FOUNTAIN HILLS PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH

IN TOUCH
Fountain Hills, AZ
From Our Pastor
HE COMES! Once again we come to the time of Advent, that very singular season where the faithful commit themselves to purposeful waiting and intentional preparation; where hushed anticipation gradually builds to joyful expectancy for the advent of new hope for our lives, for our churches, and for our world. In order to do their life-giving work, our waiting and preparation must serve to focus our spirits through formative activities which fill the days with meaning. These include times of private devotion, times of seeking the truth of scripture, and times of shared worship. As in years past, we have endeavored to provide opportunities for the FHPC community to experience the fullness of the season in these various ways: This year our daily devotional guide is Awaiting the Wonder by Tim Wesemann copies are available to you at no cost in the Narthex on Sunday mornings or at the church office during the week. For 4 weeks beginning Nov. 28th The Way on Wednesday will ask the question What Child Is This? This creative, multi-media Advent Study will be led by Pastor Bill. See further details on Page 17+ of this edition of In Touch. Our Advent & Christmas Calendar below details opportunities for worship and more. Please note that we are continuing the tradition begun last year of providing 2 worship services on Christmas Eve the earlier one designed specifically for young children and families, and the later one centering around the traditional celebration of Candles and Carols. Dont let this Christmas come and go in the hurry and flurry of many-ness and much-ness. Slow down and set aside time to open your heart to receive the true hope of the season. Come and join us as we wait and as we prepare. This is the dawn of redeeming grace. Christ, the Savior, is born. You wont want to miss the celebration! Grace and Peace,

December 2012

September was a very good month for the Church. October.not so much. In fact, most of the ground we gained in September we gave back in October, and then some. Monthly Pledges fell to a Fiscal Year 2012 low of $18,000, perhaps indicating our strong September showing was merely reflective of congregational Members paying their October Pledges in advance. In any event, we find ourselves some $12,300 off Budget year-to-date for Income with only two months remaining to make it up. Expenses for October tracked expectations. While the above column indicates a favorable year-to-date variance of $4,640 for Expenses it is more like $3,000 (at best) after considering timing differences. Clearly, we are behind where we would like to be, and look to a strong November and December to close out the year. We will need your help for that. Respectfully, John Skewes, Treasurer

Stewardship
share the knowledge of great love and grace our Lord has for our community and beyond. The budgeting process for the year ahead is now under way. And knowing what funding will be available allows us to tailor our ambitious plans. If you have not yet taken the opportunity to make your pledge we encourage you to do so at your earliest convenience. You can drop it off at the church office in a sealed envelope or place it in the offering plate at next weeks worship service. We ask for your earnest daily prayers to our God for Him to continue His blessings on us all as we strive to reach our 2013 objectives. We are so encouraged by your support and with Gods guiding hand, we move forward by faith into the New Year. Jerry Maples 2013 Stewardship Chairman

The first few weeks of the 2013stewardship campaign for Fountain Hills Presbyterian Church have been very gratifying. Our congregation has responded as we move ahead into the New Year in faith, hope and love, giving glory to God our Father, Jesus Christ. We have a wide range of goals to achieve this coming year through worship, education, fellowship and service, but all with one purpose as the Holy Spirit leads us to

Bringing Christmas outdoors

The first colored electric Christmas lights on outdoor evergreen trees appeared in Denver in 1914. The tradition began thanks to a sick boy bedridden in the top floor of his home. Ten-year-old David Sturgeon couldnt see his familys Christmas tree downstairs, so his grandfather, a pioneering electrician, painted some light bulbs red and green and strung them on a tree outside Davids window. Not only did the lights brighten what would be Davids last holiday, but residents throughout the city came by to admire the display. Just as Davids innovative grandfather brought light into the boys dark times and joy to the whole community, God revealed the true light by sending Jesus into our dark world. For the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it (John 1:5, NRSV).

