Sad reminder of dangers
facing LGBT community
By MICHAEL K. LAVERS
mlavers@washblade.com
A Federal Bureau of Investigation
report this week noted more than a fth
of all bias-motivated incidents in 2011
were motivated by the victims sexual
orientation.
Statistics the FBIs Uniform Crime
Reporting Program published indicate
20.8 percent of the 6,216 bias incidents
reported to the agency last year were
motivated by sexual orientation, compared
to 46.9 percent prompted by race. The
agency noted in its 2010 report that
19.3 percent of reported incidents were
prompted by anti-gay bias, compared to
47.3 percent that were racially motivated
and 20 percent based on religion.
The 2011 FBI hate crimes data is a
sad reminder that even as we make great
strides towards equality under the law,
LGBT people [continue to] face dangers
in America, Human Rights Campaign
President Chad Grifn said. We must
rid our country of the violence that has
devastated our community for far too
long.
The FBI released its report less than
three weeks after an Alabama womans
girlfriends brother allegedly attacked her
in what some maintain was an anti-gay
hate crime. (Mallory Owens told a reporter
with WKRG in Mobile, Ala., after she left
the hospital that Travis Hawkins, Jr., did
not attack her on Thanksgiving night
because of her sexual orientation.)
A 23-year-old gay Latino man was
assaulted outside his Columbia Heights
apartment on Oct. 27 in what D.C. police
have categorized as a hate crime based
on the victims sexual orientation and
ethnicity.
Metropolitan Police Department
statistics indicate there have been 42
bias-related crimes based on sexual
orientation between January and October
in D.C., compared to 35 over the same
period in 2011. The MPD reports there
have been nine anti-transgender crimes in
the nations capital between January and
October, compared to seven during the
same period last year.
The latest FBI report does not include
statistics on bias-related incidents based
on gender identity and expression, but the
agency will begin to collect them next year
as outlined in the Matthew Shepard and
James Byrd, Jr., Hate Crimes Prevention
Act that President Obama signed in 2009.
The FBI will begin to report them in 2014.
The FBIs hate crime report, like MPDs,
does not represent the actual occurrence
of hate crimes, Hassan Naveed, vice
chair of Gays and Lesbians Opposing
Violence, told the Washington Blade.
There is mass under-reporting of all hate
crimes motivated by race or sexual
orientation since many people from
underrepresented communities do not
feel comfortable reporting these attacks
to the police.
The National Coalition of Anti-Violence
Programs in May reported the number of
anti-LGBT murders in 2011 rose 11 percent
from 2010. The agency noted 87 percent
of the 30 anti-LGBT homicide victims were
LGBT people of color, with trans women
comprising 40 percent of those who lost
their lives to anti-LGBT bias-motivated
crimes.
The one thing we may be seeing
is the impact of the Matthew Shepard
James Byrd, Jr., Hate Crimes law bringing
attention to this issue, NCAVP Executive
Director Sharon Stapel told the Blade in
response to the latest FBI report. But
were still dealing with large numbers
of people who either dont know how
to report to the police or choose not to
report to the police. I would say that
even these numbers dont represent the
amount of hate violence people in the
United States face.

CLINICAL INSTRUCTORUNIV. MARYLANDDENTAL SCHOOL ACADEMY OF GEN. DENT. AMERICANDENTAL ASSOC. HISPANICDENTAL ASSOC. AMERICANDENTAL SOCIETY OF ANESTHESIOLOGY
down the same-sex marriage ban without
ruling on the merits of the case.
This court has been interested in
standing for a long time, NeJaime said.
The conservatives on the court have
consistently cut back standing, so its not
shocking to me that the court is at least
interested in that standing question, and
I also think it could be slightly strategic
so that there is this other issue in the
case that would allow the court to avoid
a ruling on the merits if they decided that
they dont want to do that.
The question of what would happen
if parties lack standing in the DOMA
case gets a little murkier because the
issue affects both the plaintiffs (the
Justice Department) and the defendants
(BLAG). On Tuesday, the Supreme Court
announced that it had hired Vicki Jackson,
a Harvard lawyer, to argue that neither the
Obama administration nor BLAG have
standing to petition the court in the case.
Still, the consensus among legal experts
is that justices would likely conclude both
parties have standing in the DOMA case
to evaluate the law on its merits, even
though many raised questions about BLAG
because its a ve-member committee and
not reective of the position of Congress, or
even the House, as a whole.
Hunter said precedent exists for the
Supreme Court to hear a case in which the
Justice Department has declined to defend
a law and members of Congress have taken
up defense of the statute instead.
The reason here that I think ve
members of the court will reach the
merits in the DOMA case is that the
practical necessity for them to do so is
just overwhelming, Hunter said. I just
dont see them allowing a federal statute
to just kind of evaporate in this situation
without consideration of the merits. Im
cautiously optimistic that when they do
consider the merits, they will nd DOMA
unconstitutional, but my hunch is that the
standing question is more likely to end up
being important in the Prop 8 case than it
will be in the DOMA case.
