Course Description: In Grade 8, instructional time will focus on three critical areas. Students will be: 1. formulating and reasoning about expressions and equations, including modeling an association in bivariate data with a linear equation, and solving linear equations and systems of linear equations; 2. grasping the concept of a function and using functions to describe quantitative relationships; 3. analyzing two- and three-dimensional space and figures using distance, angle, similarity, and congruence, and understanding and applying the Pythagorean Theorem. The Standards for Mathematical Practice describe varieties of expertise that students at all levels should develop. These practices rest on important processes and proficiencies with longstanding importance in mathematics education. The Standards for Mathematical Practice include students being able to: 1. Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them. 5. Use appropriate tools strategically. 2. Reason abstractly and quantitatively. 6. Attend to precision. 3. Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of 7. Look for and make use of structure. others. 8. Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning. 4. Model with mathematics. Instruction and assessment will include the use of manipulatives and technology. Topics will be represented in multiple ways, such as concrete/pictorial, verbal/written, numeric/data-based, graphical, and symbolic. Concepts will be introduced and used, where appropriate, in the context of realistic phenomena.

The students will use a variety of other resources to gain main knowledge. Our main text will be Holt Mathematics Course 3 Georgia. Online textbook access is at http://my.hrw.com username: barbermath password: n3j6j

Evaluation:
Student grades will be determined in the following manner: Tests and Project 35% Quizzes 25% Classwork and Participation 20% Homework 15% Benchmark 5%

Classroom Procedures:

Students must bring all required materials (notebook, paper, pencil, assignment) on a daily basis. All assignments must be done in pencil. Any assignment not completed in pencil will not receive credit. Each student is required to keep a notebook. Organization is a must! Assignments must be turned in on the due date, at the beginning of class. No late work will be accepted. All work missed du ring an excused absence will be made up in the time period allowed by school policy. Missed tests/quizzes must be addressed immediately upon your return to school. Students are expected to follow all rules outlined by Barber Middle School.
