prime months to load up
your cooler with Crappie and White Bass. The Crappie
will be holding on the ledges and drops along the
old river channel. Concentrate fshing vertically over
natural or man-made cover. I like to use braided line
and a long shank hook. Fishing over heavy brush you
need the extra strength to wrestle a three plus pounder
out of the brush or you can usually straighten the
hook out without breaking off if you get hung up.
Also, since braided line has no stretch, you have a lot
more sensitivity and can feel a subtle bite much better
than with monoflament. Shiners or jigs work best.
The Whites will be holding on the north end
sandbars. Concentrate on the inside bends along the
old river channel. Use your electronics to fnd the
baitfsh and you will usually fnd the Whites. Slab
spoons, tail spinners and Rat-L-Traps usually work
best.
Hello, Anglers.
Hard to believe it is
December...time passes
quickly when you get
to spend it on some
awesome fshing holes.
As a deep water angler, I love December as some of
my best days ever have been on Toledo in December.
December 20, 2011 we were fortunate enough to catch
a 10 lb 13 oz largemouth while soaking a jigging
spoon in nearly 40 feet of water in the Indian/Buck
Creek area of south Toledo.
At press time for this column the lake level is stable,
just under 168 feet. If the lake remains near this level
or lower, fshing will be excellent all winter. Heavy rains
and a quick rise of several feet will change things and
will also move around much of the fsh population.
That does not mean it will be bad for the lake if that
happens, it just means that winter patterns will be
impacted and it could slow things down for a while.
Meanwhile, our patterns are mostly basic with
Stanley Vibra Wedge double willowleaf blades in
3/8 to 3/4 oz worked along the outside edge of
submerged hydrilla. This is a dependable pattern for
early morning, late afternoon and cloudy conditions.
Texas rigged Berkley Havoc Bottom Hoppers and Trick
Worms are always on top of my Skeeter FX Day-box
and we are working them slowly in 12 to 25 feet
depths. We also are working a Stanley Bugeye football
jig with Havoc Rocket Craw trailer on ridges/humps/
points with depths of 15 to 30 feet with no grass.
We are also working crankbaits using both DLNs
(Bill Norman) and also DD22s for suspended bass as
well as for those bass hanging close to deep grass. We
like fretiger, bumble bee, blue chartreuse and sexy
shad colors for crankbaits. Jigging spoons are always
on our December list of tools as is a drop shot. We
are using 1/2 and 3/4 oz hammered spoons while
for drop shot we are using 1/4 and 3/8 oz drop shot
sinkers with Havocs Bottom Hopper Jr. (4.75 inch) as
our favorite drop shot plastic. Yamamoto also makes
a great drop shot worm. Depending on conditions we
are working spoons and drop shot rigs from 18 to 45
feet with 30 to 38 average depths.
CRAPPIE AND YELLOW BASS: If water temps
get down in the low 50s and lower with the lake
remaining clear at The Chicken Coop, then we could
have another banner year. Last year was amazing!
It could start by the time this is published (early
December) but most Toledo seasoned perch jerkers
say the magic time is around Dec 10-15. It all depends
on cold weather and lake clarity.
Yellow bass have been plentiful all fall and the
bigger yellows (females) should start showing up
about now through early January. They usually spawn
on deep sandy fats in December/January. A quality
electronic (I use Hummingbirds 998c with side
imaging) is very helpful when using jigging spoons
and working deep schools of fsh and baitfsh.

Bass ~ Good! Start
out early in the month
fshing mid depth 8ft to
18ft with a crankbait
in blue chartreuse
or black back /white
as the water temp drops, follow baitfsh into deeper
water at mouths of creeks in the 25ft to 40ft range.
Use your electronics to fnd bait then fsh a 1oz slab
spoon vertically. Another way to catch a lot of fsh will
be around scattered grass patches with a jig in black
blue purple. Dont forget your Kickn bass TFO rods
and FINS braid to help make every trip great.
Crappie ~ Good! Fish are over the brush in 15ft
to 25ft on shiners and will move deeper as the water
gets colder making the Chicken Coop the place to be.
If the weather stays warm you can fnd them towards
the backs of the creeks.

