Chosen area:
The area chosen for this project is a rural area of Bangladesh which is not far away from the capital city Dhaka. The name of the area is Chandina which falls within the district Comilla.

Location:
The chosen area is not far away from Dhaka. It is only 74 kilometers away from Dhaka. It is situated just beside Dhaka Chittagong Highway. Chandina is situated on the north side of the district Comilla. It takes only 1.5 hours to reach there after crossing jatrabari flyover. It is a sub district (upozila) of comilla.

Reasons behind choosing this area:


1. It is a sub district of Bangladesh. 2. This place is developed and also holds the rural attributes like any other rural

areas of Bangladesh. 3. Cultural diversification is very much present here. 4. Rich in heritage.
5. Standard of living is up to the mark.

6. Rich in environmental attributes.

Area Description:
Chandina Upazila (comilla district) covers an area of 202.98 sq km. Chandina thana was turned into an upazila in 1983. The upazila consists of one municipality, 12 union parishads. Main River is Kalichari. Ghogra Beel is also notable.

Demographics:
Municipal area is 4.27 sq km.

Population 35601.
Male 50.63%, Female 49.37%. Literacy rate among the town people is 68.7 %

Occupation:
Main occupations Agriculture 50.45%, agricultural laborer 21.07%, commerce 9.3%, service 5.95%, transport 2.95%, wage laborer 2.34% and others 7.84%.

Social Stratification:
Various cultural differences are found here. We can understand it if we take a look at the religious differentiation. Muslim approx 75%, Hindu 23, Christian 1%, Buddhist 0.03% and others 0.06%. There are 3 classes of people in terms of income and earnings. The 3 categories are upper class with a high income and most of them are business people and people who are abroad to make a living, middle class and most of them are peasants and farmers. The third category is poor people who are laborers and work for others. They typically have a low income. Most of the people of Chandina fall into middle class category. In terms of occupation, also there are three main categories. One is the business people, another is farmers and the other is poor laborers. Also there are people, who are engaged other activities like public service, government service, teachers, rickshaw pullers and drivers, and seasonal workers. But the number of people fallen in this category is not much noteworthy. In terms of education the people also fall in three main categories. Highly educated and the number is very few, moderately educated, which most people are, and low educated and illiterate.

Cultural norms:
Chandina is a sub district of Bangladesh. So the people here are accustomed to the common culture of Bangladeshi people. No prominent difference is seen. But in terms of religion, there are some differences. Most of the people are Muslim but a notable percentage of people are from Hindu community. But the most distinguishable attribute here is the peaceful coexistence of these two large communities. Both the communities celebrate religious festivals united. In terms of cultural norms, chandina can be presented as a peaceful model.

Trade and standard of living:


People of hindu community here are mostly business people. They do business by generation. Muslims also do business but its not mention worthy. Hindus here are mostly engaged in businesses like Khaddar cloth, Medicine, Sweetmeat etc. other than these business people, there are farmers. Most of them are engages in producing crops like paddy, jute, potato, betel leaves, corn, wheat etc. some of them are also engaged in fish farms.