Mission Ministry
Angel Tree
Our Angel Tree is up and ready for you to take the name of a young one for Christmas. This is a project that provides hope to less fortunate children at Christmas time. These children provide a wish list of much-needed clothes and special needs gifts and other wished for toys. This will be our 5th year supporting this special mission. If you want to give a needy child in Fountain Hills hope during this holiday season, select a name off the tree. When bringing these gifts back by December 19, please do not wrap. For more information you may contact Susan Owens at 480-836-2390

Terri Schmidt and Susan Owens, Elders

Mission is the heart of our life together based on the calling of Jesus Christ. We here at Fountain Hills Presbyterian Church are especially happy and thankful to be involved in mission work on local, state, national and international levels. As we are starting a new era here at our Church we are trying to unite all of our ministries together so that we can better utilize all of our missionary work. So here is a synopsis of what is going on here in December with our mission work.

Fort McDowell Christmas Project

We are partnering up with Fort McDowell again this year on this project. We will have a basket with gift ideas in the Narthex for those wishing to purchase gifts for children of a less fortunate tribe. Fort McDowell finds a less fortunate reservation with needy children and makes up a list of desired items. So if we run out of Angels on our Angel tree, you can be an Angel for a needy Indian Child. Please be sure and grab an item and bring it back gift wrapped with a tag stating what it is.

Super Storm Sandy

This was a horrible catastrophe for so many people on the East Coast. Our hearts and prayers went out to all who were affected by this horror. The Mission Committee as well as so many of you came forward to donate money to help. As of this writing, there has been over $3000.00 raised and sent to the Presbyterian Disaster Relief. Thank you to all who came forward with their support. We are also pleased to announce as of this writing that Church World Services (Blankets Plus program) has provided 3000 Hygiene kits, 3000 School kits, 2000 Blankets, 300 clean up buckets, 100 baby kits. This is being updated all the time. This is another of our missions where we ask for donations.

Blue Christmas
This is a new ministry to our Church. Last year Terry and Tom Martin asked if the Stephen Ministries could hold a Blue Christmas service at our Church, Pastor Bill agreed. This is one of those ministries that is not actually run by our Church. We just provide the Sanctuary for them to hold the service. The Stephen Ministry people will run this service. The service will be held on Friday December 21st at 7:00pm.

Weekender Bag Projects

This a mission project that is jointly worked with PW. This provides sack lunches for approximately 75 local children that may not have enough or any food over the weekend. We have provided monetary funds for this mission. If anyone would like to help pack these bags, you can contact Mary Alice Bivens for more information.

Extended Hands Food Bank

We will continue to collect frozen Turkeys through December for Extended Hands Food Bank. Dont forget we are still collecting regular food items every Sunday for the Food Bank as well. This non-profit organization feeds over 300 families in the Fountain Hills area. The Extended Hands Food Bank has started serving a Fish Fry on Friday nights. We are in the processing of setting up times when we can volunteer to help serve a meal. Since this is a fundraiser for the Food Bank, they need lots of non-paid help. You can contact Terri at 480837-7083 for more information.

Support our Troops

We are asking for donations both monetary and supplies for our troops. Donna Sims is asking for help in getting things ready for mailing. If you have a few extra hours to give to help, she would appreciate the help.

Trendsetters
It is close to the time of year when we do our taxes. It is time to start to think about write offs. If you would like to donate to this wonderful program, you can contact Stan Jones or Marta in the office. We will be having Stan talk to the congregation about this wonderful project. He has reported that a new group has formed on the Gila River Reservation. These are just a few of our projects that we have here at Fountain Hills Presbyterian Church. We are excited as we are doing more projects and restarting some of those we have done in the past. If anyone has used clothes, small appliances, and furniture in good shape that is no longer needed, we are collecting for Save The Family again. You can contact Susan Owens (8362390) about this and drop off at Church or we can let you know what can be done. 1Corinthians 15:57,58 But thanks be to God, Who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. (58) Therefore, my beloved brethren, be firm, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing and being continually aware that your labor in the Lord is not futile. Elders Terri Schmidt & Susan Owens ITS DECEMBER TIME TO SEND OUT THE HOLIDAY BOXES FOR THE TROOPS By the time you read this, hopefully all the Holiday Boxes will have already been shipped to Afghanistan and a number of other destinations around the world as well. I want to thank all who took the time to write notes and sign Christmas cards that were placed inside each box. I will inform you in the January newsletter as to exactly how many boxes were sent out and how many cards were placed in each one. And special thanks to all who stepped forward by donating badly needed sweatshirts and other items needed at the last minute. My most sincerest thanks is extended to the Mission Committee in selecting the Support Our Troops Project as the recipient of funds collected from raffle ticket sales at our Mission Sunday Brunch following services on October 21st. And thanks to all who stopped by the Troops table to greet and chat with Michael Dallmann who had just returned from his second deployment, along with his war dog, Sgt. Lode. What an exciting day that was. Many many thanks to all who have placed items in the Troops Basket, not only at this time of year, but all year long. The Troops Project never ends. It is an all year long project. To get to the point to where we are now would not be possible at all without the continued help of the Church, its members and friends. Donna Sims , Deacon

