Bains Deli Reopens on

Landis Ave., Starts Revival of

Restaurant Row Initiative
Bains Deli has reopened under a new fran-
chisee ownership, a hands-on team that has
managed a couple of Bains locations owned by
the Bains franchisor. Look for fresh deli sand-
wiches, wraps, healthy salads, and coffee drinks
at the 636 E. Landis Avenue location. Hours are
Monday through Saturday, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Also in the 700 block of the Avenue, Kawa
Thai, located at Union Crossing, will be opening
a second eatery in the prior Crepemaker Caf
location, possibly by Christmas. And Zygii
Dobkowski, a professional chef, is working on
opening his Landis Pig Roast at 623 E. Landis
Avenue, which will offer roast pigs, pulled pork,
pork sandwiches, ribs, as well as sides.
Established eateries Sweet Life Bakery and
Moris at Landis Theater are also included in
Vinelands Restaurant Row. Sandy Forosisky, the
citys director of redevelopment calls the five
eateries a nice mix.
M
ore than 300 students from all Vineland
Public Schools, private and parochial schools
in the community worked together to bright-
en downtown businesses for the holiday season,
according to John and Denise Procopio, coordinators
of the project.
The event, now in its fourth year, is intended to
establish and build strong relationships between the
schools, students, businesses and community as a
whole, according to the Procopios.
The students descended on the downtown district
on November 16, working on decorations to beautify
Christmas trees and present them in an array of 21
business storefront windows. This year, Rowdy the
Rooster showed up to motivate the little Elves,
Vineland High School Band played Christmas music
down Landis Avenue, and Santa gave Christmas
cheer to all.
A contest was also part of the project, and each
school's tree will be judged based on several criteria.
Prizes will be awarded to the winners.
We would like to thank WalMart and the Youth
Alliance for helping us in coordinating the donation
of more pre-lit Christmas trees, said John Procopio.
The support of the Vineland Board of Education, as
well as contributions and providing transportation
was important to the success of this project.
We are also very grateful for the assistance of the
Vineland Downtown Improvement District (VDID)
as well as all the participating businesses for helping

Bizarre Election Season
Who is on first base? No, Im not talk-
ing about Mike Trout. What I am asking
concerns what is happening with the
Vineland municipal election. There were
five citizens running for the mayors slot
and 18 people running for five city council
seats. In order for a winner to be declared
for the mayoral seat, a person must
receive 50 percent of the votes plus one.
In order for a city council to be formed in
completion, the top two candidates must
also receive 50 percent plus one vote. If
that happens, the next three candidates in
line will become city council members. In
many past elections in Vineland, there
have been run-off elections approximately
one month after the first one.
In his election season, things got a little
bizarre. First of all, the election was
moved six months forward to the
November general election date. This
seemed like a good idea. More people
would vote and the city would save money
by not having a separate election in the
spring. This would seem to make logical
sense to most people.
The general election was held on
November 6. The run-off election was
scheduled for December 4, which is three
weeks before Christmas. So the theory of a
large voter turnout would obviously
diminish with the inclusion of a runoff
because of the closeness of Christmas day.
Now, due to Hurricane Sandy, Lt.
Governor Kim Guadagno issued a direc-
tive to extend the certification deadline to
November 21 which effected a change for
the run-off date to December 18. This is
due to the fact that she wants to extend
the right to vote to all people that were
adversely affected by the hurricane. This
is a statewide mandate that affects all 21
counties. We were extremely fortunate in
Vineland and did not incur the full wrath
of Hurricane Sandy. We got just a glancing
blow. Vineland should have been exempt-
ed from this directive.
By changing the voting day to
December 18 (one week before
Christmas), I would suggest that polling
places be changed to all department stores
(Boscov's, Sears, Wal-Mart, etc.), because
this is where most people will be located
as they shop for Christmas gifts for family
and friends. The turnout on December 18
will probably be one of the lowest in
recent history.
By the way, I would suggest that city
council pass a resolution (amend the
Faulkner Act, if necessary), and do away
with the run-off election. All we need is
for people to go to the polls just one time
and the candidate that receives the most
votes for mayor wins the race. The top
five vote getters in the city council race
will also win seats on council. I say one
and done.

