FRIENDS of Little Sutton and
Ellesmere Port railway stations
have been awarded thriving
certiicates at the Britain in Bloom
- Its Your Neighbourhood Awards.
Its Your Neighbourhood - a
Britain in Bloom Campaign,
organised by the Royal
Horticultural Society is the non
competitive part of North West
in Bloom, looks to welcome and
recognise groups taking the
irst steps towards community
regeneration.
Entries are visited by
environmental and horticultural in
Bloom experts during the summer,
who provide valuable feedback and
helpful advice on how to develop
current activities and encourage on-going
improvements.
This years North West In Bloom initiative
attracted over 400 entries from across
the North West with each project being
assessed at dierent levels establishing,
improving, developing, thriving and
outstanding.
In the Ellesmere Port area the work
at to improve stations continues - with
volunteers at Overpool now hoping to
brighten up their station too.
Local councillor, Ben Powell, said: The
Friends only adopted Little Sutton Station
one year ago so its fantastic to be judged
as Thriving already and really is testament
to the hard work that volunteers from the
community have put in.
Im also delighted to see that the
Ellesmere Port Friends maintained their
thriving award for another year despite
the summers wet conditions.
We have many people who give up their
town for community beneit in Ellesmere
Port and the Friends are always looking for
new people. We look forward to entering
the competition next year.
To enter the neighbourhood competition of
North West In Bloom the local community
group must show that they are hands on
and involved in community gardening,
from and engaging with the community,
volunteer led, beneitting the community,
sustainable over time and responsible for
work.
Sally Ralston, Corporate Social
Responsibility Manager, Merseyrail
commented: Friends of Ellesmere Port
Station have led the way in transforming
their Station and the Little Sutton Friends
are quickly catching up well done to
both groups on their In Bloom certiicates.
Merseyrail recognise the dierence that
station adoption groups make and we look
forward to continuing to work together.
Volunteers are always welcome at
Ellesmere Port, Little Sutton and Overpool

HOLLY bushes planted at Little Sutton
Station to commemorate men from the area
who went to war have been replanted at a
special ceremony.
Friends of Little Sutton Station have been
researching its history and uncovered the
saga of the war memorial holly trees, which
is believed to have begun in 1916.
Local men went o to war from Little
Sutton Station and it is believed that holly
bushes were irst planted as a tribute to
those from the area who fought so bravely
in the First World War.
However in the 1990s Railtrack
refurbished the station and dug out
the old Holly trees - upsetting the local
community. Local residents John Docherty,
Bob McDonald and Janet Money worked
tirelessly to get memorial holly replanted at
the station and were successful in 1994.
Eighteen years on and the replacement
hollies have been dwarfed by trees and are
out of bounds by the track - prompting the
Friends to see if new holly could be planted
in a public place at the station.
Merseyrail has now provided a planter
on the station where the holly can be seen
by all who pass by, and just as they did in
1994 Burleydam Garden Centre are kindly
providing the new trees.
Local councillor, Angela Claydon, said:
The history of holly bushes at Little Sutton
Station, their long-standing signiicance
and the importance of them to the local
community is something I am delighted to
see commemorated.
The new holly will now be placed in
a more central location where it can
be seen by visitors and station users
and our dedication to those men who
fought and died in World War One can be
remembered.
The plants were dedicated and blessed by
Merseyrails Chaplain in a short ceremony
last month.