Worship & Music

As you read this we are nearing the end of a busy, as well as a fun year within our many activities. At this time, on behalf of the Worship & Music Committee, I would like to thank all of you who so willing provided your service as Greeter, Usher, Communion and Home Bound Communion Servers, providing flowers for our Chancel, just to mention a few, plus those who gave as well as worked "behind the scene" toward getting robes for the Choir. Even though this was voted down, the hours put toward this project is greatly appreciated. For me one of the highlights of this year was the portrayal of "The Last Supper". So a big thanks goes to "Jesus" and the "Disciples", plus those behind the scenes who took part. We are looking forward to the New Year with the vision for the Alternative Service, which is to begin in January, 2013. Merry Christmas to all and have a fun and happy Holiday Season. -Letha Neely, Elder

Membership
If youre not yet a member of our Fountain Hills Presbyterian church family, but have been attending for a while, we want you to know that we value each and every one of you and we are very happy to have you with us. Maybe you are interested in membership but are unsure how this works, this article will show you how. I will list several scenarios for you and maybe one of them will pertain to your situation: *If you are attending our church and dont have membership in another church, you can join our church by profession of faith and receiving the Sacrament of Baptism or, if youve already been baptized, you can join by reaffirmation of faith in Jesus Christ. *If you belong to another church, but would like to transfer your membership to our church, we can arrange for a letter of transfer from your current membership-church to ours. *If you are a winter visitor and are an active member of another church back home, you can become an affiliate member at our church here and maintain your full active membership there. An affiliate member is entitled to all of the rights and privileges of active members with the exception of the right to vote and hold office. We periodically have inquiry meetings 10:30 am in the Fellowship Center. The meeting lasts about one hour and if you choose to become a member, we would present you to Session and the congregation on an upcoming Sunday. Please feel free to contact us, Susan Phillips, at 480-837-1225 or Gail Botsford at 412-613-3312 or call the church office at 480-837-1763.

Please pick up as many correction pages as cookbooks you have purchased. God became a man. Divinity arrived. Heaven opened herself and placed her most precious one in a human womb. The omnipotent, in one instant, became flesh and blood. The one who was larger than the universe became a microscopic embryo. New Members
Martha Baxter
Martha has lived in Fountain Hills for 28 years. She has belonged to Presbyterian churches in Harlingen, TX; Pittsburgh, PA; Hamption, VA; and Fort McDowell and Fountain Hills Presbyterian Church, AZ. When asked What brought you to our church," she responded, the spirit of the Deacons, the Bible Studies and Evelyn Hrunek, Thank you Evelyn. We asked her, What one thing about you would you like to share with the congregation? She responded, My experience connected with Tea-Chee, who was a missionary in China. Martha met her in 1947 at a Presbyterian conference for teenagers. Martha was a teenager at that time and wanted to be a missionary. Tea-Chees picture was in Presbyterian Life Magazine in 1961 because she had just been released from prison after 12 years due to the Communist take over of China.