Bay Atlantic FCU Promotes
Marino to CEO
The Board of Directors at Bay Atlantic Federal
Credit Union recently promoted Gail Marino to
CEO/President.
Marino has over 24 years of service to the credit
union, starting her career as a teller. She has served
in numerous positions over the years including Loan
Officer, Collection Officer, Member Service Supervisor,
Branch Manager, Bank Secrecy Officer and most
recently Vice President of Business Development.
Marino replaces outgoing CEO/President, Carol
Muessig, who is retiring in January 2013.
As VP of Business Development, Marino was
instrumental in expanding Bay Atlantics field of
membership into Millville and worked to establish
the branch located at 600 N. Second Street. She initiated the BAFCU youth pro-
grams, Money U, an interactive online financial literacy course, and organized the
first Reality Fair at Pineland Learning Center. She received her Marketing
Certification for 2012 from the NJ Credit Union League and is currently serving as
the president of the Southern Chapter of the League. Marino also is a committee
member of the NJCUL Shared Branching Marketing Committee and actively partici-
pates in fundraising for Childrens Miracle Network at CHOP.

Captain. As a member of the Vineland Rotary Club since 2005, she serves on the
Board of Directors as the club secretary since 2006. Marino was honored in March
as a 2012 Hometown Hero by The Grapevine.
CompleteCare Doctor
Continues Family Tradition
You could say that Ylbe Franco-Palacios was
born to be a doctor. Her mother is an OB/GYN
in her home country of Paraguay, and while Dr.
Franco and all of her siblings are medical doc-
tors, only she decided to follow in her mothers
footsteps and focus on womens health. Now,
after spending years as an OB/GYN resident at
Wayne State University/ Detroit Medical Center,
Hutzel Hospital, Dr. Franco is bringing her fami-
ly tradition of medicine to the CompleteCare
Health Networks Womens Health Team.
Franco graduated from the Universidad
Nacional de Asuncion in Paraguay where she
earned her Medical degree in 2004. She is a
member of the American Congress of
Obstetricians and Gynecologists as well as a
Junior Fellow, American Association of Gynecologic Laparoscopist.
As a woman, I have always felt a connection with my patients. I can understand
their difficulties, said Dr. Franco, who also added that she is particularly looking for-
ward to providing care for CompleteCares patients. Im looking forward to continu-
ing to grow as a professional while also giving my best to the community. I enjoy
making a difference in peoples lives, and CompleteCare gives me the best opportu-
nity to do just that.
Franco will be seeing patients at all of CompleteCares Womens Health locations
in Cumberland County, including CompleteCare Womens Health Professionals at 484
South Brewster Avenue in Vineland, 105 Manheim Avenue, Suite 7 in Bridgeton and
CompleteCare Medical & Dental Professionals at 1200 North High Street in Millville.
She will also see patients at South Jersey Healthcares Regional Medical Center.
We are so happy to have Dr. Franco as a member of our team, said Dr. Cheryl
Bettigole, Chief Medical Officer at CompleteCare. Not only is her background and
experience impressive, but her warm and friendly demeanor make her a joy to work
with. I know that her patients will feel the same.
Franco is fluent in both English and Spanish and will see patients regardless of
whether or not they have insurance.

OLMA Alumna Shares Her Journey
Linda Grize, a graduate of Our Lady of
Mercy Academy, returned to the school to
share her journey of becoming a pharma-
cist with the current students. Praising the
Academy for preparing her for the academ-
ic rigors of college, Grize shared valuable
advice with the student body. She urged
them to make the most out of any oppor-
tunities that presented themselves and to
be persistent, prepared and hard working.
The students enjoyed her talk, especially
senior Giuliana Campo, who aspires to be
a Pharmacist and study at The University
of the Sciences, where Grize attended.

Mosaic/Found Art Project Shows Youth Creativity
The young people involved with the Boys & Girls Club of Vineland get a
chance to show their creativity in various projects coordinated throughout the
year. For instance, a current project funded by the Cumberland County Cultural &
Heritage Commission/NJ State Council on the Arts is a found art/mosaic proj-
ect. The members found glass, tiles, beads and more to help create a colorful
butterfly mosaic in the Club's nearby Community Garden.

