he was always the outsider. She was ineptly tall and her face was homely at best. Her silence was the most awkward part of her. Anyone who attempted to befriend her failed miserably. Eventually, people just stopped noticing her. That is when she became the Watcher. She observed lives around her unfolding; cautionary tales of love mixed with heroic tales of moral aptitude. When she wasnt observing life, she was reading about it. She was quite content with blending into the background of her own mediocrity, until the man that talks to the trees approached her. Watcher girl, let me tell your for tune, he said with sly intentions. She responded, as always, with silence. O h y e s , t h a t s r i g h t , t h e Wa t c h e r g i r l s p e a k s n o words. No matter, I will keep your fortune and whisper it to the trees. Deafening silence. T h e b eautif ul will always be watched. Disb elief overc ame her. H ow dare he make such an inauspicious for tune? Homely, yes, but never beautiful; this was a fate she was not willing to watch

unfold. She poured over her books to find the antithesis to her eternal misfortunate. Then it came to her, as quickly as the flit ting of the wing s of a but ter fly, the rare blue butterfly. Stories and my tholog y surrounded the rare blue b u t te r f l y, w h o s e b l u e s r a n ge d f ro m a z u re to sap p hire , dep en ding on th e light of th e sun . A long time ago, a powerful empress captured the blue butter fly, only to crush its wings into a fine powder, which she wore around her eyes. The Empress beauty was legendar y. Being the Watcher, she knew exactly where to find blue butterfly. The metamorphosis was painless and as she emerged from her cocoon, she knew immediately that she was beautiful. She went straight to the man that talks to the trees, to break her silence with gloating . In her flut tering , sh e realize d som ething was w rong . H er legs were as thin needles, painful to walk. When she reached to open the door, the strain was back breaking. Not only was she as beautiful as the rare blue butterfly, she was as delicate; the slightest wind, the gentlest touch would result in her untimely demise. She was imprisoned by the fragility of her precarious beauty; always to be watched, never again the Watcher.

VANESSA POWELL

ver changing, fluid and fresh defines Vanessa Powells signature photographic style. Ever the observant photographer, Powell is a lover of basics, focusing on light, shadow and line. Raised in Alaska and more than accustomed to the short-lived days of sunlight, she embraces the quick changing lights of the Alaskan sky. Acknowledging it as friend rather than foe and with the keenest of eyes, Powell seeks out the deepest of darks and the brightest of lights. With a long-standing love for literature and art, writers such as Hans Chris tian A n dersen , The Brothers Grimm and Edgar Allan Poe, not to mention a profluent string of poet s, have continually fed inspiration to P o w e ll s v i si o n . T h e y h av e a d d e d to m y v i s u a l re p e r toire a n d sha p e d my w ay of s e ein g t h e w o rl d through my lens, says Powell. H er inh erent abilit y to create compatible comp ositions makes her photographs what they are: ethereal, bathed in soft light and echoing in poetic resonance. Using the outdoors as an artistic palette to compose her photographs, Powell uses the oddities of nature to build stories on. I believe strongly in the versatility of natural settings.

In her latest shoot Painted Desert, earthy tones are use d as a delic ate ba ckdrop, enabling Powell to utilis e natural surro un din g s to h e r likin g , c reatin g an array of photographic st yles. Photography like any art is a continued craf t, Powell remains close to her roots and true to her hear t and vision , exp re ssing th ere are few thing s in my life I value more than finding new ways to see. And with this determination in sight, we can expec t to see much more of this promising photographer.

hen we talk about fashion, its sometime really important to understand what we mean by that term. To get a greater un ders tan ding we have to look closely at the word. Perhaps we have used it so often that we have become totally used to it and its REAL meaning has been long forgotten. Think about makeup. Makeup is making up; it is creating something else, something new. You are making something up! No matter how natural and subtle our makeup is, no matter how little we add or change, h i g h li g h t o r c o v e r u p , i t i s c r e a t i n g s o m e thing fake and attempting to fool the people around you. Of course, that is not a bad thing! Yo u a re m a k i n g . Yo u a re c re a ti n g ; yo u a re changing the world, even in a ver y personal, small way. You are deciding how you want to ap p ear an d w hat yo u want oth er p e op le to see when they look at you:changing the world according to your whims. Lan Nguyen knows this. Not for her the subtl e , inv isib l e natural s t y l e of G is ell e o r Elle. She lets the world know that the wearer is in control. Whatever the shoot needs she's n ot afraid to go that ex tra s tep b eyon d th e n o r m a n d i n to t h e w o r l d o f w h a t i f ? T h e world of f antas y collide s with th e world of

fashion and greatness is born. The ordinar y and the everyday are drowned in gemstones, fake hair and sharp outlines like a pen drawing, exactly everything that you don't expect to find on a face. L an's makeup doesn' t just rearrange or adjust the same pieces: it creates a whole new set of rules! Where Lan shines is that point where the style takes over and the whole world is made u p . N ot j u s t sm o ot hin g ove r, a c ce nt uatin g and creating a face, she creates the character, the personality, the whole histor y of the i n di v i d u a l's u n i ve r s e . Fro m o u te r s p a c e to the inner-cit y, there is no limit or place that her range doesn't extend to. Whether she is dehumanising an droids in th e far f uture or bringing fantastic golden Klimt paintings to life, her skill and technical creativity extend to every situation. When you look into the essence of her work a n d h e r v a r i e d s t y l e , t h e t h i n g t h a t r e a ll y s t rike s yo u is h e r co m mit m e nt to o rigina lit y a n d creativit y. S h e wields th e p ower to c h a n g e a n d r e m a ke t h e w o r l d . S h e u n d e rstands that makeup is making up something n e w a n d that th e o nl y limit is ima ginatio n . Luckily for us, L an's imagination has no such limit!

hristina Kreital and Rikki Sandberg take a look at hair and they don't see bobs, perms or braids; they see possibilities. Monoliths rise o u t o f t h e h e a d . T h ey i n s p i r e a w e , t o w e r i n g ove r re g ula r h uma n s like ico n s of f uture religions not yet founded. Their designs look like they could appear in a modern ar t galler y or a big-budget science fiction movie. Yo u c a n' t o v e r s t a t e t h e g l a m o u r a n d t h e p u r e wow-factor of the hairstyles, adding presence and elegance like any artisan tailored piece, especially one that sticks up a meter into the sk y. Cat walk or sidewalk , th ey are g uarante e d to turn h ea ds and get a reaction. Normally, this sort of intense masterpiece would be limited to music videos and high fashion , but in this case the talent s behind t h e s e a m a zi n g c r e a t i o n s w e r e s t u d e n t s a t t h e annual Next Dimension Hair Show. O f co ur s e , to craf t su ch a n ex tra o rdina r y hairdo, it takes an ex traordinar y process. The tools required soun d like they c ame from a hardware store rather than a beaut y salon . A s well as the u s ua l b o b by p in s a n d clip s , t h e s e h aird o s u s e d ever y thing from chicken wire to wooden wreath rings oh, and a bicycle helmet. From unassuming, ordinary objects, works of art are born. As with the masquerade costumes and the powdered wigs that inspired them, the unnatural and ar tificial design of the hairpieces have a p ower f ul ef fe c t . T h e m o dels wearing th em are more than human. They have been transformed into objects with no practical function; objects of pure beauty, only existing to have an extreme effect on our senses. More than hair, more than fashion, these are myths.