Bonnie & Charles Matty

Charles is better known to his friends & family as Bill. The Mattys were lifelong residents of Rockford, IL. They have been married for 45 years and have 3 children and 4 grandchildren who all live in Colorado. They are newcomers to Fountain Hills arriving 6 weeks ago and are now PERMANENT snowbirds. Before moving from Rockford they had been doing their bucket list traveling in their motor home to national parks and visiting their kids. They both enjoy reading and Bonnie was a Deacon and Bill served as an Elder at the Bethany Presbyterian Church in Loves Park, IL and also, Westminster Presbyterian Church in Rockford. Bonnie worked for Easter Seals in Rockford for 24 years as a home visitor doula (Labor Coach) and she helped establish a community based Doula Program for the Teen Family Support Program in Rockford. She attended over 75 births while working as a Doula. She also enjoys pottery, arts and crafts and she used to sew a lot. She looks forward to establishing their new home and getting another Labrador for company. Bill practiced general dentistry for 42 years, including 2 years in the U.S. Army. Golf is his passion and he also enjoys being a pseudo handyman. After working for 42 years, he is just grateful to be enjoying retirement in good health. Venture Crew
The FHPC Venture Crew #2333 continues its high adventures. The crew would like to extend a big thank you to everyone in the congregation who came out and supported our carwash event on Sunday, November 18th. We were able to raise over $600. This will go a long way to help defray our startup costs. Thank you one and all!!! On Saturday November 17th, 13 crew members and adult advisors went to South Mountain in Phoenix to partake in a Boy Scout operated COPE course. This Challenging Outdoor Personal Experience was filled with team building exercises and very challenging events. The day culminated in high-wire walking and very strenuous agility elements that were 30 feet above the ground. Upcoming events include a 10 mile night hike to the top of Thompson Peak on Friday, December 7th. With the peak topping out at over 4000 feet, this hike will have an elevation change of over 2000 feet and will test the stamina of even the most physically fit. We will also be skiing for two days at the Arizona SnowBowl near Flagstaff on January 26th and 27th. Crew members will be stay overnight at the Camp Navajo barracks and will be doing this trip in conjunction with the Boy Scout and Girl Scout troops from town. For more information about the Venture crew please contact Chuck Eberspacher at 480-888-6669 or chuckebers@cox.net.

Christian Formation
I want to welcome our winter residents back. It is wonderful to see the Choir Loft so full and the church pews getting fuller. Do stop and join in any Carol Hencz, Elder of our many functions. We welcome all who wish to participate. Here is what is going on at Fountain Hills Presbyterian Church: Pastor Bills Bible Study We continue to study the book of John. This study is so interesting because of the way John has of telling us what has occurred while Jesus walked on earth. We meet most Sunday mornings in the Adult Center at 10:30 am after Fellowship. So we invite you to bring your coffee or punch and some cookies and come down and join us as we learn from the book of John. As we have several different Bibles, we sometimes hear it told in different words. It is most interesting. Sunday Morning Kids Communities Sunday mornings at 10:35 AM any child who wishes to enjoy ministry for children, can meet in the Education rooms. Carol Hencz and Leah Carillo are two of the main leaders, as well as Debby DeBernardi. They have programming called RI O . The children who have been attending have been enjoying themselves while they are learning. So, if you would like to attend Pastors Bible study, you now have a place for your children or grandchildren to attend. The Way (formerly Wednesday evening Family Night) We have finished our 10-week series with Carl Johnson. His series was called The Bible from Scratch, a very successful series. December will bring an Advent Study with Pastor Bill. Mark your calendar and plan to attend. The elementary students are busy with their programming called The Tru Story and the Junior High and Senior High are busy with their programming as well. We all meet in the Fellowship Center at 6:00 pm for an evening meal and fellowship time before splitting up at 6:30 pm for our classes. If you come for dinner we ask for a small donation of $5.00 per adults. (All children eat free). Come and join us for a real family gathering of food and knowledge. Mens Bible Study of Advent A Time of Waiting Advent is a time of waiting and expectant preparation for the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ. It is the start of the Western liturgical (church) year. Advent means coming. In the Presbyterian, Roman Catholic, Anglican, Lutheran, and Moravian churches, Advent starts on the fourth Sunday before December 25. This year Advent extends from December 2 to December 23. The Eastern churchs equivalent of Advent is called the Nativity Fast. In the Eastern Orthodox, Oriental Orthodox and Eastern Catholic Churches the Nativity Fast is a period of abstinence and penance practiced for 40 days instead of the four weeks of Advent in the Western Churches. The Eastern Church teaches that one must not only fast from food, but also from anger, greed, and covetousness. In the Mens Bible Study, which meets each Thursday at 7:00a.m. in the Adult Center, we agreed that it would be fun to spend some time in preparation for Advent and in studying the related prophecies of the Old Testament and their fulfillment in the New Testament. By studying these Scriptures since November, we have found much interesting material more than anticipated -- leading to the birth of Christ. We welcome all men who want to know more about Advent and the coming of the Prince of Peace. Wont you join us in this waiting with a cup of coffee and a doughnut? Peace, Hope, Faith, and Love John Bivens In closing, I want to take this opportunity to tell you that this is a new experience for me!! A month ago I became the Christian Formation Elder. I am asking a lot of questions for a lot of help and I am finding so many wonderful people ready and willing to help. I feel blessed. -Carol Hencz, Elder