5. What would happen if the
Supreme Court applied
heightened scrutiny to its ruling?
Another outcome in the cases that would
be benecial to the LGBT community is a
determination by the Supreme Court that
laws related to sexual orientation should
be subjected to heightened scrutiny, or a
greater assumption theyre unconstitutional.
The Supreme Court has never declared
that laws related to sexual orientation
should be subjected to a higher level
of scrutiny as it has for race, national
origin, gender and alienage even in high-
prole cases such as Lawrence v. Texas,
which struck down state sodomy laws
throughout the country, and Romer v.
Evans, which struck down Colorados anti-
gay Amendment 2. Still, the belief that
sexual orientation laws merit this level of
scrutiny is the view held by the Obama
administration and the U.S. Second
Circuit of Appeals, the court from which
the DOMA case was appealed.
Legal experts said such a ruling from
the Supreme Court in which justices
applied heightened scrutiny would
benet lawsuits challenging other anti-
gay laws throughout the country
whether they be the Arizona law stripping
away domestic partner benets from
state employees or the Tennessee law
prohibiting municipalities from passing
non-discrimination ordinances.
While it seems that making a decision
on laws related to sexual orientation are
subjected to heightened scrutiny would
automatically institute the rst outcome
enumerated in this piece the invalidation
of all restrictions throughout the country
legal experts say that might not be the case.
NeJaime said the application of
heightened scrutiny in the DOMA case would
make it more likely for them to strike down
Prop 8 as well, but it wouldnt necessarily
apply to same-sex marriage bans elsewhere.
They could apply heightened scrutiny
to Prop 8, which they could frame as a
very specic question, and then it would
take a future case to apply heightened
scrutiny to some marriage ban, like a ban
in Arkansas where theres no domestic
partnership, NeJaime said.
Some observers have speculated
that the Supreme Court selected the
Windsor case as the vehicle to determine
the constitutionality of DOMA because
thats the only case in which a federal
appeals court has ruled the anti-gay law is
unconstitutional by applying heightened
scrutiny to the statute.
But Hunter disputed that notion and
said the decision to take up Windsor is
the result of U.S. Associate Justice Elena
Kagans involvement in the other lawsuit
in which an appeals court made a ruling
against DOMA the consolidated case
of Gill v. Ofce of Personnel Management
and Commonwealth of Massachusetts v.
Department of Health & Human Services
when she was U.S. solicitor general
and the Obama administration was still
defending the law in court.
What makes the most sense is to have
all nine justices participate in that decision,
and Kagan cant participate in Gill. Hunter
said. I think they were waiting for a second
court of appeals to produce an opinion,
and I think they would have taken whatever
case wasnt Gill. It was sort of anything but
Gill, and thats purely because of the Kagan
recusal problem.

hosted by the
Senate expected to
advance measure
next year
By MICHAEL K. LAVERS
mlavers@washblade.com
Uruguayan lawmakers on Tuesday
overwhelmingly approved a bill that
would legalize same-sex marriage in the
South American country.
The measure passed in the countrys
House of Representatives by an 81-6
vote more than six hours after lawmakers
began debating it.
Deputy Gerardo Amarilla cited what
he described as isolated terrorists that
cry homophobia before any dissenting
opinion before claiming the same-sex
marriage law would further undermine
the family. The Associated Press reported
Deputy Anibel Gloodtdofsky of the right-
wing Colorado Party was among those who
planned to vote in support of the measure.
We are ending decades of
institutionalized discrimination from the
state, Deputy Nicols Nez said as he
spoke in support of the proposal.
The Uruguayan Senate is widely
expected to pass the same-sex marriage
bill once it reconvenes in March. President
Jos Mujica has said he plans to sign the
measure into law.
Today, we are a step further of becoming
a more democratic and just society, lvaro
Queiruga of the LGBT advocacy group
Colectivo Ovejas Negras said. Activists
and other supporters of the measure
celebrated its passage in a square in front
of the Uruguayan Congress in Montevideo,
the countrys capital, as he spoke to the
Washington Blade from Toronto where
he is currently visiting family. The LGBT
population will no longer be denied an
essential right such as this one. We are
very happy today, and this will empower us
to continue our ght for a better Uruguay
without second class citizens due to their
sexual orientation or gender identity.
Uruguay, which has allowed gays and
lesbians to enter into civil unions since
2009, would become the second South
American country after neighboring
Argentina to allow same-sex marriage.
Gays and lesbians have been able to
legally marry in Mexico City since 2010,
while Ecuador allows civil unions for same-
sex couples.
Same-sex couples in Colombia will
automatically receive full marriage rights
in June if the countrys lawmakers do not
act upon a court ruling that orders them to
legislate the matter. A Colombian Senate
committee last week approved a measure that
would legalize nuptials for gays and lesbians.
The Mexican Supreme Court on Dec. 5
unanimously struck down a law in the state
of Oaxaca that banned nuptials for gays
and lesbians after three same-sex couples
tried to apply for marriage licenses. Local
advocates and observers expect the
decision will eventually lead to same-sex
marriage across Mexico.
