Course description: This is an introductory course intended to familiarize students with theories, concepts and key themes in international development. The first part of the course will cover the history and theory of international development, how this influences development policy and practice, the organizations involved in development and the impacts of different approaches. The second part of the course will focus on some key themes, with special focus on development as it intersects with human rights and democracy, the environment, rural development, food security and famine. The final part of the course will cover the role of civil society in development, Canada and development, and development and indigenous people. The course involves lectures and mandatory conference sessions in which students are expected to actively participate and come prepared to discuss the course material.

The text-book will be available for purchase in the McGill Bookstore, and copies will be put on reserve in the McLennan library.