Hello, Anglers! I thought I would pass on some new fshing product information as Christmas is
again in the wings and it is time to start thinking very seriously about selecting gifts for those fshing
addicts in our lives. Most serious anglers love to stay on top of the latest technology in every aspect of
fshing but especially when it comes to fshing reels.
The choice of fshing reels is a very important factor when it comes to putting together the tools that
are necessary to consistently make a dent in the fshing population. One of the top brands of reels on the
market for the past 40-50 years is Abu Garcia.
I have been using these reels for 35 plus years and the many choices and quality workmanship for
Abu Garcia products have never been better than today. There are also other quality reels out there as
well but I am the most familiar with Abu Garcia.
Many anglers, especially experienced anglers, are diffcult to gift. The Revo Series of reels is
currently one of the best selling and highest rated fshing reels available.
I will mention three of them as there are 10 in the baitcast series and 4 Revos in the spinning reel
series. The frst is the baitcast Revo S which is redesigned from last year and weighs 7.62 ozs. which is
1.09 ozs. less than the earlier, already light weight model. Retailing at $129.95 it also has a new pearl
color and is very smooth casting with line capacity of 145 yds. with 12 lb test.
Another baitcast is the Revo STX which is their best seller and it also was recently upgraded
from the original weight of 8.90 ozs. to the new reel which only weighs 6.46 ozs. Thats an amazing
decrease of 2.44 ozs. in weight. I have both reels, the original as well as the upgrade and the difference
is very signifcant especially when you have a long day of fshing. The new STX holds the same
amount of line as the older model at 145 yds. of 12 lb test and the price is unchanged at $199.95.
The fnal reel is the fagship of the Revo Series the MGX which is every freshwater anglers dream
reel weighing only 5.4 ozs. One of the most technical reels ever designed, the MGX line capacity is
115 yds. of 12 lb test, the reel is very smooth, quiet, super strong and light as a feather. It will spoil you
but it is not cheap at $349.95.

By Jim Binns
When To Hold em &
When To Fold em
It was a pretty good morning of fshing at the
spot but suddenly the bass just quit biting. Was
it time to leave and look for greener pastures or
time to wait them out? This is a scenario that
is played out many times on our area lakes. So
what should you do?
Well the real answer is based on experience.
If you have ever watched the professional poker
players on TV you know that they understand
when to fold their cards or when to raise the ante
and go all in. Much, if not all of this is based
on past experience.
Professional fshermen go through this
dilemma on a daily basis. Many believe in sitting
on a hole for hours, milking it for all its worth,
while other pros opt for hitting a spot for a
couple of casts and then moving somewhere else.
If you make the right decision you look like a
hero, but the wrong decision can leave you with
an empty bag at weigh-in time. So we are back to
this decision making thing.
First of all, each angler should weigh all the
factors involved such as past experience on the
spot, time of day, and whether he is looking
for schooling fsh or one or two lunkers. Each
fshing location has its own personality and its
up to the angler to make an educated guess as
to what to do. If you feel that the spot has all of
the right elements such as depth, cover, etc., then
this may be a good place to sit on for awhile. Pre-
fshing can help in this area by allowing you to
hit the spot at different times of the day to see if
you can develop a pattern.
There are a couple other things that might
infuence whether you stay or go. For one thing
if the fshing is slow, it may well be slow for
everyone. A spot holding some quality size fsh
may be worth investing more fshing time rather
that running around all over the lake. The other
factor to consider is that if you know there is a
big school of fsh in the area then it might be a
good idea to wait them out hoping that sooner or
later they will move in to feed.
Pro anglers that move from spot to spot are
usually not doing so in a haphazard manner. In
most cases they have usually caught a fsh or two
at each location and are making what is referred
to as a milk-run. If they hit four or fve places
that are relatively close together they are hoping
that the fsh will be active at a few of these spots
and they can get a quick limit. Bass will usually
feed in spurts during the day and the anglers
hope to time the feeding pattern with when they
are fshing the spot. Bass will lay off structure
and then factors such as a major feeding period,
baitfsh activity, wind, cloud cover, etc., can
cause them to go from semi-dormant to actively
feeding in a short period of time.
One thing to be aware of when testing these
spots is the simple fact that bass will often react
to some baits and totally ignore others. That
is why you should use a variety of baits when
you test a spot to see what the bass want at that
particular time. Recently on Toledo Bend I was
just hammering the bass on a jigging spoon,
yet when I tried a Texas-rig, crankbait and
spinnerbait in the same spot they wouldnt touch
it. Many times just down-sizing your baits or
rotating between baits that have rattlers vs. those
that dont can be a major factor in getting a
strike or not. Another good tip is to leave the spot
after you catch a few fsh. Go fsh another area,
and then hit it again after the spot has rested
for awhile.
One of the pros at the Bassmaster Classic
only had two spots that he had confdence in
and he protected these spots like a junkyard
dog. He would work one spot with four or fve
baits and then head for the next spot. He did
this all day long and wound up taking home
a respectable check for his efforts. He was
looking for quality bass, not schoolies, and had
dedicated himself to these two spots that had
produced a couple of nice size bass during his
days of pre-fshing. He also stated that he used
less gasoline in this tournament than any event
that he had ever fshed.
This story brings up a good point that many
anglers forget. If you catch fsh in one type of
area, get that map out and try to fnd a few other
near-by areas that have the same depth, cover,
etc. If the fsh are relating to one spot, try to fnd
as many spots that look the same and now you
can start developing your own milk-run.
The more time you spend on the water the
easier it is to make these decisions. As your
experience builds so will your confdence in
judging a spot. Good anglers develop an instinct
that tells them pretty fast whether to leave a spot
or stay. Sure you wont always make the correct
decision, but thats just fshing.
Another thing to consider is just how patient
a fsherman you are. If you are by nature a
run-and-gun type individual you may fnd
it VERY hard to sit on a spot for a long period
of time. Weekend anglers are certainly pressed
for time, however, they need to take more time
in analyzing a spot they are fshing and make
sure that they dont leave just because the strikes
have slowed down. or stopped. This is the time
where a different lure or color may get the bass
going again.
I read somewhere that bass fshing is a big
game of what-ifs and I should have done
this. What if I used a crankbait rather than a
plastic worm. What if I fshed north instead of
south. What if You get the picture.
My recommendation is to spend as much time
on the water so you can to develop your hold
em or fold em skills. By having several spots
close together and rotating through them you
can increase your odds that you will be fshing a
good location when the bass turn on. And when
you catch a large bass, you can be sure that this
is a spot that you may need to spend much more
time fshing.
Nothing in fshing is fool-proof but some
of this information may allow you to better
manage your day on the water. And keep in
mind that very few bass are caught when you
are running down the lake at 60 mph. Let your
on-water experience be the guide as to how
many spots you need to fsh and how long to
stay on each spot.
Good Fishing -- JB