Local Groups Donate For Hurricane Sandy Victims
On November 19, members of the Vineland Sicilian-American Club and employ-
ees of Premier Orthopaedic Associates loaded two vehicles filled with donated
food, clothes and toiletries in an effort to help victims of Hurricane Sandy. Upon
receiving request for assistance, Premier employees, club members and other
local businesses and residents collected monetary donations, non-perishable
food, cooking supplies and clothing to donate to families impacted by the storm.
Sicilian-American Club Membership Chairman and Premier employee
Vincenzo Lombardo said, Our members are very concerned for the families who
have suffered from this storm. We wanted to help in some way and the employ-
ees at Premier Orthopaedic Associates, along with other private members of the
community, chipped in to help. After seeing the devastation in the area, we know
every little bit helps.
Just about $1,000 was collected for the purchase of non-perishable foods,
including canned goods, pasta and cereal, all of which were donated. Donors
also purchased new blankets and toiletries like toothpaste and deodorant to help
victims of the storm.

NJ Lottery Head Tours Vineland Veterans Home
Carole Hedinger, executive
director of the New Jersey
Lottery, joined Raymond
Zawacki, the Deputy
Commissioner for Veterans
Affairs in New Jerseys
Department of Military and
Veterans Affairs, for a tour of
the Veterans Memorial Home
in Vineland and met with many
of the homes residents.
The NJ Lottery contributes
financial support to educational programs and to state-sponsored institutions,
including the operation of the three veterans homes in New Jersey run by the
Department of Military and Veterans Affairs. The Veterans Memorial Home-
Vineland is the states longest running facility, having opened in 1899. It has pro-
vided residential and long-term care to New Jersey veterans of every war and
armed conflict since the War of 1812. This state-of-the- art nursing home was
extensively rebuilt in 2005 and serves 300 residents. It also has a wing dedicat-
ed to independent livinga first for a state veterans home in New Jersey.
Hedinger and Zawacki toured the accommodations and comprehensive med-
ical care facilities that are available to veterans at the home.
The financial support provided by Lottery-generated revenue is vital to the
operation of all of our veterans homes and our mission to ensure every New
Jersey veteran receives the proper care they deserve, said Zawacki.
We at the New Jersey Lottery recognize and appreciate the extensive services
and exceptional care that New Jersey veterans who so honorably served our
country now receive through our states veterans homes, said Hedinger. It is
gratifying to know that revenue generated through the sale of lottery tickets
helps New Jerseys veterans homes provide them with the services and care they
have earned and deserve.

NAP Deadline Extended
USDA Farm Service Agency (FSA)
County Executive Director Angela J
Andreoli, reminds producers that they have
until Thursday, December 20, 2012, to pur-
chase coverage through the Noninsurable
Crop Disaster Assistance Program (NAP)
for apples, apricots, blueberries, caneber-
ries, cherries, cranberries, grapes, honey,
nectarines, onions, peaches, pears, plums,
scallions and shallots. The sales closing
date is normally November 20 for these
crops; however, due to the recent storms
the deadline has been extended.
NAP provides financial assistance to
producers of noninsurable crops when low
yields, loss of inventory or prevented plant-
ing occur due to normal disasters.
Purchasing a crop insurance policy is
an easy way for producers to mitigate risk,
said Andreoli. The past few years have
shown that natural disasters can severely
impact an otherwise successful operation.
In order to meet eligibility requirements
for NAP, crops must be noninsurable, com-
mercially-produced agricultural commodi-
ty crops for which the catastrophic risk
protection level of crop insurance is not
available. If the Risk Management Agency
(RMA) offers coverage for a crop in the
county, then NAP coverage is not available
for that crop.
In the event of a natural disaster, NAP
covers the amount of loss greater than 50
percent of the expected production based
on the approved yield and reported
acreage.
Eligible producers can apply for cover-
age using form CCC-471, Application for
Coverage. Producers must file the applica-
tion and service fee by the December 20
deadline. The service fee is the lesser of
$250 per crop or $750 per producer per
administrative county, not to exceed a total
of $1,875 for a producer with farming inter-
ests in multiple counties.
For more information on sales closing
dates and NAP, contact the FSA Office at
856-205-1225, ext. 2.
$2.25 Million for Farmland
Preservation Projects in
County
The Garden State Preservation Trust
(GSPT) recently approved a request for
$2.25 million to help Cumberland County
and towns to preserve farmland and to fur-
ther New Jerseys farmland preservation
efforts, Agriculture Secretary Douglas H.
Fisher announced.
Farmland is the foundation for agricul-
ture and for so many of the benefits
Cumberland Countys farms have to offer
useverything from opportunities to enjoy
fresh, local produce and farm experiences,
to rural and open landscapes that keep our
communities green and growing, said
Secretary Fisher.
The State Agriculture Development
Committee (SADC), which administers
New Jerseys Farmland Preservation
Program, made the request that includes
the following funding breakdown for
Cumberland County:
County Planning Incentive Grant
Program
Cumberland County, $1 million
Municipal Planning Incentive Grant
Program
Hopewell Township, $750,000
Upper Deerfield Township, $500,000
The request was part of a $79.5 million
funding request for farmland preservation
projects statewide. It will be forwarded to
the Legislature for approval of appropria-
tion bills, which must be signed by the
Governor.
The request will be forwarded to the
Legislature for approval of appropriation
bills, which must be signed by the
Governor. All actions will take effect at the
expiration of the statutory period for the
Governors review and consideration of the
meeting minutes.
New Jerseys Farmland Preservation
Program is critical to supporting our agri-
culture industry and way of life in
Cumberland County, said Tom Gilbert,
chairman of NJ Keep It Green. This fund-
ing, made possible by the 2009 bond refer-
endum, will continue the States strong
commitment to preserving family farms to
protect our quality of life and provide local,
Jersey Fresh food for decades to come.
The SADC administers New Jerseys
Farmland Preservation Program, directly
preserving farmland and providing grants
to counties, municipalities and nonprofits
to assist them in preserving farmland. To
date, more than 2,100 farms covering more
than 200,000 acres have been preserved
statewide under the program.

