Tune Up!
Article by: Kerry Clarke and Heather McLaughlin From the 9th to the 11th of November, Community Music Victoria held Tune Up! (weekend camp). It was a chance to get together in a beautiful setting on the banks of the Yarra River to play music and swap tunes, songs and stories with other like-minded music makers from across Victoria. The following is Kerry Clark and Heather McLauglin (both workshop leaders) accounts of Tune Up.

Tune Up!

Kerry Clarke AaahhhTune Up! (To quote Michelle Morgan) What more is there to say!! I am sure I will think of something!! As usual it was a great weekend of singing, talking, eating, laughing, playing instruments and sharing uplifting experiences. For me the singing (Note to self - beware of writing sining as a typo!!) is the pinnacle of happiness and pleasure. I had a great time learning new songs, warm ups, harmonies, styles and more. I came away with a lot of new ideas, repertoire and methods to try with my singing groups. It was lovely to meet new people and to renew past friendships. On a personal level the joy of being with like minded lovers of song, rejuvenated me to continue leading community singing and spreading the notion of Community Music making. By this time of the year I am usually getting a bit jaded and the session on Leading Groups gave me fresh ideas about renewing a tired group and a tired leader. The formal workshops were valuable and informative and always included plenty of singing. The less formal sessions and ad hoc sings and sharing were open and welcoming and gave a lot of pleasure to those participating. I also learnt from Lyndal the dangers of FOMO Syndrome (Fear of Missing Out) and should have stopped singing and gone to bed a little earlier but hey it was sooo much fun! I wish I had a picture to insert but I was too busy singing!! My only complaint was that I finished the weekend with an aching face from smiling and laughing for me it just accompanies singing and cannot be avoided. Thanks to all the participants for their great music and to all the CMVic fine folk for their hard work and commitment to bring us all together. I look forward to next year cannot come soon enough for me!!

December 2012 Edition

Heather McLauglin This year there was a strong representation of instrumental music as well as singing at the CMVic Tune Up weekend at Amberley.

Workshop sessions ranged from Old Time strings with Andy Baylor, Ukes, Marimbas and Voices with Dani Rocca and Adam Burke, Ukelele leadership with Bruce Watson, and session culture with Rick e Vengeance and Lyndal Chambers. Sunday had two sessions of Community Ensemble with Aaron Silver and Bec Rigby. A set of four home-made Jon Madin marimbas was permanently on hand in the big downstairs room, and further marimba playing was offered in the workshops Introduction to Marimbas with Heather McLaughlin and Wacapella: Using Marimbas in singing Groups with Kass Mulvaney, who suggests that a good gutsy marimba can amplify a bass line, and be used even if you have no male singers in a group. In addition to this wide variety of official workshops, there was instrumental music going on at various times throughout the weekend in corners, in spare rooms, in hallways, and especially around the campfire on Saturday night.

A wonderful thing about the weekend was the way that singing and instruments were so often combined in the Friday night Welcome session, in the campfire music, and in much of the spontaneous music happening all around the building over the weekend. SHOUT! December 2012 Edition 3

It was an inspiring weekend of playing as well as singing. Much of it has been captured on video for those who were there to be reminded and for those who couldnt be there to get a taste. So much enjoyable music-making!

Making Music Around Victoria

Heather McLaughlin
A marimba-making day (part of the current CMVic/Nillumbik Shire project for the Eltham area) was held on Saturday October 27th. It was a great success! The teachers and kids at Arthurs Creek

Primary School (the beneficiary) are all thrilled. It is such an empowering thing for both adults and children to take a pile of assorted wood and have a lovely instrument at the end of the day. Each child or adult who chiselled a bar in tune signed their name under the note - a small triumph and satisfying achievement. This workshop was a true community event. Using Jon Madin's book "Make Your Own Marimbas", we succeeded in making a 3 1/2 octave marimba on the day. It was held at the Hurstbridge Learning Co-operative primary school, with three families from Arthurs Creek Primary School, one family from the 'Co-op', and five rather random adults, two of whom had woodworking skills. Mitre 10 Diamond Creek gave us the materials for half price. Back to the top

Help needed
Save Orchestra Victoria The Symphony Orchestra Musicians Association (SOMA) have engaged in a campaign to secure the future of their organisation. Government funding reviews have meant that the orchestra is facing crisis, in the suggestion that there will be no permanent orchestra, with instead sporadic contracting and the predicted loss of 50-60 jobs. With the organisations central role in collaborating with the Australian Ballet, Australian Opera and Victoria Opera companies, the musicians fear these changes will influence the quality and future of their orchestra. Please help them to raise awareness and improve Government funding and grants, by heading to their facebook page and learning more about the situation at hand. http://www.facebook.com/GreatCitieshaveGreatOrchestras Back to the top

The Australia Councils Music in Communities New Survey: Open Now for Community Choirs CLICK HERE TO TAKE THE SURVEY https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/communitychoirs We invite all community-based choirs across Australia to take part in our current grassroots research project. The survey should be completed by one member of each choir, preferably the manager, musical director, or someone who knows the workings of the choir and its membership quite well. Who should complete this survey? Anyone running a choir or singing group in Australia, particularly community-based choirs. We would like one response per group. If you manage more than one choir, please complete the survey separately for each. How long will it take? It shouldn't take more than 5 minutes. Will my answers be made public? Survey responses will be collated to present a profile of choirs in Australia but no individual responses will be identified in public. What are the questions? The questions relate the type of choir, the pathway to membership (audition or non-audition), musical style, musical demands, budgeting, leadership, participation, and some basic information about the choir. It is very straightforward and should only take five minutes.