From the Director of Christian Formation

During the holidays, I miss my family more and long to be re-united with them. This craving heightens my awareness of my (and our - the Churchs) union with Christ. I sense anew the joy of Christs birth and the anticipation for His return. I confess I am not always patient in waiting for seeing grandkids, gift giving or much of anything in this instant culture of ours! God is working on and in me in this waiting in all of life. As-we wait-in-anticipation this Advent season, I am reminded of Pauls encouragement to the church: You are not lacking in any spiritual gift as you wait for the revealing of our Lord Jesus Christ. (I Cor. 1:7) In the same way, I am so grateful to have witnessed so many of you willingly using your spiritual gifts to serve and strengthen the body of Christ and the community of Fountain Hills. You are my servant leader role models. God has a wonderful church for His mission! This Christmas, may you experience the God- with -us life and the peace of knowing Jesus as Savior because God first came to live among us and bring us into a relationship with Him. Join me this holy season in a spirit of joy, in the midst of all circumstances, in anticipation of the return of Jesus. Use the gifts He gave us to serve each other and the world as we wait for Him to come in victory, as the King of Kings! driving teens to Dennys in the morning. Music Ministry
I want to extend to all a very "Merry Christmas" on behalf of the music ministry staff, and all those involved with making our music ministry the vibrant and engaging unit of activity that it is. We have some lovely pieces to look forward to presenting in the weeks of Advent leading to our Christmas Eve services. We will begin our advent season with "Come Down, Oh Lord Of Light," a Patrick Liebergen Advent anthem, then you will hear the very expressive choral arrangement of "In The Bleak Midwinter," with melody by Gustav Holst and text adapted from Christina Rossetti's famous 19th c. poem. On Dec. 16, you'll hear the Celebration Singers as they provide music for a pageant within a pageant, "The Wonder of Christmas," which combines the youth of our church performing the story of the birth of Christ while our choir performs the lovely choral arrangements such as "Bethlehem" and "A Celtic Silent Night" featuring Jackie Miles on violin, and the jazzy Andy Beck arrangement of "We Three Kings." Be sure to find a good seat in your favorite pew! As we continue to move toward Christmas Eve we'll enjoy "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen," which includes a fabulous accompaniment by our talented piano/organ duo, Dorothy Parris and Caryl Bates, and finally enjoy the beautiful selection of "Do You Hear What I Hear" on Christmas Eve. There will also be Bells, the Pearwood Recorders and the singing of several favorite carols from our hymnal. We'll enjoy the choir as they process each Sunday in heartfelt tradition as experienced by most Christians all over the world. We continue the tradition of welcoming our newborn King into our hearts with purity, reverence and awe. It's truly a lovely time of year. We are pleased to have a few new bell ringers joining the Celebration Ringers, as you saw and heard the last Sunday of November. They are replacing the ones who sorrowfully left. Actually, those who have suffered an injury or are taking care of those who've suffered an injury, or who have become pregnant and are working clear across town. I will let you figure out who is who. I am so pleased to have Paula Eberspacher, Michelle Sivets and Cynthia Linton join the bell choir, and I'm grateful for their diligence in undertaking the challenging rehearsal techniques and exercises necessary to become a part of such a unique ensemble. They join veterans Kris Peluso, Phil Katz, Tyson Robinson, and my mother, Dorraine Aggen, who will return in January. We always have room for still another, if someone is interested. Please contact me anytime. We'd sure love to have you! I'd like to thank the choir for all the extra performances we've had in the last month of the year, with the Community Thanksgiving Service, the Christmas Breakfast, the Nativity Scene at the Lighting of the Avenue, and the Blue Christmas Service. You've certainly helped to make this busy time of the year a delightful experience for so many. You are very much appreciated. Thank you!