hree full-time businesses are being
added to the roster of Landis
MarketPlacedowntown Vinelands
public market, located at 631 E. Landis Ave.
All three businesses will be located on the
upper level of the two-level market.
With the holiday season here, we think of
the opening ritual that we just went through
turkey dinner on Thanksgiving, football before
and after that turkey dinnerand parades
after the turkey dinner and football. When
you think of parades, you think of it taking
place down the main street of the city. That is
a seasonal reminder to me as to why down-
towns are so important to cities and why
they need to be preserved and revitalized.
I have written in this column before
about why cities need downtowns as eco-
nomic and social centers of gravity, but I
want to stress it again.
What would a city be without a vibrant
downtown? What if you had highways lined
with malls, shopping centers, and big-box
stores on both sides of the city, but nothing
in between, except some residences? It
would be like a human being with hands,
arms, legs, feet, and a headbut no heart.
The downtown is the heart of a city. It
is what gives the city its personality and
character. The smaller stores and shops, the
restaurants and other eateries, the theaters
and gathering places all contribute to the
uniqueness of each downtown area.
Between the malls, shopping centers, and
big-box storesall of which vary little in
appearance and character from city to city
you have the part of the city that defines its
character. When that dies, so does the city.
When malls first were all the rage and a
great amount of effort was spent on recruit-
ing businesses for them, it had a drastic and,
most likely unforeseen effect on downtown
areas. Rather than providing an alternative
to downtown shoppingwith a wide variety
of stores and extended shopping hoursthe
development of malls helped to decimate
downtowns. The smaller stores, with their
personalized service, closed down in the
face of competition from the larger mall out-
lets with less personalized service but larger
inventories. Efforts to redo downtowns as
centers for offices and professional firms
largely failed because of the nine-to-five
nature of those businesses. With nothing to
attract people evenings and weekends, that
idea was not enough of a revitalizing tool.
It became obvious to many after a while,
even to some of the consulting firms that
had built up the malls, that the pendulum
had swung too far.
Main Street organizations across the
country have played a large role in making a
course correction to revitalize downtowns
and establish a better balance. The intention
of these revitalization programs has not
necessarily been to have downtowns com-
pete head-to-head with malls but to enable
them to exist and thrive alongside malls,
shopping centers, and big box stores.
Adjusting store hours to consumer habits
and better merchandizing methods were
part of this mix. This was in addition to hav-
ing downtowns offer goods and services
that you could not get elsewhere or online.
This strategy has paid off in downtowns
across the country and has contributed to
the success of the Main Street program
locally and nationally.
Yes, the malls, shopping centers, and big
box stores have provided an economic boon
to many areas, including ours. The down-
town, however, is where the true character
of the city ispersonalized service, a meet-
ing place for friends, a place to hold events,
festivalsand parades, like the one we had
this past Saturday. So, at this time when the
soul of the season is on our minds and in
our hearts, remember where the soul and
heart of the city is.
***
I want to thank everyone who helped out
with this years Holiday Parade. This is a
major undertaking with Main Street Vineland
volunteers and staff working with the City of
Vineland to make for an enjoyable, festive
event. Months of planning and organization
went into making it the best it could be. The
many people who participated in this
processthe planners, the additional volun-
teers who worked on parade night to make the
event run smoothly, and the participants who
made up the paradedeserve our thanks.
***
During the holiday shopping season,
make downtown Vineland your destination
for buying that special gift. Save money on
gasoline, avoid the long lines at the malls
and shopping centers, and enjoy plenty of
entertainment that we have right in town. I