Even though Uruguay is poised to
become the 12th country to legalize
same-sex marriage, Queiruga reiterated
his group will continue to advocate on
behalf of LGBT Uruguayans.
He noted the country has been on the
vanguard of progressive social legislation
in Latin America and the world in regards
to divorce, workers rights and other issues.
A non-discrimination law that includes
sexual orientation and gender identity and
expression took effect in 2004.
This is the last major law that was needed
to be approved for the LGBT population,
Queiruga told the Blade, noting Uruguay
already has same-sex adoption, anti-
transgender discrimination and civil unions
laws. We are very happy. Well denitely
empower to continue ghting for other
rights we have happens throughout
the world. The trans population is most
vulnerable. In Uruguay its no exception.
This year ve trans people were murdered
because of their identity, so we are going to
continue ghting for our rights.

McIntosh up for
Marylander of the Year
Del. Maggie McIntosh (D-43) was
selected as one of the ve nominees for
the Baltimore Suns annual Marylander of
the Year award. Voting occurs online, and
the papers editorial board will consider
the votes in making the nal call as to who
wins the honor.
McIntosh, who represents such northern
Baltimore neighborhoods as Charles
Village, Waverly, Lauraville and Guilford
and is the chair of the powerful House
Environmental Matters Committee, is
up against fellow nominees NAACP
President Benjamin Jealous, Baltimore
Orioles manager Buck Showalter, Olympic
champion Michael Phelps and Maryland
Gov. Martin OMalley. She is the only
woman in the nal ve.
The Question 6 win will be one of
my happiest moments, McIntosh told
the Blade. It is due to so many talented
and courageous people in Maryland.
I feel blessed just working with them.
The campaign attracted thousands of
volunteers and donors. I am especially
grateful to my colleagues Luke Clippinger
and Rich Madaleno who worked daily and
long hours toward victory. HRC, SEIU,
AFSME, ACLU, and Equality Maryland
provided the base funding and so much
personnel time that led to this historic
victory.
At press time Del. McIntosh was in
second place, trailing only Os skipper
Showalter.
Couples begin receiving
marriage licenses
Dec. 6 marked yet another historic
milestone in Marylands hard-fought
journey for the legalization of same-
sex marriage. Following Gov. Martin
OMalleys certication of election results
a legal requirement that is executed 30
days after the election in which same-
sex marriage was upheld by 52 percent
of the electorate through a referendum
known as Question 6, 23 circuit courts
throughout the state were able to issue
marriage licenses to same-sex couples.
Though marriages between same-
sex couples cannot, by law, take effect
until Jan. 1, Attorney General Douglas F.
Gansler issued an opinion that the clerks
can provide the post-dated licenses
beginning Dec. 6 following the governors
certication.
I never thought this day would come,
Kim Hinken told the Blade after she and
her partner became the rst couple to
receive such a license at the Annapolis
Courthouse. I really imagined my life
being just with a partner and never having
a wife, so to have this day happen and to
be a part of it, it means everything to us.
It makes me feel really a part of society.
Kim, who is the Planning Committee
Chair of the Chesapeake Pride Festival,
will likely marry her ance Adri Eathorne
on Jan. 1, but the decision on the date has
not yet been made. The couple has been
together for more than 9 years and is living
in Edgewater, Md.
Clerks in several jurisdictions reported
there werent as many licenses sought
on the rst day as were expected. Some
observers attribute that to couples
preferring spring nuptials. Others say there
was no rush to get them on the rst day
and others may have already obtained the
licenses in D.C. or in some other location
where same-sex marriages are valid.
Computer changes in processing and
recording marriage licenses had to be
implemented to reect Party 1 and
Party 2 instead of Man and Woman.
In addition, the work in Annapolis remains
incomplete on marriage equality. There needs
to be a change in the tax law that allows for
joint ling of same-sex couples given that
federal tax law does not permit that based on
the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act.

State marijuana
legalizations advance ahead
of D.C. patient program
Bongs and bouquets both won big last
month.
The national election was a watershed
event for both same-sex marriage and mari-
juana legalization. These issues distinguished
electoral returns amid little change to the fed-
eral political scene.
Voters approved ballot initiatives legalizing
each in two states Maryland on marriage,
Colorado on recreational marijuana use, and
Washington state on both. Massachusetts,
which had already decriminalized personal
marijuana use, also became the 18th state,
along with the District, to approve medicinal
cannabis dispensing.
Respective advocates celebrated inau-
gural legalization approvals at the polls for
either consumer marijuana use or civil mar-
riage equality. Dual wins were a ballot break-
through for both and epitomized evolving
attitudes on each.
When D.C. voters approved a medical
marijuana ballot initiative in 1998, few antici-
pated that counterparts elsewhere would le-
galize the drug for general usage before the
city would implement its medicinal program.