Area Club Updates
Many Bass Club Hawg Hunter Bass Club
Harvey Coward returned to his winning ways and won the Many Bass Clubs November
2012 tournament with a fve fsh limit weighing 16.82 lbs. Fishing grassy points in the
southern part of Toledo Bend, Coward caught his fsh using soft plastic and jigs in 812
feet of water. Jimmy Campbell was the 2nd place & big bass winner with a fve fsh
limit weighing 13.08 lbs and Paul Hammontree fnished in 3rd place with a fve fsh limit
weighing 10.29 lbs. The big bass for the
tournament weighed 4.65 lbs.
A total of 50 fsh were caught
weighing 107 lbs for an average fsh
weight of 2.1 lbs.
The Many Bass Clubs fnal
tournament of the year is in December.
This year the race for Angler of the Year
is going down to the wire. The leading
two top place anglers are separated by
a mere 2.15 lbs. While a tight contest is
not an uncommon event for the title of
Angler of the Year, this year the two top
anglers are father and son. Good luck
gentlemen may the best man win!

Harvey Coward championed
the November Many Bass Club
tournament, winning 1st place by
more than a three pound margin.
The Hawg Hunter Bass Club of Lake Charles held our October tournament on Toledo
Bend. Fred Berger and Mike Collins used Yellow Magic topwater plugs as well as Carolina
rigged fukes to catch a 5 fsh tournament limit that weighed 15.17 lbs. which earned them
1st place honors. Quincy and Larry Byrd used Oldham jigs for a 2nd place fnish, weighing
14.14 lbs. Third place was taken by the team of David Katchur and Stewart Hunt with a 5
fsh limit weighing 14.06 lbs.
Frank Little caught a 4.13 lber, which took big bass
honors for the tournament.
Once again we were on Toledo Bend for our November
tournament. Last months 3rd place team Stewart Hunt
and David Katchur got a little greedy this month and
brought a solid 5 fsh limit to the scales weighing 21.24
lbs. to earn them 1st place. Hunt and Katchur reported
catching their fsh on a jig. Hunt caught the big fsh of the
tournament which was a 6.50 lber.
Fishing alone, Dean Jones also used a jig to catch a
5 fsh tournament limit weighing 17.70 lbs for a second
place fnish. Frank Little and Tracy Bowles took 3rd place
with 17.50 lbs.