Vintage Vineland { VINCE FARINACCIO }
Resort Run-in
Charles K. Landis Sea Isle City dealings managed to
get him in hot water with his sister and a colleague.
I
ts true that a lawsuit filed by
Charles K. Landiss sister Matilda
against her brother and his former
clerk, John Burk, ended in dismissal.
However, its attempt to annul a March
1881 agreement promising Burk $40,000 in
Sea Isle Improvement Company stock and
ownership of 40 lots in the resort, did
manage to unearth some skeletons lan-
guishing in the Landis closet.
The attempt to convince the judge the
Sea Isle project belonged to Matilda failed,
the transparency of the scheme provoking
an annoyance clearly evident in the case
record published in Central Reporter:
Cases, Courts of Last Resort, New York,
New Jersey: Although the suit is ostensi-
bly against Landis as well as Burk, it is not
only thoroughly amicable so far as the for-
mer is concerned, but it manifestly is in
fact his suit. It is impossible not to con-
clude, from the reading of the testimony,
that the enterprise of buying Ludlams
Island and establishing there a seaside city
was Landiss and not the complainants.
Burk, who was fired by Landis in May
1881, provided testimony that proved dev-
astating to Matildas case. Landis had
argued that Matildas ownership of the Sea
Isle project was proof of a recent plan to
give his father, mother and sister the ben-
efit of his property to the exclusion of his
wife, whom he had divorced immediately
prior to launching the Sea Isle venture in
1879 despite a series of unpaid debts he
bemoaned in diary entries at the time.
Burk, however, claimed Landis distribu-
tion of his assets was, in fact, done to put
the property out of the reach of Landiss
creditors.
The court found credibility in Burks
accusations, citing the fact that, in
February 1879, Landis conveyed parts of
his property by voluntary conveyances to
his father and motherand to the com-
plainant a very large amount of his real
estate, for the expressed consideration of
over $100,000, concluding that it would
seem that this arrangement had reference
to something else than any claim his wife
might make, seeing that there was, as he
testifies, an antenuptial agreement
between them
The most convincing evidence that the
Sea Isle enterprise belonged to Landis and
not Matilda, came in the form of a previ-
ous suit brought against Landis, Burk,
Matilda and the Sea Isle Improvement
Company by Henry Whelan, an associate
of Vinelands founder. According to that
case, Landis, without notifying his sister
of his plans, promised Whelan a con-
veyance of $100,000 in stocks and entitle-
ment to half of the island. That case
awarded Whelan half the island and clear-
ly demonstrated that Landis exercised
the most absolute and complete control
over [the deal].
But Matildas lawsuit wasnt really an
attempt to retain stocks and property
promised to Burk. As Jeffrey M. Dorwart s
book Cape May County, New Jersey: The
Making of an American Resort Community,
notes, The disenchantment with Burk
arose less from the alleged theft of proper-
ties than from Burks development of a
competing barrier island community on
Five Mile Beach to the south.
The author reports that several weeks
before he was fired by Landis, the clerk
had established the Holly Beach
Improvement Company. His partners
included Dr. Aaron Andrew of Vineland.
Hiring William H. Bright to run his real
estate office, Burk soon turned the Holly
Beach location into a vibrant resort com-
munity that even boasted some former
Vinelanders as permanent residents.
By the time Matildas lawsuit was dis-
missed in 1886, developers like Burk and
Landis former associate Philip P. Baker,
had transformed all the barrier islands
except Avalon into vital seashore commu-
nities that provided competition to Sea
Isle. Baker, who was instrumental in estab-
lishing Wildwood, even earned consider-
able attention when he hosted President
Benjamin Harrison at his seaside resort.
These are certainly all impressive
accomplishments, but lest we forget the
motivation behind them all, well let
Dorwart have the final word: All the barri-
er island resorts, including the quasi-utopi-
an experiments on Ocean City and Sea Isle
City, were founded as business ventures by
investment companies formed to sell
shares and develop property. The first per-
manent residents of the islands reflected
the business origins and formed an inner
core of builders, real estate dealers, shop-
keepers, and hotel and boardinghouse pro-
prietors. I

