Task 4:

Here are some examples of the front cover of Kerrang! Magazines; All the Kerrang! Magazine covers follow the same layout and design. The black Kerrang! Header and the main image that dominates the frame appears in every magazine Having relatively the same layout just with different text and images gives the magazines a structure that people will know and recognise as Kerrang! Magazine

Here are some examples of Kerrang! Magazines contents pages: The colour scheme again is the same throughout these 3 different covers Yellow and black are the colours that are used which is an effective contrast, however, the yellow doesnt relate to the front cover image. Also one really effective thing about Kerrang! Magazine is the little pictures used to summarise whats on each page rather than just having loads of texts.

Here are some examples of Kerrang! Magazines articles: The images here also do follow a relatively similar colour scheme with the red and black Also in the majority of images the background is blank this is to keep the emphasis on the band and the story in hand.

This particular image shows that Kerrang! Magazine mainly is aimed towards men. We can tell this from this picture as it is just advertising male TShirts.

The one thing I really like about Kerrang! Magazine and I want to feature in my magazine is the wide range of knowledge they have on the bands in this genre. From this image from the Kerrang! Website you can see that Kerrang! Have information on all these different bands and can tell you when there next album is out, what songs they sing etc. This level of knowledge is something I want to portray in my magazine.

One reason why this magazine is not suitable for my final magazine is because it only really targets men, even though both genders buy the magazine the overall magazine is mainly targeted towards men. We can tell this from the colour schemes used as theyre mainly dark and masculine colours and the covers dont generally look feminine. Another reason why this might not be appropriate for my final magazine is because they only really target male bands and dont have as many covers dedicated to female artists.

Even though I really like the design of the front cover of Kerrang! The colours used are very dark and almost depressing whereas I would like my magazine to be more upbeat and bright. Because of this I will use brighter colours which will make the magazine look more user friendly.

The overall design of the contents page I will use in my final magazine, this is because I like the use of small pictures giving a summary of whats on the page rather than just rows and rows of words. I think it is effective for the target audience as teenagers arent going to be wanted to read pages and pages of text.

Information about Kerrang!: Circulation: 40,203 (Jan-Jun '12)

Readership: 387,000

Gender: 42.6% Women 57.4% men Even though the percentage difference between men and women isnt massive it still shows that the majority of readership is done by men, hence why more of the magazine is targeted by men

Class: Age: 15-24: 63.2% 25-34: 17.4% 35-44: 11.2% 45-54: 6.8% 55-64: 1.4% This shows that the majority of the magazines readership is done by 15-24 year olds, because Kerrang! Have this information they target this group more 48.1% abc1 This shows that the class range is middle class as the magazine is a weekly issue so you need to have a good income to be able to afford it every week

Genre: Mainly targets rock bands and is an integral part of the scene rather than just a commentator.

Kerrang! Is expanding massively by having its own magazine, radio station, website, clothing range this shows that he genre of music is very popular with young people today. I like the fact that the magazine has expanded into different areas. The musical genre that is being portrayed is shown in each section. For example on the radio station the rock music genre is played.

Task 6:

The musical genre that I want to feature in my magazine is indie/rock bands. Here is a list of bands that fit into this genre category; You me at six All Time Low

Kids in glass houses

Paramore

A Day to Remember

Bring me the Horizon

Green Day

Nirvana

All these bands produce the same type of rocky/indie music. Some of their songs are rockier/heavier than others, however, they all contain drums, bass and guitar beats.

History of Rock Music: There are many different types of rock music and the definition is not quite clear as different bands have their own take on it. Rock music is constantly re-invented itself since emergence 1940s. The origin of rock music is traced back to the 1940s e.g. country, day and blues music This type of music has now been aided by electric guitars and a steady drum beat creating rock music The aggressive attack of rock music suggested a sexual freedom that proved shocking during that conservative age. In the 60s the rolling stones expanded rocks scope by moving away from single

artists into musicians; The Stones elevated rock to new cultural heights by embracing sex and youthful rebellion. Reemergence: Rock re-emerged during the 1990s with the creation of Nirvana, which made alternative rock the dominant popular music. Hard rock/punk/grunge music started to appear and make its way into the rock world Limp Bizkit melded hard rock and rap; something that had never been done before. He created a new hybrid called rap-rock.
Evolution of rock music: As rock music became a more dominant form of music different bands made their own spin on things and branched out rock music into a new sonic territory. For example Led Zeppelin took rock into a darker and heavier zone making the tone more heavy metal. He helped kick start the genre known as heavy metal Another artist named Pink Floyd added psychedelic elements and complex arrangements into rock music creating a concept of albums tied together by a single theme, something that had never been done in rock music before. He gave birth to the spawning of the progressive rock movement.
