Bokoni strike ends

Johannesburg- and Toronto-listed Atlatsa Resources say the twomonth strike at its Bokoni Platinum Mine between Burgersfort and Polokwane had ended after 90 percent of its workers reported for duty last week Friday. The workers, who downed tools in an unprotected strike on October 1, returned to work, accepting the companys offer of a once-off R2 000 payment and a R400 increase to their existing travel allowance. However, the current wage agreement, which was due to expire in July 2013, remained in place with no further amendments, the company said in a statement. Production was expected to resume on Monday after employees completed a safe start-up programme and inductions, and safety inspections were completed.

Xstrata-Merafe to participate in buy-back programme

The Xstrata-Merafe Chrome Venture has agreed to participate in Eskoms electricity buy-back programme and as a result will be temporarily closing five of its twenty furnaces at various plants in the group from 1 January 2013 until 31 March 2013. The company has announced on on 12 December that in return, Eskom will buy-back the energy not consumed by these furnaces. The ferrochrome production loss to the venture is estimated to be 100 000 tonnes. The company says this arrangement will be mutually beneficial to Eskom and the venture and will not result in job losses at these furnaces. Merafe has a 20.5 percent stake in the Lion Smelter near Steelpoort.

Luke 2:9-12 (NIV) 9 An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. 10 But the angel said to them, Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. 11 Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. 12 This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.

Christmas Message from Councillor Nkosi Josias Mahlake, Greater Tubatse Municipality Mayor
Christmas is time for love, gifts, sharing and showing compassion for everybody. Many of us have been away from our homes for long periods and we are longing to spend quality time with our loved ones. It is also time to take stock of the achievements and challenges faced over the past 12 months and to plan for the year ahead. It is a period which is characterised by the spirit of giving. We should also extend our hands to the less privileged by opening our hearts, pockets and homes to them. The year 2012 was filled with many exciting moments and on the sad note we have experienced road fatalities that claimed many lives of our loved ones. This period is known for high road accidents and death toll, and this year let us declare the festive season a free accident period. Greater Tubatse Municipality would like to wish everyone Merry Christmas and a Prosperous New Year. We are confident that despite challenges we faced in our schools, our matriculants will make us proud when the results are announced. We urge people to respect life and property of fellow citizens. Let us watch over our neighbourhood and report any suspicious activities to the Police. The golden rule is DONT DRINK AND DRIVE, ARRIVE ALIVE because that can endanger the lives of other road users. We would like to see everybody safe even when we enter 2013, renewed with every energy and ready to work. To the youth we appeal to you to stop indulging in unsafe sex and consuming intoxicants. Play safe and take care of yourself. Merry Christmas and a Happy 2013. I thank you

Message from the station commander of Tubatse SAPS during the festive season: Colonel Nkekolo Jane Letsoalo
1. Dont drink liquor and drive. Passengers must not drink liquor in vehicles. 2. Dont drink liquor in public and dont walk along the streets being drunk. Stay home and remain calm at all times. 3. Stop domestic violence, especially rape, assault, abuse and murder. 4. Whatever you are doing do it responsibly. 5. Dont make love under the trees or in the bushes. 6. Ladies must not walk alone during the night and they must not go the taverns or shebeens as it will destroy their future. 7. Abstain from drug and liquor abuse.

SAPS Tubatse would like to thank all joints efforts done for 2012 and also promising that they will always protect you wherever you are. Tubatse Police would also like to wish everyone and their loved ones a blessed and peaceful festive season. Wherever you go and whatever you do in the last few days of 2012 please take good care and remain connected to your creator. KEEP SHINING AND STAY BLESSED.

Kgautwane women going on French television

Hippo Rollers and the way rural women in Kgautwane collect water will be part of a television story on French television. The TV crew and a professor from Harvard University in the USA visited the Community Development Centre recently. The professor will use his experience in his research papers. Women in the area were keen to show the team how they use the hippo roller to collect water. The hippo roller was invented by Grants Gibs, a South African. During the course of a project to roll-out the hippo rollers to rural communities Ms Hantie Bezuidenhout, the leader of the Elder Club in Mashishing and Ms Clara Masinga, the head of the Kgautwane Community Development Centre applied for the hippo rollers on behalf of the women in Kgautwane. 11 000 Hippo rollers were distributed in the area. Ms Masinga says this is however not enough and they would like to get more to distribute to women who sometimes have to walk up to 9km to fetch water.