When St. Nick hits town for his annual holi-
day visit, the long-stemmed pipe traditionally
depicted protruding from his mouth will again
be empty of any special substance.
It remains a violation of local law to procure
or possess pot for either pain or pleasure.
Three years ago, Congress nally ended a
nine-year ban on the medical marijuana mea-
sure passed with 69 percent voter endorse-
ment. It was expected that the city would
establish a distribution program no later than
late 2011 or at least early this year.
However, with the D.C. government imple-
mentation plan encountering obstacles and
delays at every turn, it will likely be most of the
year before the rst ounce of pot is distributed
to a qualied patient. Not a single sanctioned
marijuana plant is yet growing for harvest.
Following D.C. Council approval of en-
abling legislation in 2010, it took the District
government nearly a year to release the
rulemaking necessary to move the program
forward. City ofcials counseled patience
at the time, given the inherent conict with
federal drug laws, despite the compassion-
ate purpose. While D.C. Council member
and Committee on Health Chair David
Catania was widely credited for wisely mar-
shaling a cautious and deliberate course,
program parameter limitations became an
unfortunate byproduct.
As a result, the plan established the na-
tions most restrictive patient qualications
limited to those suffering from HIV/AIDS,
cancer, glaucoma and multiple sclerosis
and allowed a modest monthly prescription
quantity, prohibited in-home cultivation and
established only a small number of cultiva-
tion and distribution centers. The regulatory
requirements for participating businesses are
strict and necessitate signing waivers releasing
the city from legal complicity should the fed-
eral government prosecute a crackdown.
The countrys capital was acknowledged to
be a notably inconvenient jurisdiction to chal-
lenge federal law, along with the other state
programs in operation and with much less
stringent policies. As it turned out, such fears
proved well founded.
The Obama administration startled patient
caregivers and medical marijuana advocates
by backtracking on a campaign pledge to
take a hands-off approach on the issue. The
Justice Department began utilizing multiple
federal agencies and its own powers to initi-
ate scattershot selective attacks prosecuting
programs and issued dire warnings of further
enforcement. The presidents policy became
surprisingly schizophrenic and injected serious
concern of intensied drug wars.
Making matters worse, the city bestowed
Advisory Neighborhood Commissions with
direct inuence in approval of growing and
giving locations. At the beginning of the
year, D.C. Council members representing
the few areas both appropriately zoned and
with suitable building stock for marijuana
cultivation centers objected to their loca-
tion there. Quarreling at the Wilson Building
resulted in a cap on the number of grow-
ing centers allowed in churlish-chip-on-its-
shoulder Ward 5 in Northeast Washington.
Subsequent seemingly endless reviews of
business proposals further hampered and
delayed progress.
There is now real fear that the program,
once underway, will not generate sufcient
product to match even the limited number
eligible to participate. Ten planned cultiva-
tion centers have devolved to only six. A 95
plant limit at each, designed to lessen any
federal liabilities, exacerbates the supply
situation. Interaction with illicit drug dealers
remains a more viable ongoing option with
each passing day.
Its enough to make Santa cry.

New leaders are
strangers who usurped
Democratic process
By JERI HUGHES
The Gertrude Stein Club election for
ofcers on Dec. 3 was a farce. It became
a farce when a group of new members
most whom have never attended a Stein
Club meeting or participated in the local
issues affecting the District attended the
election night process with the sole inten-
tion of usurping the Stein Club leadership.
Martin Garcia, Angela Peoples, and
Vincent Villano the individuals who
won the election state that they are
active and involved in issues that are re-
lated to the LGBT community. That may
very well be. The reality is I dont know.
My associates at the Stein Club dont
know. They are strangers. By their own
admission, none had been Stein Club
members for more than a week. None
are representative of the population that
has steadfastly and painstakingly partici-
pated in the process or progress that the
Stein Club has endorsed and initiated
within the District of Columbia.
Had they desired to enhance the
Clubs efforts, or make the Club more ef-
fective, they would have been welcomed
to participate. They would have been
welcomed as friends and as members. I
must assume that they were just too busy
or preoccupied to be a part of that effort.
They did not have time to work with the
Club, or the members this year or in the
years before. They did, however, have
the time and energy to recruit 40 or so
of their associates to pay dues and stack
votes immediately prior to this election of
Club ofcers. This might be a neat trick to
win an election, but it does not inspire my
faith in their integrity or in the process of
Democracy. Quite the opposite.
To maintain electoral integrity, there
is a 30-day mandatory Club membership
prior to a vote on the endorsement of
political candidates. This is to ensure that
only real and actual Stein Club members
participate in the electoral process. Un-
scrupulous candidates could potentially
stack the vote with their supporters to
gain advantage. Unfortunately, that same
waiting period does not apply to the elec-
tion of Club ofcers, which in hindsight,
of course, is an extremely poor policy.
This vulnerability facilitated the elec-
tion of Garcia, Peoples, and Villano. In
future elections, it could potentially fa-
cilitate adversarial organizations like
the National Organization for Marriage
or the Family Research Council to stack
new members and essentially destroy the
Clubs mission. Admittedly, the maneuver
was effective and legal. Some might even
call it clever. I witnessed the ballot count.
