Nursing Philosophy 2

Being a nurse is more than just a job, it is a commitment. When a person becomes a nurse there is a commitment to caring for and about ones patient to the best of ones ability. This includes putting your personal beliefs and opinions aside and making an effort to understand and respect those of your patient, and communicating both effectively and therapeutically. A nurse should always be passionate about his or her work and make each patient feel that he or she is truly present and engaged when in the room. In order to make a true connection with a patient, you need to be focused on them and them alone while performing an assessment or intervention. When a patient is speaking you should be actively listening, not letting your attention wander to other things. A nurse should be sure to assess what the patients goal is for their care, and what the reason for their visit is, as well as any cultural beliefs and customs that need to be considered when implementing an intervention. Being a nurse is also a commitment to continuous learning and change. Nursing practices and research are constantly changing, and as a nurse you need to keep up with the latest research in order to implement evidence based practice. Evidence based practice is based on up to date research in combination with the patients desires and decisions. This is extremely important to use as a nurse, in order to give patients the best possible care. As a nurse you have a commitment to being an advocate for your patient and helping them to receive the care that they need with the upmost dignity and respect for their opinions. I hope to be the kind of nurse that patients will remember fondly as someone who made a positive difference in their life. My commitment to develop a relationship of trust and understanding with my patient is very important to me, and it is my goal to utilize the concepts of beneficence and respect with each and every patient I encounter in my future career as a nurse.