Hawkers celebrate
Chairman of the Burgersfort Cluster of the Greater Tubatse Hawkers Association, Mr Mphanga on Wednesday thanked several businessmen in town for erecting stalls for hawkers where they can ply their trade. I want to thank God for guiding us since 2009 and for the agreements we could reach with centres such as Twin City Shopping Centre. We want to thank Mr Kruger and Mr de Beer. We are also grateful towards Mr Eugne Gouws of the Platinum Shopping Complex and Mr Louis Boshoff of Castle Square who assisted us with nice stalls. Today we celebrate with meat donated by businesses where we ply our trades. We are also happy for the cooperation from the municipality. Next year we will approach other formal businesses in town to assist with similar projects such as these. In the mean time, from the hawkers side we wish everybody a merry Chritmas, and happy new year. People must respect themselves, respect the road rules and dont drink and drive.

Mayhem as communities march

A large number of shops in Burgersfort closed, including the new Burgersfort Mall, yesterday (Thursday) morning as marchers from inter alia the Ga-Mampuru community (who were bussed to Burgersfort), started looting shops on their way to the Greater Tubatse Municipalilty in Kastania Street. Platinum Gazette just took a few quick photographs from a distance where they stopped at the traffic circle just before the municipal building. Pages of the newspaper were just about to go onto the press in Johannesburg and more details could not be gathered in time. As far as could be determined the march was spurned by lack of service delivery and the municipality that allegedly just approve the social reponsibility plans of mines without consulting communities.

Your tips to survive the busy

Over December Burgersforts central town is usually bustling with activity as residents from all over the area come to do their Christmas shopping. Traffic becomes congested and road rage is often a problem when road users disobey the traffic rules. Queues are usually long in both the shops and banks. We asked a few readers what their top tips are for surviving the festive season in Burgersfort.

Me. Chantelle Goodburn s: Tuisbly se karretjie is die veiligste. Gaan eerder Lydenburg toe of OK Minimark toe na werk as jy by winkels moet kom. Jy word vertrap in di dorp. By haar is Geraldine.

Mr Aubrey Rahlogo said: Go to the banks early when it is still quiet.

Me. Gigi Hellmuth s: Geniet die feesseisoen ongeag wat kom. Ja, in di dorpie moet jy ook geduld h met enige iets veral oor Desember. By haar is Camron. Right: Mr Solly Nkhoma said: Use your debit card in the shops instead of cash. It is safer. Mnr. Rudolf Lingenfelder s: Kyk wyd en trek suid vir Desember. Di plek is te warm!

Mr Thomas Mabelane said: Shop early to avoid the traffic. Burgersfort is too small. It cannot accommodate all the cars. With him are Prescilla and the children Nandipha and Abongiwe.

Mnr. Leon Kotze s: Bly by jou huis. Moenie drink en bestuur nie. Doen jou inkopies vroegtydig. As jy familie of vriende het wat kom kuier en nog nie in die area was nie, neem hulle na plekke soos Gods Window en Pelgrimsrus wat naby ons is sodat hulle ook ons mooi omgewing kan sien en waardeer.

festive season in Burgersfort

Me. Twanette Dreyer s: Doen jou besigheid in Lydenburg want die hele Desember in Burgersfort is n gemors. By haar is Tiaan.

Mr Jankie Mokhonto said: People must buy their stuff during the week. Not on Saturdays and Sundays. Traffic is too congested on Fridays and weekends. Use a lift club to minimise traffic congestion.

Mnr. Shane Strauss s: As jy bank toe gaan moet jy later in die dag gaan. Gaan weg vir Kersfees en bly ook van die pad af want daar sal baie dronk mense wees. Dont drink and drive - hulle gryp jou bier! Dit het al met my gebeur. Net hier by die stopstraat na Elephants Hill en Lions Rock het hulle my bier deur die venster gegryp.

Mr Ashley Mojapelo said: Rather wait and go to town when it is cleared a bit from the rush or go to Lydenburg if you want to go to the shops.

Mr Bongani Ngwenya said: Stay indoors! Go shop in another town. This town gets crowded over December and the traffic gets stuck. Im gonna go out via Lydenburg so that I dont experience the traffic on this other side of Burgersfort. Last year was very busy. This year, especially with the new Mall it will be packed in the main road.

Mr Jackson Sebopela and Ms Salom Sebopela said: Stay indoors - because of the heat, the busy town and the tsotsis who came with the new Mall.

Mr Kenneth Mvubu said: If I go to the bank I go after 14:00 because it is packed in the morning.

Me. Drieka Jacobs s: Hou matigheid voor o en bly uit die dorp uit. By haar is Minette.

Once a Pirate, always a Pirate in Limpopo

Workers from Marula Platinum Mine showed their support for Orlando Pirates last week when they faced Kaizer Chiefs at the FNB Stadium in Soweto. For many in the group it was their first visit to the stadium. The game ended in a 1-1 draw. On Sunday the group had a nice surprise when they could celebrate their visit and the draw with Mr HM Maromo, a Pirates legend. They bumped into him at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Rosebank.