It was an accurate victory supported by
a margin of two to ve votes. No matter
how clever or effective the strategy, it was
not ethical. It does nothing to enhance
the credibility or integrity of the Gertrude
Stein Club, or the fair application of our
ofcer elections. Personally, I believe
that their strategy exhibits contempt for
the actual participating Stein Club mem-
bership, and the Stein Club in general.
The election process on Dec. 3 is an
irrevocable scar on the exemplary history
of the Gertrude Stein Democratic Club.
Even though the newly elected ofcers
may harbor the best of intentions and
provide youth, enthusiasm and talent
to the organization, their introduction
to the Club outweighs any benet that
they might contribute. Ethics isnt a mere
word. It is a way of life.
It is a measure of how the Gertrude
Stein Democratic Club has maintained
credibility and support from our neigh-
bors and our allies. We cannot afford to
compromise that reputation.
LGBT media, advocacy
groups mostly mum on
landmark APA decision
A friend who edits a major gay newspa-
per asked me last week for my thoughts
about the dearth of news reports and
analysis regarding the landmark revision
of the DSM, the mental health bible,
on Dec. 1. That revision, the DSM-5, re-
denes Gender Identity Disorder as Gen-
der Dysphoria, afrming that being trans
is not a mental illness.
I had noticed the general silence, with
the exception of good stories by Mike La-
vers in the Blade and Zack Ford in Think-
Progress. The trans blogosphere was ac-
tive, as expected, but when I researched
the gay blogosphere, I noticed nothing
from the major gay blogs, websites and
listserves, and no more than brief blog
and Facebook mentions from our major
LGBT organizations. No banner head-
lines anywhere. This was before the Su-
preme Court accepted the Prop 8 and
DOMA cases last Friday, a story that un-
derstandably grabbed all the attention,
and ended up on the front page above
the fold at The New York Times.
What is most striking is that this decision
from the American Psychiatric Association
mirrors the one 40 years earlier that sparked
the gay rights movement by de-pathologiz-
ing homosexuality. So why the silence?
Theres a basic fact of business life
provide value to your consumers, or
change your business model. The gay
media respond to consumers just as any
other business. The publishers, be they
papers, magazines or blogs, ll a need.
Taking that into account, Ive come to
believe that there are two reasons, some-
what intertwined, for the silence. The
rst is that while we call ourselves the
LGBT community, the T has a small place
when it comes to attention and resourc-
es (though far greater than the B). We
make up only 8 percent of the commu-
nity according to Professor Gary Gates,
and only 11 percent of Americans know
a trans person, while 60 percent know a
gay person. When there is little contact,
there is little commitment. Thats human
nature, nothing about which we should
complain. Human communities are driv-
en by self-interest, as is our economy.
Just as coming out has propelled the gay
rights movement, so must more trans
persons come out to be noticed by the
media, and that includes the gay media.
One story my friend related was about
a lesbian friend who had cared nothing
about trans rights, until she was shifted
at work to a department where her boss
was a trans woman. It was now in her
self-interest to really get to know a trans
person, and because her boss, whom I
happen to know, is a lovely woman and
great role model, shes become an activ-
ist. That is one example of what it takes.
Another example, recently in the LGBT
press, was the story by that same Mike La-
vers headlined, Chiles First Openly Gay
Elected Ofcial Takes Ofce. I had the
pleasure getting to know Jaime Parada
Hoyl during a State Department visit of
LGBT activists from Latin America in early
September. Jaime is clearly worthy of a
news story, but buried near the bottom
was the notice that he was joined by a trans
woman who was elected to a municipal
council, as well as another trans woman re-
elected as a Council woman that same day.
Yet that day the trans story wasnt the story.
It had never been the story, though one
might think that a country that has elected
a trans person before a gay person would
be worthy of note.
I also think there is a deeper issue. Yes,
more gay folks should care about trans
people because were all sexual minorities
and suffer similar discrimination. Whats
been missing, however, is recognition by
the gay leadership, including the media,
that the historic trans victories of the past
12 months have hugely positive implica-
tions for the greater gay community.
The trans community has been liber-
ated because of a recognition that trans
discrimination, and, more broadly, discrimi-
nation against gender-non-conforming in-
dividuals, is wrong, and as a result is now
illegal under federal law with respect to
employment, and increasingly recognized
as unconstitutional. The Macy and Glenn
decisions this past year have expanded the
courts recognition that gender expression
discrimination is sex discrimination, and
hence, illegal and unconstitutional.
As homophobia is rooted in gender
expression, publicly discussed by Su-
zanne Pharr back in 1988, and therefore,
is, by denition, sex discrimination, it
is the logical path to full gay liberation.
Marriage equality is wonderful, increas-
ing our sense of dignity and the recogni-
tion of that dignity by our fellow citizens,
but gender-conforming gay men and les-
bians are still subject to workplace, hous-
ing and public accommodations discrimi-
nation in many regions in America. There
is much yet to be done.
