Introduction
Thank you for choosing the Sibelius Sound Set Project for your Sibelius playback needs. The sound set you have purchased or downloaded is designed to make the sounds of the associated MIDI device or sample library available in an intuitive and familiar manner. Care has been taken to provide the deepest possible integration so you can spend more time writing music and less time dealing with complex technical details. From time to time sound sets are updated to improve integration, add new features or provide fixes for problems that have been discovered. Please check the Sound Set Project webpage (http://soundsets.jonathanloving.com) for news regarding any updates or sign up for the email newsletter for the most up-to-date information. If you have any suggestions or comments about the sound sets, ideas for improvement or any other feedback, please use the contact information in the back of this setup guide. Your feedback is valued and all comments are taken into consideration for future improvements. I hope you enjoy working with these resources and find that technology no longer has to hinder the creative process; instead, it can enhance it.
All the best, Jonathan Loving The Sibelius Sound Set Project

Creating a New Score Converting Scores Playback Configuration and Multis Combining Libraries
Converting Scores
In order to use all of the sounds defined in the sound set with an existing score you must use the provided House Style file. Import the EWQLSO [Play] v3 House Style for your version of Sibelius and the library from House Style>Import in Sibeliuss menu. Select EWQLSO [Play] v3 from the list of House Styles and select the import options as shown in the images below. Its very important that you select only the options indicated in order to preserve the layout and formatting of your score. Sibelius 5 Sibelius 6
Unpitched percussion instruments as well as any brass or woodwind staffs that you want to playback using ensemble patches will need to be modified. To convert an instrument select the entire staff (triple-click) and create an instrument change from Create>Other>Instrument Change in Sibeliuss menu. Select the appropriate unpitched percussion, brass or woodwind ensemble instrument from the EWQLSO [Play] instrument group and click OK. Do this for as many staffs as required in your score.
Multi Types
There are two types of multis included for each instrument subsection, a Master and Lite version. Both types of multis include all instruments defined in the Playback Configurations, however the Lite multis only load essential articulations by default reducing the demands on system resources significantly. In almost all circumstances it is recommended to start with the Lite multis. Articulations designated as essential vary between instrument families but are consistent for all instruments within a family. The following chart indicates which articulations are considered essential for each instrument family.
ESSENTIAL ARTICULATIONS
Articulation Legato Mute Mute Staccato Pizzicato Release Tails Staccato Sustain Tremolo Trills Woodwinds x Brass x x x x x x Strings x
x x x x
If an articulation is needed that is not in the lists above it can be loaded manually for the instrument(s) that need it. Open the PLAY instance, select the instrument from the list at the top right of the interface and tick the Load box in the articulations display. This articulation will load and retain its default keyswitch assignment allowing Sibelius to use it immediately.

Combining Libraries
The EWQLSO [Play] v3 sound set can be easily combined with any other library or combination of libraries to expand the number of sounds available. Combining sound sets is a relatively straight-forward process, however there is a right and a wrong way to do it. If not done correctly, your score may suffer from incorrect or incomplete playback, and/or incorrect instrument allocation. To combine other sound sets with the EWQLSO [Play] v3 sound set, begin by going to Play>Playback Devices in Sibeliuss menu and select one of the EWQLSO Playback Configurations provided with the sound set. Once selected, click New and supply a name that describes the configuration you are creating, i.e. Play - EWQLSO v3 and Sib Essentials. Its important to always begin with one of the provided configurations so that the settings unique to the EWQLSO [Play] v3 sound set are not lost. NOTE: If you are combining EWQLSO with a device/sound set for which Sibelius will be auto-loading sounds, DO NOT create this new configuration while a score is open. Close all scores before doing the steps below. In your new configuration activate the appropriate device for the sound library you wish to use and assign the appropriate sound set to it. If this is a device/sound set that requires a Manual Sound Set to be defined, do so now for all instruments that will play from the device(s) you have added and load the sounds into the device to the channels youve assigned. A Manual Sound Set is not necessary for libraries Sibelius will be loading automatically. Depending on what additional sound set(s) you have added, its possible that some instrument sounds will be available in both EWQLSO and the added library. If this is the case, you must use the Preferred Sounds tab of the Playback Devices dialog to instruct Sibelius which device to use for a sound that is available in both libraries. By default, solo and ensemble woodwinds, brass, and strings are already assigned through Preferred Sounds to the appropriate PLAY instance in the provided EWQLSO playback configurations. Keyboard, unpitched and pitched percussion instruments, however, are not. If, for example, your score contains a Piano and you add the Sibelius Essentials to your playback configuration Sibelius has pianos available in both sound sets from which to choose and may not assign the staff to the sound source you want to use. To remedy this, use the Preferred Sounds settings to select the ID keyboard.piano.* and assign it either to Play (5) if you want it to play from EWQLSO, or Sibelius Player if you want to use the Sibelius Essentials piano. Continue editing the preferred sounds settings until all duplicate instruments are assigned to the appropriate device. Save the playback configuration and your scores will now allocate correctly using the desired settings. IMPORTANT NOTE: Never use the Sibelius Mixer to assign a staff to a specfic device or sound in a library as this will cause allocation and other playback issues with your score. This should always be done using Preferred Sounds.

drum Maps
Every unpitched percussion patch in Symphonic Orchestra has been assigned a staff and drum map in the EWQLSO [Play] v3 House Style. These mappings use a combination of staff position, notehead, and articulation to call specific sounds from each instrument patch. When working with unpitched instruments only one patch can be active at any one time on one staff. If you need multiple percussion instruments in the same percussion part, use Instrument Changes from Create>Other>Instrument Change in Sibeliuss menu to switch to and from the different instruments. Alternatively you can add each unpitched percussion instrument to your score as a separate staff. If the instrument you need is not included in the default Playback Configuration you will need to use the Manual Sound Sets tab of the Playback Devices dialog to assign the needed instrument to a channel and load the sound manually. In the drum maps that follow, patch/articulation is above and notehead number is below the staff. Depending on which version of Symphonic Orchestra you are using, these may not all be available.

Articulation Resets
EWQLSO contains many sounds and techniques that do not directly correspond to a standard notation marking as well as standard techniques that are better called using a text instruction. When using a text instruction for a change in sound that text instruction will remain in effect until explicity turned off. For example, a pizzicato instruction will play pizzicato until an arco instruction is found. Using different text instructions without resetting the sound will result in inconsistent playback of your score. Although it may seem that everything is switching correctly, certain combinations of sounds will not work and the issue will build throughout the score until playback is anything but what you have indicated. To avoid these issues use the text instruction normal or another appropriate text entry (such as arco) to reset sound changes called by text instructions. The normal instruction can be hidden in the score by placing a tilde before the word, ~normal. This method should also be employed when using a combination of text and articulation/ line/symbols to call sound changes as the non-text instructions will reset but the text instruction will persist.
