Texting Olympics
Our class is holding a Texting Olympics to find out who has the fastest thumb in the program. Is there a relationship between texting speeds? Events include: Sprint: Texting a straightforward message Hurdles: Texting a message that includes, numbers, symbols, and punctuation

Sprint
Please pick me up after school today. I have to stay for math help.

Hurdles
Guess what? The vball team won states 3 to 1!!! Woooo :)

1) With a partner, record each others times for each of the events. Share your data with the class to complete the table. Name Sprint (seconds) x Hurdles (seconds) y

2) Graph your data. Let x = sprint time and let y = hurdles time.

3) Do you think there is a relationship between the time it takes to text the sprint message and the time it takes to text the hurdles message? Why?

If so, is this relationship positive or negative? Explain.

Follow the directions on these pages to enter your data into a graphing calculator to construct a scatter plot and find a line of best fit. Check off each step as you complete it.

4) Press

and

any equations that are already typed in.

Entering Data 5) Press and select 1:Edit by pressing

6) Enter the Sprint Time in L1. 7) Enter the Hurdles Time in L2. 8) Press to set up the proper scale for the axes.

Use the same scale as when you graphed it by hand. Xmin = 0 Xmax = highest x value on your graph Xscl = scale you went up by Ymin = 0 Ymax = highest y value on your graph Yscl = scale you went up by

Graphing the Data 9) Press to reach [STAT PLOT] and select 1: Plot1 by pressing .

10) Use the cursors and enter to set up the plot as shown.

11) Press

to see the plot.

Does the plot look like the one you graphed?

Analyzing the Data 12) Find a linear regression equation (line of best fit) for the data. Press and move the cursor to the right to the CALC menu. 13) Select 4:LinReg(ax+b) and press .

14) Enter L1 and L2. Press

15) Press

and move the cursor to the Y-VARS menu.

16) Select 1:Function and 1:Y1 by pressing

twice.

17) Press ENTER to calculate the equation for the line of best fit. On your screen will appear: LinReg y = ax+b a = slope b = y intercept r2 = r= What is the slope of your line (to three decimal places)? What is the y-intercept of your line (to three decimal places)? What is the slope-intercept equation of your line?

19) Press 20) Press

to see the function. to see the graph of the line of best fit.

Follow-Up Questions 21) Look at the graph of the best fit line. Do you think the line fits the data well? Why?

22) Does the line go through all the data points? If not, explain why.

23) Explain how you could have found the line of best fit without a calculator.