Will the LGBT media recognize this,
and help move us all forward? I sure hope
so, as it is in their best interest, and self-
interest is the best and most potent inter-
est there is.
Jeri Hughes is a local Democratic and transgender
rights activist.
Why the silence over trans victories?

Any touring musician will tell you life on the road
even when you can afford rst class all the way can get
to you after years of going through the endless recording/
promoting/touring/repeat cycle.
Two gospel music veterans who, at different times
and to varying degrees, each spent years out of the
limelight, are back with a wildly unexpected joint project
an album called The Hymns of Christmas on which
they trade leads and harmonies and a 14-date mini-tour
to support it. On Monday night, Jennifer Knapp and
Margaret Becker play the Birchmere in Alexandria, Va.
Knapp, 38, released her rst major label album to the
Christian market in 1998 and worked solidly touring and
recording through 2002 at which time she went on a long
hiatus, moved to Australia and pretty much gave up on
any thoughts of continuing her career. She came out as
a lesbian in April 2010 and released a comeback album
called Letting Go. She maintains her Christian faith
but says, though she doesnt claim to be a theologian,
that she believes many of the scriptures traditionally
used to condemn gays have been misunderstood and
misinterpreted.
Becker, 53, was practically peerless among Christian
music women rockers in her heyday. She released her
rst album in 1987 and though she recorded plenty of
ballads and exhibited tremendous songwriting prowess,
she always rocked harder than her contemporaries
like Amy Grant or Twila Paris. Becker enjoyed a great
run throughout the late 80s and 90s but slowed down
tremendously by the 00s. Her new effort with Knapp is her
rst new material since 2007s Air.
During a lunch break last week between back-to-back
shows in Canton, Ohio and Indianapolis, Knapp elds a
bevy of questions on how she has settled into being an
openly gay singer, the collaboration with Becker and how
it came about and what fans can expect from their show
next week at the Birchmere.
Its a highly non-glam tour and Knapp makes no attempt
to hide it. Theyre sharing a van and Becker is in line getting
lunch at a Subway while Knapp answers Blade questions.
Though the interview is with Knapp, Becker quickly follows
up with some e-mail inquiries later in the day.
Its just gonna be Margaret and I with a couple of
acoustic guitars, but dont let that fool you, Knapp says.
Its one of the most fun times Ive ever had and its not
gonna be some pared down girly acoustic thing. Its gonna
be a really good, full-voiced night. It shocks me when I look
over at her and see how much she gives each night.
Though not as active as she formerly was, Becker still
speaks at religious womens events and participates in
hymn recording projects. Her audience is very much part
of the Nashville-based contemporary Christian industry,
the ranks of which both she and Knapp came through.
The two met in about 2000 when they both participated
in a pair of multiple-artist projects and became friends.
Knapp, who long has admired Becker, says it took no arm-
twisting to convince Becker to record and tour with her,
though many gospel fans turned their back on Knapp.
Fortunately its not really an issue weve had, Knapp
says. Tonights going to be a prime example. Were
playing at a United Methodist church in Indianapolis. It will
be a lovely Christmas evening and the last thing well be
talking about is our sexual orientation. Its a huge step for
that church to host somebody like me and just proceed as
if its business as usual but I think were seeing that more
and more in terms of the public consciousness. I think we
saw that in this last election. Its great that people can take
that and not draw this unusual amount of attention to it.
Thats really the extraordinary part of it.
Becker, in an e-mail exchange, says shes not nding
fans and those coming to the shows to be inferring
anything about her life or ministry by her collaboration

The audiences who are supporting this are music
lovers who recognize when the work is symbiotic and
complementary, Becker says. Weve played this tour to
those people, groups that I consider to be overlapping
supporters from both of our bases. They are respectful
and come for the music and spirit or the art of the material.
I dont think they give it much more thought than that and
to me, thats perfect. Thats how it should be.

Joey DeRuy says being gay was such a non-issue during his coming-of-age
years, he truly doesnt remember much about it and says he never really had a
coming-out experience.
I just remember getting sexual in Kenya, the 35-year-old Helena, Mont.,
native says. My African name, which I cant remember how to spell, meant
brotherly love. I dont remember much about it. I just know that as I was coming
of age, it was just more about guys than girls nothing and about it really seemed
any different. I started dating, would bring guys home to meet my Dad. I was
just sort of raised in an environment where that was no different than it would
have been for a heterosexual kid. I didnt really realize this was an issue for
anybody until I was a young adult in Texas and I saw so many kids struggling
with this. There may have been people in my family who objected, but if so, I was
completely oblivious to it and my parents always knew and were supportive.
DeRuy, a full-time artist and painter, says hes gradually realized being an
artist gives him a pass in a lot of peoples minds.
With conservative people, its almost like if youre an artist and youre gay
its OK but if youre a gay accountant, then youre going to hell, he says with a
laugh. People are more forgiving when youre from the creative side.