WINTER COLOUR
GARDENING BY JANET HEATH AA
DECEMBER is a quiet time in the R
garden but there are plants that will
lift the spirit by the beauty of the
form, foliage or owers. Berries on
trees and shrubs give Christmas cheer
and this year there has been a good
show.
I love the varieties of Cotoneaster with
their cheerful red berries. Cotoneaster
horizontalis has herring bone like stems that
grow at against walls. Red berries remain
on the stems for a while after the leaves
have dropped giving a lovely effect against
a fence or wall. Larger Cotoneasters such
a Cotoneaster frigidus Cornubia is a shrub
which is semi evergreen and has clusters of red
berries till the birds eat them in cold weather.
Cotoneaster lacteus is evergreen with arching
branches laden with red berries and looks
stunning as a specimen small tree in a lawn.
Most Cotoneasters have white owers in early
spring and their leaves colour well in autumn
plus the bonus of berries in winter so think
about having one in your garden.
Beautiful bark is a feature of winter and the
pale cream or white of silver birches is well
worth seeing against a dark background.
Other trees with beautiful bark are the Acers,
especially Acer griseum with peeling coppery
bark which is a good tree for a sheltered spot
in smaller gardens. Similar copper colour
comes from Prunus serrula bark which has
a smooth texture and polish to the bark that
the Acer griseum lacks. Snake bark Acers such
as Acer davidii (Snakebark Acer) and Acer
pensylvanicum (Striped maple) have green and
white striped bark.
Frost on plants looks fresh and sparkling on
Holly or Heuchera plants. Heucheras tend to
keep some of their foliage in winter making
them valuable perennials for year round
interest. The photo of Heuchera Rufes with
frosted leaves is beautiful picture on a crisp
sunny morning.
Continue to tidy up in the garden by cutting
down dead foliage and pruning overgrown
shrubs. Make sure plants like Hostas,
Rodgersias and Paeonies, with their large leaf
buds, have a mulch of well rotted manure over

MOVING IN TOGETHER
WITH mortgage rates low and the cost of
living going up the option to move in with
your partner is increasingly tempting for
many people.
You will have a chance to discuss with your
solicitor the history of your relationship, and
the details of your assets and those of your
partner.
Your solicitor will explain your rights. They
will highlight the circumstances where you or
your share of the home could be at risk and
will tell you what action is to consider taking
to avoid this.
Of course, a solicitor can only act for one
partner at a time. They are there to help
you ind the best way of safeguarding your
interests and your future.
This is especially important if you have
children. Many parents dont realise that
if they are not married only the mother
has automatic parental responsibility for
the child. A solicitor can help you make an
agreement to share parental responsibility
with your partner.
The law is currently changing so that if
you jointly register the birth, the father has
parental responsibility as well. You can check
with your solicitor to ind out whether this
applies to you.
Your solicitor can also explain what it means
for you and your partner if one or both of you
has children from a previous relationship, as
the law does not automatically give parental
responsibility to cohabiting partners.

Q. My daughter and I like to use good quality skin care products but we
have limited funds and lack of storage space so we were wondering
if there are any skin care products that we could share. Our skin
conditions are quite different, she is sixteen and is prone to breakouts
and Im forty six and need anti-ageing products! What can you
recommend?
A. As strange as it sounds with the right mix of skin care products,
you can take control of both breakouts and signs of aging - without
spending a fortune, saving you both money and bathroom space.
Unless your skin is extremely dry, you can both use a gentle,
water soluble cleanser and at night use a soft wash cloth
in conjunction with the cleanser to ensure that all traces
of makeup is thoroughly removed. You will both benet
from using a Beta-hydroxy acid exfoliator, (you will need
to look for salicylic acid on the ingredients label). And
of course, to protect both your skin and your daughters
skin from premature ageing you will both need a good
sunscreen so choose one that is non-pore clogging and
oil- free. For a full-regime of the products that you can
both use please visit the December newsletter page on
our website www.angelabartlett.co.uk
Q. I have recently returned from a cruise and I had a
course of very effective gure treatments which involved
hot sea clay with electrodes in them. I cant remember the
name of the treatment, but I would like to continue them
now that I am home.
A. I hope you had a good holiday and to return home
with a better gure than before your holiday is a real
achievement! The treatment you mentioned is, almost
without a doubt, Ionithermie (pronounced eye-on-
ee-thermee). Its a very effective treatment and best
results are seen when used in conjunction with a diet
and exercise programme. Two types of gentle, electrical
stimulation are employed in this treatment, one to tone
the muscle tissue and one to help active products to
penetrate the skin. The whole area is encased in thermal
sea clay with micronized algae, to tone and condition
the skin and the warmth from the sea clay speeding up
results. I would recommend a monthly treatment as a
maintenance plan and then a short concentrated course
prior to your next holiday to see the best results.