Delsea Teachers Plan Travel Opportunities
Delsea Regional High School Foreign Language teacher, Mrs. Jessica Ebinger
with the assistance of fellow Foreign Language teachers, Mrs. Angela Romeo,
Mrs. Michele Hill and Mrs. Heidi Salerno are planning a trip to Italy during the
summer of 2014. They will travel to Italy from June 23 to July 2, 2014, visiting
cities such as Venice, Florence, and Rome along with other excursions to Verona,
Sorrento, Assisi and Pisa. Participants will have an opportunity to see attractions
such as the Leaning Tower of Pisa, the Vatican, the Trevi Fountain, and Pompeii.
A tour guide will also accompany the group giving historical background on all
the sites.
In June of 2012, Delsea Regional High School students took a fun-filled adventure trip to
Costa Rica, partaking in new experiences and practicing their Spanish. Pictured here,

Students See Demo of
Utility Bucket Truck
The Vineland Municipal Electric
Utility (VMEU) celebrated public power
week recently, along with more than
2,000 other electric utilities that col-
lectively provide electricity on a not-
for-profit basis to 46 million
Americans, according to Lisa Lucena
of VMEU.
As part of the activities, VMEU visit-
ed local area schools and provided
third grade students with a demonstra-
tion on electrical safety and the func-
tions of a line bucket truck.
One of the schools visited was
Barse Elementary School, where
VMEU employees Jeffrey Lawrence
and Marc Travaglione provided stu-
dents with a first-hand look at the
functions of a line bucket truck.
VMEU workers demonstrate the line buck-
et truck for Barse Elementary third
graders.
Reutter Students Get Education from Fire Chief
{ By: Kayla Hayden and Jacob Worley }
We have been learning about smoke
jumpers in Miss Paolellas and Mrs.
Gillespies fifth grade Read 180 classes.
Mr. Baldosaro, the Fire Chief of Malaga,
came to our class to speak with us
about what firefighters and smoke
jumpers do. They work hard to put out
wildfires, so people, animals, and
homes are safe.
He showed us pictures of smoke
jumpers parachuting out of planes into
fire zones near burning wildfires. He
told us about different ways they fight
fires. One way was to create a fire line
where the firefighters dig ditches. To
make the fire lines, jumpers cut down
trees and brush.
The firefighters often use a tool
called the Pulaski axe to accomplish this task. The dirt ditch divides the region of
the fire from the rest of the forest. When the fire reaches the ditches, there is
nothing to burn, so the fire stops spreading.
Smoke jumpers parachute out of planes into fire zones. From there, they work
to stop the fires. Special planes drop large amounts of water onto the fire, which
help the firefighters on the ground.
During the visit, Chief Baldosaro brought in helmets and jackets for us to look
at and try on. Some of it was really heavy! We really appreciated Chief Baldosaro
visiting our classes.
Going On A Bear Hunt
Ms. Kristen Barbers four-year-old class
of baby bears, armed with flash lights,
searched the halls and classrooms of
Edgarton Christian Academy looking for
their stuffed animal bears. Determined
Bear Hunters included Brianna Deal, 4, of
Williamstown and Vincent Allonardo, 5,
from Newfield (both pictured here). The
classroom of stuffed animal bears was
found picnicking in the cafeteria. It was a
joyful reunion full of laughter and snacks.