After more than a decade in San Francisco, DeRuy moved to Washington in
April. Hed painted an Uncle Sam portrait in his trademark gurative portraiture
style and a private collector who works in politics whom DeRuy declines to
name, persuaded him to come here to work. Since then, hes been networking
and continuing, of course, to create art, which he does Monday through Friday
from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and has for the last 15 years. Seven large pieces and
several smaller ones are part of a poetry/art show One Night Stand that
opens tonight at the D.C. Center (1318 U St., N.W.) from 6-8 p.m. DeRuys
pieces, all for sale, will be on display through the end of January at the Center.
Half of what sells will go to the Center. DeRuy says his prices vary radically
depending on whos buying, market demand at any given time and the size of
the piece. Visit him online at joeyderuy.com.
I love it, he says. It takes a lot of work and a lot of discipline and you have
to be a really strong person to do it just like anybody who generates their own
work. But its really not any different from any self-employed person. It has
its moments of not knowing what youre doing, but I feel very honored and
grateful to get to do it.
DeRuy is single and lives in Logan Circle. He enjoys theater, the gym, picnics,
sports, travel, meeting guys, people watching, being in nature and sketching in
his free time.

Destination Wedding Weekend!
Anniversary touring
production in town
just before lm opens
By PATRICK FOLLIARD
With the hotly anticipated lm version
of Les Misrables poised to open on
Christmas day, its an exciting time to be
connected to the musical.
For me, just being in Les Mis is a
dream come true but to be in it right now
is almost overwhelming, says gay actor
Jason Forbach, a cast member in the
shows 25th anniversary tour production
currently playing at National Theatre. It
feels like a perfect moment in time.
Forbach plays Enjolras, the iconic young
revolutionary who leads the students in an
ardent but unsuccessful anti-monarchist
uprising. In Victor Hugos epic novel
(on which the show is based), Enjolras is
described as angelically beautiful. No
pressure there, quips handsome Forbach
before rhapsodizing on his characters
other admirable qualities: Im in love
with this guy. Hes a passionate idealist
who dies for what he believes in. Trying to
grasp on to that magic is a challenge. Its
the most important role Ive ever played.
Set against the political conicts of
early 19th century Paris, Les Misrables
follows the travails of Jean Valjean, an
honest French peasant who spends
almost 20 years in prison for stealing a loaf
of bread to feed his starving family. After
his release he breaks parole and attempts
to make a fresh start under an assumed
identity, but Valjeans attempts to separate
from the past are thwarted by police
inspector Javert who remains doggedly
on his trail. Hugos material translates into
powerful and uplifting theater.
While it sometimes feels there was never
a world without Les Misrables and Alain
Boublil and Claude-Michel Schoenbergs
popular score that includes familiar tunes
like I Dreamed a Dream, On My
Own, Bring Him Home, Empty Chairs
at Empty Tables and Enjolras stirring
anthem Do You Hear the People Sing?,
the show in fact premiered in London in
1985 and made its American debut at the
Kennedy Center in 1986 before moving to
New York where it set records as the third
longest-running Broadway show to date.
Over the years, it has toured the globe.
The production now playing in D.C. was
especially reconceived for the anniversary
tour that began two years ago and shows
no signs of ending anytime soon.
The new production has enough
familiar elements so as not to disappoint
diehard fans, but a lot of innovation to
keep the show young, including co-
director Laurence Connor and James
Powells new staging and efforts to make
the show grittier, more real, Forbach, 34,
says. Emotions are raw. Theres nothing
played or musical theater about it.
Also, the famous turntable is gone;
instead the new production features a
series of 3-D projected images fashioned
in the style of Hugos paintings.
These sepia-toned cityscapes and
abstracts make both the actors and the
audiences feel more immersed in the
story, Forbach says.
Les Misrables is a hard show to sing,
even for Forbach, a Kansas City native
who studied classical voice in graduate
school at the New England Conservatory
in Boston before trading a budding career
in opera for Broadway musicals. Its also
physically demanding he suffered a
dislocated rib and has had other injuries
playing Enjolras.
Its demanding all the way around.
Eight performances a week of dying on
the barricades while screaming out a
complicated score can be difcult but its
the realness of this extreme situation that
makes it easier to keep the show fresh.
You just cant fake it.

A Holiday Treat
For Friends And

Sweets made to order
at new family-owned
business
By JONATHAN HOWARD
Tis the season for sweets, baked goods
and holiday treats. If youre letting your
diet slide for a few weeks, then you might
as well have some of the best tasting
calories you can nd.
The new bakery, Grassroots Gourmet
(104 Rhode Island Ave NW) is here to help
you with all your sweet cravings, creating
the perfect dessert for your holiday party.
Its also the perfect place to grab a quick
bite to help power you through a long day
of holiday shopping.
