Introduction
Retailing in India is poised for boom time flowing from surging domestic consumption and consumerism. Organized and modern retail together forms around 8 per cent of total retail sector in the country. The significance of retail is apparent not only from its contribution to the economy but also by the level of employment generated by the industry. Retail industry contributes about 10% to the GDP of India, and it is the largest source of employment after agriculture in our country. The government of India has recently announced few policy decisions that are likely to have a far reaching impact on the retail sector. Opening up of 100% FDI in Single brand retail and allowing 51% FDI in multibrand retail will encourage several foreign retail companies such as IKEA, Carrefour and WalMart to begin and expand their presence across length and breadth of Indian subcontinent. Besides providing cheaper and superior products, the retail industry is also expected to generate employment opportunities within the country. However in the competitive global retailing environment, Indian retail sector is likely to face numerous challenges. Apart from more technologically superior multinational retail chains, competition shall also be from the local family run standalone retail stores, who are also changing their business strategies according to changing trends and preferences. Though relatively small in proportion, domestic retailers shall also have to fulfil the demands and aspirations of repatriate, NRI and foreign travellers. Moreover, there would be issues related to procurement costs, overheads, logistics, quality control, pricing and merchandising. Finding suitable manpower for the specific profiles would be another area of concern for the retailers, whether big or small. Attracting and retaining them is a challenge that Retail industry is facing over the years. Providing retail or vertical specific skills and competencies according to global standards is a concern which both academia as well as industry has to tackle together at the earliest.
Indian retailers are likely to face in the Global retailing environment. The speakers shall deliberate on the prevailing scenario in the sector and also on the development that might take place once the global retail chains become fully operational. The specialists from respective functional areas will share their experiences, future strategies and potential business environment in the field of HRM, Operations, Merchandising, Logistics, Technology and Strategies. It is expected that the seminar would come out with the solutions which may be incorporated by the domestic retailers, both big as well as small in order to improve their profitability and efficiency, so as to effectively face the global challenges. Seminar also intends to deliberate on the viability of inbound or outbound FDI in Retail industry, innovations and global practices in the field of Multichannel retailing, Visual merchandising, Stores management, Category management, CRM, etc. Following sessions have been planned, though may not necessarily be restricted to them. Session I: Managing Cultural Diversity among Customers and Employees Session II: Global practices and trends in Retail (HR and Sales) Session III: Strategies for survival of unorganized and small retailers Session IV: Innovations and Technologies in Retail operations
