Definition
Calculus is the study of 'Rates of Change.

Branches of calculus
Differential calculus determines the rate of change of a quantity. Integral calculus finds the quantity where the rate of change is known.

Explanation by Example
Look at Figure. On the left is a man pushing a crate up a straight incline. On the right, the man is pushing the same crate up a curving incline. The problem, in both cases, is to determine the amount of energy required to push the crate to the top. You can do the problem on the left with regular math. For the one on the right, you need calculus. For the straight incline, the man pushes with an unchanging force, and the crate goes up the incline at an unchanging speed. With some simple physics formulas and regular math, you can compute how many calories of energy are required to push the crate up the incline. Note that the amount of energy expended each second remains the same. For the curving incline, on the other hand, things are constantly changing. The steepness of the incline is changing and not just in increments like, its one steepness for the first 10 feet then a different steepness for the next 10 feet, its constantly changing. And the man pushes with a constantly changing force, the steeper the incline, the harder the push. As a result, the amount of energy expended is also changing, not every second or every thousandth of a second, but constantly changing from one moment to the next. Thats what makes it a calculus problem. By this time, it should come as no surprise to you that calculus is described as the mathematics of change.

Importance of calculus for B.B.A students and in Economics

The B.B.A students are related with business and administration. There is a big need for them to study calculus. There occur regular changes in business and manufacturing, the business students have to calculate these changes to know the business performance and the needed production. The business students can maximize their profits by calculating these changes with the help of calculus. With the help of calculus they know how much they are paying for the costs, as we know at some level if the production is increased the profit is decreased. If the student will have the knowledge of calculus he will determine his production boundary and will remain safe from production loss. With the help of calculus he will predict the future figures of production and profit/loss based on past data. As calculus deals with the quantity and quality factors, the student can evaluate the performances of his staff by the qualitative approach. It

also helps the business students to evaluate the different businesss outcomes, then the students can select the best outcome business.
Calculas is very useful in the field of economics. When we study the firms behavior concepts and cost concepts it helps us to calculate marginal rates.