Gay baker and co-owner Sara Fatell and
her cousin Jamilyah Smith-Kanze opened
Grassroots Gourmet Nov. 21, but have
been operating a made-to-order business
since 2009. When they started to outgrow
that arrangement they began looking for a
kitchen in the area that they could call their
own. Both Smith-Kanze and Fatell say that
baking leads to sharing, it is comforting,
delicious and helps build community by
fostering communication, and thats
why they chose their Bloomingdale
neighborhood to open their storefront.
Most things at the bakery are a team
effort although Fatell is the baking
expert and Smith-Kanze is the business
expert. Fatell is hoping Smith-Kanze
takes on the roll of dish washing expert
as well. Fatell started baking when
she was a child with her mother and
grandmother, and started experimenting
with different ingredients and avors as
a stress reliever when she was working
as a political organizer in college. Both
love experimenting with avors, which
is evident when you look at the bakery
case and see decadent creations like
the Cardamom Chai cupcakes (which I
recently served to guests at a dinner party
to rave reviews). Other specialties include
assorted whoopee pies, chocolate mint
cookies and a pumpkin mufn with cream
cheese lling and streusel top. When I
stopped in to interview the owners, they
were working on their newest holiday
creation, Cranberry Ginger Rugelach.
The cranberry ginger rugelach was an
idea that came to Smith-Kanze one day
when she was washing dishes in the back of
the store, so she yelled it over the nine foot
dividing wall to Fatell and a new recipe was
born. Being able to create new avors and
items is one of their favorite things to do
and with the storefront their customers can
come in and try one of our creations that
may have just premiered that morning.
Fatell loves making pies for the holidays
as well as perfect red velvet cakes, which
look so festive. Smith-Kanzes favorite
holiday treat on the menu is the mini
chocolate bourbon pecan pie, which
she calls cozy. Other seasonal avors
youll nd on the menu this holiday
season include mint, cranberry, ginger
and cinnamon. I particularly enjoyed the
snicker doodle cupcake with delightfully
smooth frosting and warm cinnamon
avors. I took huge bites of this cupcake
between asking the bakers questions.
Both Fatell and Smith-Kanze also love
Kathys Cookies, which were recently
renamed for their Aunt Kathy who lost her
battle to cancer in October.
While the storefront creates new
opportunities for these business partners,
theyre still focused on the made to order
aspect of baking. All cakes and pies are
custom made. Theyll work with each
client and create the desired avor prole.
I ordered my husbands birthday cake with
chocolate ganache lling and salted caramel
frosting from Grassroots Gourmet and it
was superb. Sometimes these personalized
creations make their way onto the menu at
the store, like the Ginger cupcake with three
types of ginger (fresh, ground and candied)
that Smith-Kanze created for a former boss
engagement part.

Well-researched
new book relays
gay U.S. advances
Its said that nothing worthwhile comes
easily and thats certainly the case with the
twisted, winding road that were still on
with same-sex marriage laws in the U.S.
In the new book From the Closet to
the Altar by Michael J. Klarman, youll
see why and how the advances and lost
ground have occurred.
In the years after World War II, gay rights
faced daunting hurdles.
Organized activism was rare then
because homosexuality was basically
illegal in every state. Homosexuals and
those merely suspected of homosexuality
were subject to police raids, surveillance,
loss of jobs and worse. They were
believed to be possibly as dangerous as
communists.
By the early-to-mid 1960s, however,
social mores had relaxed enough for
major news outlets to gingerly cover
homosexuality in their pages. The change,
Klarman writes, was in part because the
Supreme Court deregulated pornography,
which opened the door for gay literature.
By this time, gay rights organizations were
also plentiful and more vocal.
Same-sex marriage at that time,
however, was largely a non-issue.
Monogamy was practiced, but family life
was often sneered at by activists.
Still, the possibility of marriage was
pretty enticing.
In Minnesota in 1971, two men were
married in a church, though the state refused
to recognize their marriage as valid. In 1975,
two men in Phoenix applied for a marriage
license; a local court voided the marriage.
That same year, couples in Colorado found
a more obliging court clerk and several
were married before the state stopped her
from issuing more licenses.
By 1980, Ronald Reagan was elected,
the Moral Majority reigned and public
sentiment was denitely against same-sex
marriage. Still, anti-discrimination laws
were widely passed across the nation,
giving proponents hope, but then AIDS
took the focus off the issue.
And then came Bill Clinton.
Author Michael J. Klarman begins his
book by discussing how the Supreme Court
has often followed social convention. That
made me afraid I was getting myself into
something dryly emotionless. Im happy
to say I was wrong.
From the Closet to the Altar is an
interesting, lively look at the history of gay
rights as well as that of same-sex marriage.
Klarman sets the tone for every history-
making milestone by explaining how its
connected to the event that came before
it, which makes it easy to understand how
we got where we are now. In between,
he makes some excellent, valid points as
he looks at the future of the institution,
including how and why its just a matter of
time before theres nation-wide acceptance.
Starry-eyed dreamers wont nd
romance here, but historians and realists
will love the facts that From the Closet to
the Altar presents.
