A DESERT LAND Arabian Peninsula is mostly Hot and dry desert land___________________. Scorching temperatures_______ and lack of water _________make life difficult. Arabias location, physical features, and climate have shaped life in the region. A Crossroads Location
They had trading routes that were linking three continents that have passed through the region for thousands of years. Merchants carried goods for example they carried silk, spices, and gold along the trade routes. Then trade brought many people to Arabia that introduced products and ideas from around the world.

Physical Features
Arabias location has also shaped its physical features. The climate created a band of deserts across Arabia and northern Africa. Sand dunes can rise up to 800 feet high and it can also stretch for hundreds of miles. Arabias deserts have very limited amount of water because they arent permanent lakes or rivers. Even though deserts cover much of the interior Arabia, other landforms appear along the edges of peninsula.

Desert Climate
Arabia is one of the hottest, driest places in the world with blazing sun and clear skies the summer temperatures reach 100 F daily. It also makes it very challenging for the plants to survive. Just like plants have to adapt to life in Arabia, so too have people found ways to live there.

TWO WAYS OF LIFE Some people lived a nomadic life__, moving from _place______ to _place______. Others lived a __sedentary____, or __settled_________, life in ____towns_______________. Nomads The Nomads lived in tents and they raised farm animals like sheep, goats, and camels and the animals provided milk, meat, and skins for the tents. Membership in a tribe, a group of related people, was important to Nomads. Townspeople

While the nomads were moving around the desert other people settled in oases where they could farm. Most people in Arabia lived in towns like for example merchants and craftspeople lived in towns and worked with people in the caravan trade.

Trade Centers (p. 56-58!) The towns became centers of the trade for both nomads and townspeople. Most of the towns had a souk which is a market or bazaar. In a market, nomads traded animal products and desert herbs foe goods such as cooking supplies and clothing. Arabian towns were important stations on the trade routes linking India with Northeast Africa and the Mediterranean.