Vineland Teachers Assist Ocean City Residents
Vineland school teachers
responded to the call from
OCNJCARE for volunteers in
the wake of Hurricane Sandy.
They went door to door dur-
ing a recent hiatus assessing
the needs of Ocean City resi-
dents and then reported
back to the citizen organiza-
tion that is spearheading
relief efforts in the communi-
ty in cooperation with the
City, Chamber of Commerce
and many partner organiza-
tions. Here, teacher Maritza
Gonzalez translates a phone
call from a Latino resident
reporting the information to
Taija Young and James Dennis. Other Vineland school teachers who assisted
OCNJCARE included Jessica Albertson, Tania Kidd, Jennifer Lapsley, Jamie

Auditions
The Off Broad Street Players have
announced a substitution for their 2013
Season Opener. In place of How to
Succeed in Business Without Really
Trying, the Off Broad Street Players have
decided to produce the musical Damn
Yankees to pay homage to Millville native
Mike Trout for his recent achievement as
Rookie of the Year for the American
League of baseball.
Director John T. Stephan is seeking a
cast of approximately 30 actors and
actresses aged 15 and up. Auditionees
should come prepared with 32 bars of
music from any other Broadway musical
other than Damn Yankees. Resumes and
headshots are strongly recommended.
Auditions will be held December 2 at
4 p.m. and December 3 at 7:30 p.m.
Callbacks will be held on December 6
starting at 7 p.m. All auditions and call-
backs will be held at Trinity United
Methodist Church, 14 Fayette Street,
Bridgeton, NJ.
The production will run February 15,
16, 17, 21, 22, 23, and 24. All those inter-
ested in auditioning must be available for
all performances; no understudies will be
used for this production.
If you have any questions, comments,
or concerns, contact the Director of
Public Relations, Jason D. Smith at
jsmith@obsp.org.

Protect Yourself From Fraud
After Hurricane Sandy
Office of Consumer Protection cautions
residents to protect themselves from fraud
after Hurricane Sandy. As many Garden
State residents work to recover from
Hurricane Sandy, local, state and federal
officials are warning of a danger lurking
around the cornerphony building con-
tractors and other scam artists could soon
appear in your community attempting to
take advantage of your vulnerability as a
disaster survivor. There are a few simple
steps that you can take to make sure
youre dealing with an honest person.
Your first and best defense is to know the
most common post-disaster fraud prac-
tices, such as:
Phony Housing Inspectors: If your
homes damage is visible from the street,
you may be especially vulnerable to the
phony housing inspector who claims to
represent FEMA or the U.S. Small
Business Administration (SBA).
You should:
Ask to see the inspectors identifica-
tion badge if he or she does not offer to
show it. A FEMA or SBA shirt or jacket is
not proof of someones affiliation with the
government. All federal employees and
contractors carry official, laminated photo
identification.
Avoid giving bank account numbers
to an inspector claiming to be affiliated
with the federal government. FEMA
inspectors never require banking informa-
tion.
Understand that FEMA housing
inspectors verify damage, but do not hire
or endorse specific contractors to fix
homes or recommend repairs. They also
do not determine cost estimates.
Fraudulent Building Contractors:
Damage visible from the street can also
bring out sham contractors who visit your
home offering to begin work immediately.
They take your money and disappear,
leaving behind unfinished work and
unsafe homes.
Before hiring any contractor, check
with the New Jersey Division of
Consumer Affairs at: 800-242-5846 to
make sure the contractor is registered.
Ask for a copy of the contractors liability
insurance and verify that the policy is
valid. All contracts should be in writing,
and reviewed before being signed.
Fake Offers of State or Federal Aid: If
someone claiming to be from FEMA or
the state visits, calls or emails you asking
for your Social Security number, bank
account number or other sensitive infor-
mation, beware. That information could
be sold to identity thieves or used to
defraud you. A twist on this scam is the
phone or in-person solicitor who promises
to speed up the insurance, disaster assis-
tance or building-permit process. Then
there are scam artists who promise you a
disaster grant and ask for large cash
deposits or advance payments in full.
Price Gouging: Excessive price
increases are illegal. Check with the New
Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs at
www.NJConsumerAffairs.gov or call 800-
242-5846 if you suspect prices are too high.
Charity Scams: Before donating, be
sure to investigate to make sure the organ-
ization asking for donations is registered
to solicit in New Jersey. Ask how the
money will be used.
For other questions, New Jersey resi-
dents can contact the New Jersey Division
of Consumer Affairs office at
www.NJConsumerAffairs.gov or by call-
ing 800-242-5846. I