Reconciled - John 3:16

A world in desperate need of a Savior. The Garden of Eden is a story about choice - our choice to either live in eternity with God or eventually dieforever! It is a story about Gods magnicent plan versus the human desire to be in control - believing we can create an even better plan. For us, as it was for Adam and Eve, this is arrogant! It lacks in humility and it separates us - for eternity from God, as we turn from His plan of righteous living to follow our own. Since the gift of eternal life comes only from God, turning away from Him guarantees our eternal death. The Old Testament tells of the sacrices (giving up something of great value) that people offered to God in seeking forgiveness of their sins - breaking Gods moral laws. Yet, we have nothing worthy of sacrice, nothing that can pay the price for breaking His laws. Can this ever be reconciled? Yes, but not through anything we can do on our own. God knows we are helpless to save ourselves. And, yet, He loves us so much that, rather than see us die, He paid the price for our sins by sacricing that which was of most value to Him His Son, Jesus. Wow! Youve really got to love someone to give up your child for them! Now, whoever turns back to God by accepting Jesus, not just as their Savior, but also as the Lord of their life, will be reconciled back to God to receive His gift of eternal life. Seeking shelter Our church council had debated long and hard about whether to leave the building unlocked. People in our tiny town were
used to such practices, yet we were near a highway, and who knew who might pass through? One snowy morning after Christmas, I found a note pushed under the office door: Thank you so much for the shelter of your church late Christmas Day. My husband, baby and I were traveling through when our car ran low on gas. Nothing was open except your church. We were able to stay warm until the gas station opened again in the morning. We are so grateful. There was no signature. The words gave me goose bumps. Intentionally or not, for that night at least, the unlocked doors were a blessing.

Library Footnotes
New in our Library are the first three volumes of The Walk series. They are the writings of Richard Paul
Evans who creates a character who tries to walk away from a tragedy in the search of hope. The first volume is The Walk. The Walk is a novel, but it reads like a true life story. Alan Christoffersen is head of his own successful ad company, and madly in love with his wife, McKale. When McKale is left paralyzed from a horseback riding accident, everything changes. Staying by McKales side night and day, his business partner takes the business and starts his own, Alan loses his home and then McKale dies. What did life have to offer him? The answer came to him with a jolt. He would walk; walk across the country. Living in Seattle, he found the farthest distance he could travel was Key West, Florida. Taking his hiking back pack and wearing his best hiking boots he leaves behind all that he had and began to walk. The people he meets along the way make this a life-changing journey both physical and spiritual. After 16 days of walking and checking the map, Alan was determined to make it to Spokane that night. Nearing midnight, a gang of young men robbed him and left him for dead. Earlier that day, Alan had helped a lady fix a tire and even though he declined the ride she offered, she gave him on of her business cards. She was by his side when he awakened in the Sacred Heart Hospital in Spokane. Not understanding why she was there, he learned that her card was still in his pocket after the assault, and the hospital called her in order to learn something about him. As she turned to leave for a while, Alan said, I dont even know your name. She reached out and touched his hand. Its Annie, but everyone calls me Angel. *************** and why sometimes the best way to heal your own suffering is by helping to heal someone elses. Alan knew when it was time to hit the road again and his search for hope continues. On the way he rescues a runaway and learns of the problems that arise when abused and neglected children age out of foster care. Kailamai shared her story of having been with several foster families, returned to her abusive mother, then more foster homes. When she was nearing age 18 she knew she would no longer be in foster care, so she ran away and began hitchhiking. Kailamai asked if she could walk along with Alan and they enjoyed each others company for several days. When Alan asked her what a perfect world would be, she wished to live with someone older who could teach her things that people with normal lives already know. And she wanted to live near a college where she could go to school and become a lawyer. Alan knew immediately whom to call. As Alan continued his walking, he became bored and wondered why he was doing what he was doing. But as he crossed into the Black Hills of South Dakota, is spirits lifted and he knew why he was walking. It was not an escape from the past, but a bridge to his future. The Road to Grace (third in The Walk series will be reviewed next month. -Vivian Virden

