Olympic Sports Project

Objectives: The student will be able to


identify several Olympic sports. explain the rules, skills, equipment of an Olympic sport. describe the history of an Olympic sport. gain a better understanding of how to organize an oral presentation

Resources: students will need to be efficient using the internet. Time Required: students will have 2 weeks to research and 2 class sessions of 80 minutes each to make presentations in the classroom (4th and 6th/09). Introduction: Would you like to become an Olympic Athlete one day? Before you answer the question, lets start finding out which sport events are part of this major competition. Task: You will decide on an Olympic sport to research: Archery Badminton Baseball Basketball Boardsailing Boxing Canoeing and kayaking Cycling Diving Equestrian Fencing Football (Soccer) Field Hockey Gymnastics Judo Jumping events:Track & Field Modern Pentathlon Paralympic Games Rowing Running events:Track & Field Sailing Shooting Softball Swimming Table tennis Taekwondo Team Handball Tennis Throwing events: discus, javelin, shot put, hammer Trampoline Triathlon, Heptathlon and Decathlon Volleyball and Beach Volleyball Water Polo Weightlifting Wrestling

No student may do the same sport. Develop questions about your sport. Refer to Who, What, When, Where and How. For example, Who created/invented the sport? Who was the 1st Olympic champion? What do you need to do/to wear? When did it become an Olympic sport? Where does it come from? How do sport men and women are selected to be Olympic athletes?

Research and answer your questions. Organize the information to present it through power point. Make an oral presentation to the rest of the class.
