Its the most wonderful time of the year! On behalf of our City of Romulus elected officials, the staff of the Romulus Senior Center, Chore Services and Meals on Wheels, we wish all Romulus seniors a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! The annual Holiday Gala luncheon is scheduled for 11 a.m. Tuesday, December 18, at the Romulus Senior Center. There will be a full Christmas luncheon menu, music, dancing and gifts. Admission is just $4.50 per person. We hope you will join us. If you are interested in attending, place contact the Senior Center at (734) 955-4120.

The Romulus seniors extend a heartfelt thank you to all of the elected officials, city employees and business people that donated gifts to our Holiday Gala and throughout the year. Also, thank you to the Greater Romulus Chamber of Commerce and to Scott Daugherty, sales consultant at Jack Demmer Ford, for donating money, gifts and raffles during Senior Center events. In the photo, Senior Center Director Rose Swidan accepts $300 in gift cards from Scott that were presented to grateful seniors during the Thanksgiving luncheon in November.

Town! Santa Claus is Coming to Town!


A long-time community tradition continues Friday, December 7, when Romulus residents come together to light the official Christmas tree and welcome Santa Claus to the city. Everyone is invited to Romulus Historical Park at 11120 Hunt Street for the festivities, which get under way at 6 p.m. There will be Christmas carols. Santa Claus will arrive by fire truck and will join attendees in the lighting of the official city Christmas tree. Mayor Alan Lambert will present Santa with a key to the city. The night continues at Progressive Hall at 11580 Ozga Road. Santa will meet with children. There will be free refreshments. Photos with Santa will be available for $3 each the only cost of the evening. The festivities are possible thanks to the sponsorship of local businesses and organization and the volunteerism of community members under the leadership of the Romulus Downtown Development Authority (DDA).

Seniors Snow Removal

Chore servicemen will work hard to remove snow for all seniors on the Chore service list. Please be patient. Those with restrictions and medical problems should stay in their homes. Please leave salt by your door. After they remove your snow, they will salt your driveway. Due to budget constraints, shoveling will not take place every day it snows. Hours will be limited.

Game Days & Exercise Class


Members of the Romulus Senior Center can play games and exercise throughout the week: Bingo is played at noon Mondays and Wednesdays. Bunco is played at noon Tuesdays. Pinochle and other games are played during Wednesday Fun Days. Game Day is scheduled for noon Thursdays. Pokeno is played at noon Fridays. A new stress-free chair exercise class has been added to the Thursday schedule, starting at 9:30 a.m. To register, call the Senior Center at (734) 955-4120.

Ask the Lawyer


The Romulus Senior Center sends a holiday thank you to attorney Steven Robinson of Oakley and Robinson PLLC for providing free legal advice to seniors throughout the year. Romulus seniors enjoyed the annual Thanksgiving Luncheon on November 20. Thank you to the City of Romulus and Wayne County officials and other volunteers who helped serve the delicious meal. Seniors also enjoyed music and winning prizes. Special thanks to the Romulus High School culinary arts class, under the direction of Chef Walter Banks, for providing 50 pies for the meal.

Closed for the Day


The Romulus Senior Center will be closed Friday, Dec. 21, which is an unpaid city furlough day. The center will be closed Monday, Dec. 24 for Christmas Eve; Tuesday, Dec. 25, for Christmas Day; Monday, Dec. 31, for New Years Eve; and Tuesday, Jan. 1, for New Years Day.

Party Rooms for Rent


The Romulus Senior Center is a great place to celebrate birthdays, baby showers, family reunions and wedding receptions. The beautiful banquet halls and facilities at the Senior Center are available for rent at very affordable rates. There are rooms that can hold up to 120 people and they are available any day of the week. Bring your own caterer or make arrangements to use the Senior Center kitchen. Caregiver Support Group Meetings


If you have ever wished you had an understanding person with whom to speak, know that you are not alone. A monthly Caregiver Support Group provides helpful information and assistance, including information on Alzheimers and dementia care. The next meeting is scheduled for 10 a.m. to noon Thursday, Dec. 20, in the Board Room of the Romulus Senior Center, 36525 Bibbins. Meetings are usually the fourth Wednesday of the month, but is on a Thursday in December. The group is provided by the Wayne Metropolitan Community Action Agency. There is no charge. In order for the family caregiver to attend, either the caregiver or the care recipient must be at least 60 years old. Those attending for the first time are asked to call to verify the date and time as the schedule is subject to change. For more information, contact Nancy Coman at (734) 955-6752, Extension 228. Individual counseling is also available.

Need Food?
Low-income residents are eligible for free commodities each month at the Romulus Senior Center. A variety of food is provided by The Emergency Food Assistance Program of Wayne County Senior Services. This months food distribution begins at 9:30 a.m. Dec. 20. Romulus Senior Director Rose Swidan encourages anyone in need of food any time to contact the center at (734) 955-4120.
