TurboSyn The Turbo Coupling with Synchronization

Hydrodynamics and Mechanics Perfectly Combined

With the new, worldwide patented friction turbo coupling type TurboSyn, Voith Turbo has succeeded in signicantly increasing the economy of single drives. Its surprise feature: the advantages of hydrodynamics which are so important for the start-up process have been kept. At the same time, the advantages of mechanical, slip-free power transmission are utilized in nominal operation.

Design and function

The basic design of the TurboSyn is similar to that of a traditional Voith turbo coupling. The difference: the inner wheel of the TurboSyn consists of separate segments. Installed to the hub, these segments are rotary and swivel radially to the outside after the driven machine has been 2

accelerated mainly hydrodynamically. A friction connection between inner wheel and coupling shell is formed. Result: the differing speeds of outer and inner part are synchronized; an interconnection of input to output is realized.

The performance graph serves as an aid when selecting the coupling. It applies to outer wheel drive mode at a dened direction of rotation and an even operation of the driven machine. If the marginal conditions are different, the application limits will change accordingly.

Applications

TurboSyn turbo couplings are suitable even for toughest applications. Because the advantages of hydrodynamics which are so important for the start-up process, e. g. motor protection, smooth acceleration of the driven machine, etc. are still a feature of the TurboSyn and are continuously utilized during starting. In slip-free nominal operation, this means: lower energy requirements or more output, i. e. approximately three percent for mills and up to ten percent for fans.

TurboSyn is a compact turbo coupling which does not need a control unit for protecting the system against overload due to its physical characteristics, the coupling is self-controlling. Both the dimensions and the components of the TurboSyn correspond to that of the well known Voith turbo coupling. Therefore, it is also ideally suited for all retrot applications.
