Flat Plate Solar Collector Applications
The typicaIat plate collector
panel used in solar water heating
is an insulated weatherproof
metal box containing a dark solar
absorber plate under one or more
transparent covers. The dark
absorber soaks up heat from
sunlight that passes through the
cover, and then gives the heat up
to a heat transferuidowing
past or through the absorber.
The main use of this technology is in residential buildings where the demand for hot
water has a large impact on energy bills. This generally means a situation with a large
family, or a situation in which the hot water demand is excessive due to frequent
laundry washing. Commercial applications include laundromats, car washes, military

SunMaxx Flat Plate collectors are extremely efficient at absorbing and retaining solar radiation
because they utilize the best flat plate technology available. Flat plate panels can be either
glazed or unglazed. Our panels come with a glass coating because it creates a greenhouse
effect which minimizes heat loss. This allows the panels to be effective in a wider range of tem-
peratures. SunMaxx collectors use tough tempered, low-iron glass, which is the best glazing
material on the market. These glass plates are extremely durable and have the highest trans-
missivity properties which allows more light into the collectors by reflecting less away. This
greatly increases the efficiency of the collectors.
The collectors not only retain heat due to the glassing, but also because of the fiberglass insula-
tion in the collectors. Fiberglass is a great insulator, but not as good as urethane or polyisocy-
anurate. These two substances, however, must be used very carefully, and if something goes
wrong with the collector (such as moisture leaks to the inside, or the glazing cracks), then these
substances often outgas themselves, leaving the collector inefficient. They are also not allowed
in fire-hazard areas because they give off toxic fumes when they burn. Therefore, the SunMaxx
collectors use fiberglass, which is a very durable and practical substance.
SunMaxx Flat Panel collectors also use the best available selective coating, black chrome on a
nickel base. The use of this material significantly reduces the loss of radiation. Test have
shown that black chrome is a very stable selective coating, which means that it remains effec-
tive over time, even at very high temperatures.
Now you understand how the SunMaxx liquid flat plate collector is designed to maximize the
absorption of solar radiation. From there, the solar radiation is converted into heat on the inner
all-copper absorber. The copper tubes attached to the absorber contain a liquid, either water or
a water antifreeze mix, which transports the heat to storage, either a solar tank or a water
heater. This process continues until the tank is hot for evening and morning use whenever
enough sun is available.
