Borrero ENGL 1101 2 Oct5 Dec 2012 Revision: Defense Essay The genre I picked for my narrative was a traditional essayA traditional essay is one of the most commonly used types of essays. I picked chose to create my project on this genre because it was is direct,straight forward and it can be revised and edited easily, so if I do make a mistake or two I can go back and fix it pretty easilyand in all probability to be used the most through-out my college career out of all of the other genres.. This genre impacted the way I engage with literacy because most of the things I readreadings I have encountered are in paragraph format and have a beginning, middle, and end. There are, however, some instances where there are cliffhangers instead of endings so you the reader can be lead on to read the next novel. I plan on explaining how my literacy development is similar to building a house. And To demonstrate this, Im using a traditional essay to show that like a house, my paper and literacy have a foundation and have grown from itover time. In this defense essay, I will elaborate on my experiences with this genre, the focus points of my narrative, and the advantages and disadvantages of using this specific genre. My experiences with this genre have come out to be about fifty-fifty. I have had some very good writings and I have had some very bad writings in the past. For example, for my writing tests for elementary, middle and high school, I scored a four out of four on every test. But On the other side, when it came time to write poetry or do something that didnt really have structure to it, I sank like a ton bricks. I feel like the more you write essays and write essays in

Turner 2 different formats, the better you get.Writing well-developed essays take practice, just like every other activity in life. As far as what this genre has taught me, it has taught me organization. You cant write a good paper if it doesnt have any organizationisnt organized in a manner to which the ideas flow smoothly. To me it is just not possible.Overall, good writing to me is writing that ismust be organized, conveys a point, gets the point acrossdeliver its points ,successfully, and closes soundlyhave a smooth conclusion. Writing that hops around from one point to another and has no unity aggravates mecan be frustrating for its readers which may cause them to lose interest. For example, I can only follow so many main points in a passage before I get lost and dont know what the passage is even trying to say to methe reading loses its essential point. The key points I want to emphasize in my narrative isare the correlation between preschool and as the foundation, and the architect and my parentsmy parents as the architects. Everyone has to have a starting point: a foundation. That foundation cannot be built without first drawing a blueprint. And that goes for anything they do. And not everyone has people to check and double-check over what they do, and to make sure they dome make the same mistakes. And the masterpiece in the narrative is I. My parents have made the blueprint for which my literacy follows. They created and molded the person I have become. School then, started building the foundation to my parents vision. Every grade level represents a room or a part of the house thats being built. The final result, the fully built house represents my overall literacy and writing skills. The advantages of writing a traditional essay are that planning is a breeze. You have an opening paragraph, three or more supporting facts with details and a closing paragraphpoints made clear through support and elaboration and a conclusion paragraph. There are really no variables as far as structure when you write an essay besides what you are writing it on. Once

Turner 3 you know thatplan your writing layout, everything else falls into place. The disadvantage of writing an essay is that it can get boring fast. No one likes to read essays for a living and analyze what the author wrote and finding out the meaning behind it. All of this being saidThis being said, I think that for my mindset and writing style, composing a traditional essay was the best route for me to take. It taught me that planning, writing, revising and re-writing my papers will make me a much better writer. That to me is the most important reason alone as to why I chose this genre. This technique keeps me focused and interested in what I am reading or writing. Anything else would have left me with too many variables to feel safe upon completing the assignment.