Miles to Go (second in The Walk series) by Richard Paul Evans

Miles to Go picks up Alan Christoffersens story right where we left him at the end of The Walk. He lies in a Spokane hospital with severe abdominal stab wounds resulting from a near-fatal assault. It is mid-October, so he knows he cannot resume his walk until he is healed and that means Spring. His only visitor is Angel, whose flat tire he had fixed before the attack, and she has offered him a room at her house and he accepts. He soon learns that Angel (also known by her real name, Nicole) has had plenty of tragedies in her life and before he can return to his journey, he must first help Angel with hers. This is an astonishing tale of life and death, love and second chances,

The art of Christmas

How can we best keep Christmas? By following the star on an inward journey To Bethlehem to stand again in awe and wonder before The Babe in a manger. By rediscovering the faith and simplicity of a little Child, for of such is the kingdom of heaven. By being still and listening to the angels sing within our hearts. By quietly evaluating our lives according to the Masters standards as set forth in the Sermon on The Mount. By resolving to give ourselves away to others in love, Joy and devotion. -Wilferd Peterson, The New Book of the Art of Living The Newsletter Newsletter by Communication Resources, Inc

2012 Advent Bible Study

What Child is This? An Advent Experience in Art & Scripture During this very special season join us on The Way on Wednesdays as we seek to answer the question raised in the beloved carol What Child is This? Tradition leaves us with images of tender babes in candle-lit mangers surrounded by peaceful animals. So, how does this square with the realities of 1st century Bethlehem? Or with the prophecy of the devout Simeon who tells the infants mother, This child is destined for the falling and rising of many in Israel and to be a sign that will be opposed? What Child IS This? Pastor Bill leads our search for an answer as we explore the nativity scriptures of Matthew and Luke along with the striking artwork of John August Swanson. Study will begin on Wed. Nov. 28th and continue through Dec. 19th. Dinner and fellowship from 6-6:30pm. Class from 6:30-7:30pm.

Spotlight . Did you know?

Susan Phillips, Elder on
Evangelism, has been a member of this church since 1998. Susan was born in Sellersburg in southern Indiana which is about 10 minutes from Louisville, Kentucky. She has lived in Fountain Hills since their house was built in 81-82. Susan met her spouse when she lived in Louisville, Kentucky. Greg was her neighbor. He was in the Air Force (Liaison to Civil Air Patrol ) at the time and wore a blue uniform. She thought he was a mailman! Ah, a man in uniform (any uniform) does it every time. They were married for almost 28 years; Greg passed away from cancer in February of 2004. Susans first job was a cart girl at a hospital in Louisville; she delivered meal trays to patients. Her favorite job was teaching Spanish at Highland High School in Gilbert for about 10 years. When asked about her favorite music, she responded with, Josh Grobin, Sami Smith, Il Divo, Nora Jones, Willie Nelson, Trace Adkins, etc., (arent you sorry you asked). We did have to stop her. When we asked if she had done anything crazy, she told us about being a majorette in high school and twirling a fire baton! She singed her arms a few more times than she cares to admit. That would not happen in todays high school. How did we survive? Susan had 2 older brothers and a younger sister. She admitted that she has had no time for reading books in the last five years when she has been on session. Her favorite foods are steak, salmon, rice pilaf and asparagus; a very nice and healthy choice. She is most proud of being a mother which enabled her to become a memaw (a.k.a. grandmother). Gods best gift. When asked about the best advice she was ever given, she said, Always aim for the moon! Even if you miss, youll be among the stars!

December 2012 Hospitalized? Call the church! If you are sick, hospitalized or home recovering from illness, we want you to call the church and let us know! In a congregation like ours where people leave in droves for extended summer months, it is easy for the staff, elders and deacons to assume, when we dont see someone, that they are simply vacationing away. The truth is that some of you are sick and we are not aware of it. You can help us by simply letting one of the staff know of your situation. We have an excellent support system in place due to the diligent efforts of our deacons. Help us serve you by communicating your situation.