The 409 Bass Club held their last regular season tournament on Sam Rayburn on
November 7th and 10th. Big Sam was tough once again leaving many to scratch their
heads wondering where the bigger fsh are hiding. 19 anglers showed up to fsh for the
all cash purse and some needed a strong fnal tournament to claim angler of the year
and top six status. The weather conditions on Wednesday was calm winds in the morning
and sunny skies with temps running in the 70s. The anglers that fshed on Saturday
faced brutally strong winds out of the Southeast limiting the places that could be fshed
effectively. Tony Ikner was able to catch a 11.56lb limit that took frst place his creel was
anchored by a nice 3.74lb fsh that took home top big bass honors. Second place went to
Bryan Lohr and Gary Osborne with 10.66lbs. Most anglers reported that Carolina rigs and
fnesse soft plastics seemed to be the only way to catch their fsh. The third place team
Steven and Doug caught 9.66lbs fipping grass.
The angler of the year race was
tight heading into the last tournament.
Jim Mcdonald edged out Steven
Desormeaux and Bubba Courts to take
home the title. Marcus Van Horn edged
out Steven Desormeaux to win Summer
Series Champion by mere ounces.
Jim Mcdonald also took home the
progressive big bass pot with a 3.65lb
fsh caught in October. Congratulations
to all of our winners it has been an
exciting year and we appreciate the
participation. The 409 Bass Club will
hold their season Championship on
December 8th out of Six Mile on Toledo
Bend. The 409 bass club would like to
thank Bass Kandi, R1 Bass, and Simon
Outftters for their continuing support.
2nd place was won by Jimmy Campbell, anchored by the
Big Bass of the tournament weighing in at 4.65 lbs. His
fnish put him in tight contention for the AOY race against
his father with only one tournament to go.
Paul Hammontree won
3rd place with 10.29 lbs

POWER PROTECTION
NEVER BE WITHOUT POWER AGAIN
By Patty Lenderman
Stepping up to the challenge
We are very fortunate in this business to
make the acquaintance of a multitude and array
of adventurous people who like to challenge
themselves and their skills to acquire the bounty
of the great outdoors.
There is a reason, too, why it is called the
Great Outdoors. It would be so easy to slip into
that one, but that is a story all its own. For now,
Id like to introduce you to a young lady that
can easily be described as brave, adventurous,
determined and has a love of life that simply
exudes from her. Her name is Jessica Simons, a
21 year old from Deep East Texas.
I frst met her mother about a year ago. Jessica
had caught a new record for Blue Catfsh by
trot-lining on the Angelina River. Her new record
catch weighed 41 pounds! Mrs. Simons was very
proud of the recognition Texas Parks & Wildlife
gave to her daughter as the new record holder
and shared it with the Lakecaster along with
many pictures.
Just a month or so ago, Jessica and her father
came to the Lakecaster offce to share another
adventure she had this year.
I am always looking for something new
that Ive never tried or done before, Jessica
explained. My family and I fsh Dam B a lot
together, and I knew that gator season was
getting close. Alligator season is in September,
and Jessica began preparing for this adventure
in July. I talked to my family about it, and many
just laughed and shook their heads when I told
them I wanted to apply for a tag. According
to Jessicas dad, since she was just a little girl,
she has sought out challenges, and in most
cases has embarked on each adventure and has
championed them.
An alligator is a very strong, potentially
dangerous creature. Jessica knew this may be one
of those adventures she could use back-up on.
I asked my mom (Francis Simons) and cousin
Jacob Simons if they would be interested in going
on this alligator hunt with me. They agreed, but
I think they were thinking that there was no way
I would actually get a tag.
TP&W awards tags via drawing from applicants
to hunt these elusive, pre-historic creatures on
Dam-B for one specifed weekend in September.
Jessica flled out the application and the list of
other family members names in July. Within a
month after I sent it in, I received a letter in the
mail. We were so surprised when there was not
one, but THREE tags awarded to us!
The hunt would be September 11-12, and
there was a lot to do to prepare. Ive been
fshing on Dam-B my whole life, so I already had
a pretty good idea where to set the lines. She
also consulted with several other people to get
their advice before making her fnal decision.
We arrived at Dam-B at 11:00 that Tuesday
morning for an orientation given by Texas Parks
& Wildlife. Everyones safety is the frst issue for
TP&W. The hunting time started at noon on
Tuesday and was over by noon on Wednesday.
The family set out on Dam-B to their three
chosen spots and set their lines. We used 350
lb test line, a 14/0 hook and chicken for bait.
Securing their lines to a tree, then hanging the
bait over the water, hours later they went to
check to see if they had caught anything. We
had hung our bait too close to the water and
some other critter got the bait. We re-baited
the hooks and set the lines higher. The next
morning they went back to check their lines.
There was an alligator on every hook!
Now they had a very powerful animal on the
end of a very strong line that was not in a very
good mood. The family worked together, and
one would pull the line up for the tag holder to
be able to shoot the catch. We used a 12 gauge
shotgun. An alligators skin and scales are like
armor. There is one specifc soft spot to shoot or
the bullets will defect off of its body. It is a small
triangular area behind the skull.
We were so excited! Once we shot each one
and loaded them into the boat, there were TP&W
personnel on site to weigh, measure, record the
information on each and help clean them.
Their biggest one was 10 9 long, and the other
two exceeded 7 feet.
The longest documented alligator was taken
in 1890 from Louisiana. It measured 19 feet 2
inches and probably weighed near 2,000 pounds.
In Texas, the largest wild alligator harvested
was a male, measuring 14 feet 4 inches. Female
alligators rarely exceed 8 in length.
Im not done yet! Jessica declared. Among
a wide variety of adventures and challenges she
is looking forward to, Moose hunting and sky
diving are at the top of my list!

