I had reason to be with a group of admins recently. Their company reached out and brought some training in-house for them. As a group, they had not been counted in the talent development pool, which bothered me when I heard it. However, what surprised me even more was that: not everyone attended the training session that was arranged just for them; not everyone showed interest in the session (some slept during the session, others hid cell phones behind their handouts and checked them throughout, most ran out of the room after the session without a word of thanks to the presenter or the supporter execs who attended with them). It made me stop and think I hear all the time that my exec wont send me to EFAM or the Spring ConferenceI cant get her to pay for my membership in IAAPI have to use a vacation day for the division meeting Hmmmmm. Here are some things to think about. * Eat your broccoli before you ask for dessert. If I had admins who didnt bother attending company-provided training sessions (especially ones initiated just for them) and never tried to better themselves through self-study courses, college classes (when tuition reimbursement is offered), or learning new things from co-workers, why on earth would I agree to send them on a 5-day-all-expense-paid trip to an enticing city for a learning experience? Answer I wouldnt. You have to prove your worthiness in the little things before youll be rewarded with the bigger things. Broccoli before chocolate cake, we tell the kids. * If my admins were always trashing IAAP chapter meetings and talking about all the infighting, the burden of expected committee work, the continuing loss of members and inability to recruit new ones, the dues increase and how they fought it, the fact that no one is stepping up to the plate to serve in leadership positions, how terrible the food is at the meeting hotel - then why on earth would I pay annual dues and consider a monthly meal allowance? You can bet your Bippie I would NOT. If I did, Id not only be an idiot, but an idiot who has to listen to negative IAAP talk at least a couple of times each month. IAAP doesnt seem to be a good ROI. * If I had two employees, one that offered to mentor a new-hire, introduce her to the team, show her the computer protocol and work processes, and just sort of watch over her for the next few months, while a second employee barely acknowledges the new persons presence, who do you think I would value more? Obviously, one is a team player and the other is self-focused. Who would I think about investing in? You know the answer the one that appears to be more worthy. * If I had an admin who came to his performance review prepared with letters of appreciation from customers, samples of excellent work that helped bring in revenue, a list of new responsibilities he volunteered for or graciously took on to help out, while another report came to the meeting totally unprepared with documentation, seemingly unable to keep up her work as the volume increased, angry that salaries have been frozen for another year, who would I give an iPad to so they could work from home? Whose career would I most likely be interested in developing? (Does employee No. 2 even have a career? Seems like she barely has a job and maybe not for long!) Which person is more worthy of a salary increase (or bonus) and promotion in the future? * Lets say I have to cut 10% of departmental expenses and Im looking at possibly eliminating a position to meet budget. Would I cut the last-hired if she was a great performer with potential? Knowing I could save 10% in one fell swoop, would I really think about downsizing the highest-paid person who works cheerfully works overtime when needed and throws out innovative ideas for new revenue sources? Probably not. Or, would I eliminate the one person in the department that isnt keeping up, holding his own as part of the team, doesnt want to learn new applications or embrace change and challenges, and who has, in all essence retired on the job? Who would I miss the most? The least? The point is Each day we must prove worth to our employers. Each day we need to grow and expand our skill sets, even as our workload grows. Each day, we need to build our careers by networking with other professionals, solving problems, creating opportunities, and increasing our contributions. If we do that, we will be the one who has our employers support for professional development because we will have proven worthiness. And thats where career building starts.

The Foundation of IAAP is committed to the ongoing support of administrative professionals through research, education and community based initiatives. Mission Statement The Foundation of IAAP

May 1, 2012 Dear IAAP Members,

We have some exciting news! As you may have already heard, the Retirement Trust Foundation and Research and Educational Foundation are being merged into one non-profit organization: The Foundation of IAAP. We havent nailed down all the details yet, such as program specifics, because were currently under construction. Put on your hard hat and take a tour of whats ahead. The Foundation of IAAP will support the profession in the same way the RTF and R&E foundations do currently. The Foundation of IAAP will offer education, research and training to the administrative professional community, in addition to community based initiatives inclusive of the retirement housing at Vista Grande. Through the donations of IAAP members and other stakeholders in IAAP, such as our valued corporate partners, we will continue to support admins now and into the future. Helping our own members helping members is a commitment pursued for decades by IAAPs two foundations. The RTF has been committed since 1947 to helping our own by providing retirement housing assistance to admins in need. The R&E has been supporting admins with research, scholarships and benchmarking studies since 1966. These two non-profit arms of IAAP are both dedicated to helping admins all through their professional life and beyond. Why the change? Over the years weve often been asked: Why two non-profits? Its confusing. Where do we send our donations? We feel like we have to choose one foundation over the other. Which foundation does IAAP value more? Throughout the last year the IAAP Board of Directors and the RTF Board of Trustees sought answers by examining these two foundations and their missions. What became apparent was if the two foundations were combined, we would eliminate the duplicative administrative fees and would create a more focused fundraising effort to continue to help admins through all stages of their lives, and become better stewards of the funds youve entrusted to us. This spring, the RTF Board of Trustees, The R&E Board of Trustees, the IAAP Board of Directors and headquarters staff met in Las Vegas for their first-ever joint meeting. This was a day-long dialogue and assessment on the current and future direction of IAAPs two non-profits, culminating nearly a year of thought, planning and brainstorming. The two boards made a unanimous decision to join the RTF and the R&E together to create The Foundation of IAAP. The board of trustees of the R&E voted to dissolve the foundation and transfer its assets to the RTF. The RTF Board of Trustees voted to change the name of their foundation and expand its mission to include the R&E. The governance structure of the new foundation will be changing to offer more leadership opportunities. Each IAAP district will have direct representation on The Foundation Board of Trustees. Members of IAAP will elect the chair of The Foundation, who will also be a voting member of the IAAP Board of Directors. During this transition year, the IAAP Board of Directors will appoint trustees to oversee The Foundation. Starting in the 2013-2014 IAAP year, these positions will be elected in accordance with the amended Bylaws of The Foundation of IAAP. Follow this link to view the proposed bylaw amendments on the IAAP Web Community. Throughout this past year, weve communicated that the RTF wasnt actively fundraising but was accepting donations. Thats changed. During our Under Construction stage, while the R&E and RTF are going through the process of joining together, we are enthusiastically and proactively fundraising and accepting donations. When we start the new fiscal year, well have funds right from the start, funds for members helping members. We are actively fundraising, beginning today. If youd like to donate, make your checks payable to the RTF while were hammering out all the details. We are excited about everything The Foundation can do to help admins now and into the future. Thank you for all your past support of the profession through your gifts and your time. Sincerely, Tamra Goodall, CAP-OM International President Kelly A. Reggio, CAP-OM Retirement Trust Foundation Board of Trustees Chairman
