UNDER-SECRETARY GENERAL VISIT TO MYANMAR

On the 7 December, Valerie Amos, United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator will brief the media at the conclusion of her first official visit to Myanmar from 3 7 December 2012. An exclusive media briefing will be held to answer questions from the media. UN Humanitarian Chief, Valerie Amos, on her visit to Myanmar is expected to meet with the President of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar, H.E. U Thein Sein and a number of Union Ministers in the capital, Nay Pyi Taw. She will also meet with donor states and Humanitarian partners. During her 4 day visit, Ms Amos is expected to visit Kachin and Rakhine States. She will meet with respective Governments of both States, as well as the humanitarian community and will visit affected people in displacement camps and see first-hand projects being implemented by humanitarian partners. The Under-Secretary-General and Emergency Relief Coordinator is responsible for the oversight of all emergencies requiring United Nations humanitarian assistance. She also acts as the central focal point for governmental, intergovernmental and non-governmental relief activities. Ms Amos has a long-standing commitment to development, particularly on the African continent. Ms Amos was the first black woman appointed to a British Cabinet and the first black Leader of the House of Lords. In the United Kingdom, she has played a central role in the Governments broader diversity and community-cohesion agenda. She is currently Chair of the Royal African Society, a member of the Fulbright Commission and a Fellow at the Centre for Corporate Reputation, University of Oxford.