By Robert Baker, TPWD
All I want for Christmas
It is getting close to Christmas and many
people start to think about what they want. These
things may be large or small, expensive or cheap,
complex or simple, but the one thing that binds
them all is every person has one. For those that
hunt these things may be a little different.
One of the top things on most deer hunters list
is that once in a lifetime -huge antlered buck.
To accomplish this goal a hunter may need to
make some changes to the way they normally
hunt. Examples of these things include hunting
at different times, hunting different areas, or
hunting during different conditions.
Many hunters might want a new off road
vehicle. Things that they should take into
account are cost, drivers ability, capabilities
needed from the vehicle, and ability to transport
it from area to area. Some of these factors
are common sense, but I would like to focus
on drivers ability. Every rider should take an
approved ATV operators course, and wear the
appropriate safety gear including helmet, boots,
and clothing.
A new frearm or bow may be on your list.
When picking out a new frearm pick one out
that fts not only the body size, but also the
caliber. This may seem like common sense, but
particularly with kids if the gun has too much
recoil they will get scared or finch and miss
shots or not like shooting it. When picking out
a bow make sure that the draw weight is light
enough that it can be pulled back, but heavy
enough for a good shot. This may not be as
simple as it seems. Just because a person can pull
it back once does not mean that they can pull
it back enough for multiple shots or enough to
practice to get good.
For those with a new trail camera in mind
take care took look at few things other than the
number of mega pixels. Read a little about the
camera and see what size and type of sd card that
it takes. This is important because some cameras
may only take odd sizes or smaller capacities
that make dealing with pictures harder. Also,
take a look at the rate of picture taking and the
delay between when the camera is triggered
and the picture is taken. Cameras that have an
adjustable rate of picture taking and a short
delay in time from being triggered and taking
the picture are best.
Feeders are things that many hunters like
to use in Texas. When buying one think about
several issues and dont just buy the frst one in
your price range. Before looking at feeders think
about what type of feed you want to provide. This
is important because some feeds such as high
protein do not do well in spin feeders. Another
thing to look at is the amount of feed that it
holds. This is important because the larger
the size the less often it needs to be flled, but
it should still be checked to ensure that it is in
good working order.
Many people have many different wants and
desires for this Holiday Season. The one
thing that I want is for everybody to have a safe
and Happy Christmas. And if there is some time
left over spend it outdoors because life is more
fun outside.

Santa...
