Structure of writing

Different kinds of writing follow different conventions for the order in which they structure
information (for example, introduction → body → conclusion in essays).

Structure is also given to a piece of writing through the use of paragraphs, topic sentences and
signalling phrases.

We use paragraphs to signal that we, the writer, are moving on to a new point or new type of
information. Paragraphs help the reader to understand our message because they show that one
point has ended and another is just beginning. It is also much easier to read small chunks of text
than long, continuous ones.

Topic sentences contain the theme of the paragraph. They make the theme of the paragraph clear
to the reader and so help to give the text coherence. The rest of the paragraph is usually
elaboration and/or exemplification of the theme.

Signalling phrases are phrases we include in our writing (and speaking) to signal to the reader
what we are going to talk about next e.g. I’d now like to discuss the advantages ... ; my second
argument against this statement is ... ; finally I would like to ... They are used particularly in
longer and more formal kinds of writing.

Task 4:

Aim: To give course participants practice in writing introductory paragraphs.

Organisation: In groups of four.
Time: 10 minutes.

Writing the Introduction

The introduction to an essay will include information given in the essay question. A good
introduction lets the reader know what the exact topic for discussion is and may also give the
reader an idea of the personal views of the writer. It may help to read and discuss the question
carefully then cover up the question while the students write. As a group, ask the students to agree
on the best way to introduce their ideas. If they work in a group, they will focus more on the
process of writing the introduction than if they were working alone.

• Ask CPs to read following notes and explanation and discuss how to write good
introductions.
• Encourage CPs to attempt writing introductory paragraphs, paying particular attention to the
construction of a thesis statement.

How to write a good introduction:

Let us look at some more essay questions to see how to restate the question and how to write your
thesis statement.

Question 1:
Some people prefer to eat at food stalls or restaurants. Other people prefer to prepare and eat food
at home. Which do you prefer? Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.

Restatement & Thesis:

People have two options when deciding where to eat. They can prepare meals and eat at home or
they can go out to stands or restaurants. I prefer to go out to eat because the food is more varied
and interesting, it is less work for me and it saves time.

Analysis:
The restatement mentions the two types of options people have for eating and tells which one the
author prefers. In addition, it gives three reasons for that preference. These three reasons will
make up the three main idea paragraphs in the body of the essay.

MUET 800/4
PAGE 38

(MALAYSIAN EXAMINATIONS COUNCIL)

Question 2:
Is it better for children to participate in team sports or individual sports? Why? Use specific
reasons and examples to support your answer.

Restatement & Thesis:

It is better for children to participate in team sports rather than individual sports. In team sports,
children learn how to cooperate. They learn good sportsmanship and how to rely on their team-
mates. These are important lessons that will benefit children throughout their lives.

Analysis:
The first sentence clearly states the author’s opinion. This is followed by three reasons for the
opinion. Finally, the author mentions life lessons. In the essay, the three reasons will make up the
three main idea paragraphs in the body of the essay. In addition, the author will mention how each
main idea is useful throughout life.

Question 3:
Some people prefer to live in a small town. Others prefer to live in a big city. Which place would
you prefer to live in? Use specific reasons and details to support your answer.

Restatement & Thesis:

There are many good reasons to live in a big city and an equal number of good reasons to live in a
small town. I, myself, prefer to live in a small town because it is more personal and homey; it is
easier to get around in and it is safer than a big city.

Analysis:
The first statement says that both a city and town have positive aspects. The next sentence tells
the author’s preference and reasons for that preference. These reasons will make up the body of
the essay.

SO, WHERE IS IT GOING TO BE?

Task 5: Topic Sentences

Aim: To help CPs understand the function of topic sentences in academic

writing.
Organisation: Pairs.
Time: 10 minutes.

• We use paragraphs to signal that we, the writer, are moving on to a new point or new type of
information. Paragraphs help the reader to understand our message because they show that
one point has ended and another is just beginning. It is also much easier to read small chunks
of text than long, continuous ones.
• Topic sentences contain the theme of the paragraph. They usually but not always occur at the
beginning of a paragraph. They make the theme of the paragraph very clear to the reader and
so help to give the text coherence. The rest of the paragraph is usually elaboration and/or
exemplification of the theme.

Answer Key:
The care of old people is an issue all over the world, as it is no longer clear who has the
responsibility for looking after old people. There are two main choices: the government or the
family.
If the government pays for the care of old people this usually means that the old people go
into old people’s homes. In these all people are given equal and high quality care. Countries
such as Sweden operate this system very efficiently.
The problem is that this solution is very expensive. The money comes from tax and many
countries simply can’t afford it. It also often means that old people go into homes where they
know no one and have nothing to do.
The alternative is for families to support their elderly relatives. In theory this provides
loving care and means the old person can be an active member of the family. In practice, it often
does not work out, as families don’t have enough money, and so, much bitterness is created, and
the old people are neglected. I can see this happening all around me in my country where there is
no government support for old people.
It is clear that neither of these solutions is good. Therefore, it seems to me that a combination
of the two is the best solution. The government should provide money to families to look after
their elderly relatives. But I also think that old people should save up money during their
working lives to look after themselves in old age.

Points to Ponder
1. Why do you write topic sentences?
2. Where will you place the topic sentences in a paragraph?

Structuring Academic Writing - Answers

1
The care of old people is an issue all over the world as it is no longer clear who has the
responsibility for looking after old people. There are two main choices: the government or the
family.

2A
If the government pays for the care of old people this usually means that the elderly go into
old people’s homes. In these homes, everyone is given equal and high quality care. Countries
such as Sweden operate this system very efficiently.

2B
The problem is that this solution is very expensive. The money comes from tax and many
countries simply cannot afford it. It also often means that old people go into homes where
they know no one and have nothing to do.

2C
The alternative is for families to support their elderly relatives. In theory, this provides loving
care and means the old person can be an active member of the family.

2D
In practice, it often does not work out, as families do not have enough money, and so, much
bitterness is created, and the old people are neglected. I can see this happening all around me
in my country where there is minimal government support for the elderly.

3
It is clear that neither of these solutions is good. Therefore, it seems to me that a combination
of the two is the best solution. The government should provide money to families to look

E. Etc. with further arguments 3.

Conclusion giving writer’s final opinion based on above arguments

NB. There may be fewer arguments in favour than against or vice versa. This does not
matter. The number of arguments on both sides does not need to be equally
balanced.

Another possible structure for this kind of essay would be:

1. Introduction

General statement about the topic

2. Body

A. First argument agreeing with topic (+ supporting evidence)

B. Second argument agreeing with topic (+ supporting evidence)
C. Third argument agreeing with topic (+ supporting evidence)
D. Etc. for further arguments in agreement

Write an essay on the following statement. Justify.

Modern technology is transforming the way we work. Do you agree?

It is particularly important in Question 2 to display clear thinking and organisation. You should:

• have a clear introduction telling the reader briefly what areas you are going to cover.
• make it clear which side of an argument you are presenting. Use clear linking
expressions such as 'On the one hand ... On the other hand' and make sure you do not mix
two sides of an argument in the same paragraph.
• give examples clearly. Choose good examples which illustrate your argument when you
take notes, and when you write, introduce them with phrases such as 'We can see an
example of this ...'.
• make it clear when you are giving your own opinion. Use expressions such as 'in my
view'.
• give a clear conclusion which relates your argument back to the original question/s and
summarises your opinion.
• make sure that your English is accurate.
• ensure that you write in an appropriate style, and that your grammar and spelling are
correct.
