Men of Worth bring their Celtic take on Christmas to two local venues
cotsman Donnie Macdonald and Irishman James Keigher are Men of Worth, an international act that has recorded 11 CDs. They came together in 1986 to perform Irish and Scottish folk music, combining traditional and contemporary styles. Their show is a unique combination of humor and music. We spoke with Michael Coder, from Music and More in Auburn, where they will be performing.
1. Men of Worth are a local duo. Are they originally from Ireland and/or Scotland?
Its a wonderful mixture of instrumentation, with some unusual instruments you dont usually come across. Its very entertaining for the whole family. They play for awhile, they talk and joke with one another and interact with the audience. You get drawn into this feeling, into this Celtic world, they make it come alive.
3. Will they be performing Christmas music at the DeWitt Center show?
their Celtic music. There is a definite Celtic flavor throughout the show. Plus a lot of funny little stories and anecdotal things they have experienced. They are like old fashioned troubadours who travel the world and bring stories back.
4. Will it be a Celtic take on Christmas or will we recognize most of the songs?
A CELTIC CHRISTMAS

I am sure you will recognize some of them. They remain true to the music in the story, exciting tunes, soulful ballads. They have some really heartfelt ballads that have to do with Ireland and Scotland at this time of year.

f youre in need of a fast infusion of holiday spirit this month, the Folsom Symphony has you covered. Its the groups ninth season of bringing music to the area, and their winter concert, Of Joy and Fate, is designed to bring out the festive and the joyous in every heart this season. If youve never heard Christmas Festival, a piece that blends nine holiday favorites into one lively romp, then youre in for a treat. The piece was originally composed for

Boston Pops conductor Arthur Fiedler in the 1950s and has been thrilling audiences ever since. Its always hard for Maestro Michael Neu-
mann to select his favorites for the holiday performance. I look at a concert of this nature as a very upbeat, holiday time. I choose music that reflects the season, Neumann said. Some pieces are very classical like Beethoven and RimskyKorsakov, and some are traditional favorites, like the pieces we will perform for the audience sing-a-long.
But the real treat will be for audiences, as they hear complex works like Beethovens Fidelio, his only opera, and Handels Music for the Royal Fireworks, a piece that was written for George II of England to celebrate the 1749 signing of the Treaty of Aix-la-Chappelle. Even livelier works, like Johann Strauss Radetzky March and the junior Strauss Tritsch Tratsch Polka are on tap for the evening.

Streets will be lined with crafters and 10 food vendors, with a variety of al fresco dining choices, said Linda Robinson, the event organizer. Part of the tradition is the fire department here makes clam chowder in bread bowls and other nonprofit groups provide food, Robinson said. Old Town is beautifully decorated, Herschel Young Park is where Santa will be, and is beautifully decorated. Its like walking into a painting its so beautiful, she added. Other festivities include hay rides, live entertainment, carolers and a bonfire. Robinson said scheduled entertainment will start at 5:15 p.m. There will be different entertainment starting about every half hour. Nancey Holland, a new vendor at Country Christmas, will be selling handmade, hand painted, stainless steel marshmallow roasters. Ill bring marshmallows so anyone who buys a roaster can roast them on the bonfire, Holland said. Holland will also be selling handmade bird feeders and peppermint sugar foot scrub, she said. Some 500 families will receive food and a cradle or toy truck crafted with care
50 cradles. But it makes us feel good to know were doing things for other people. I just hope we do a good enough job that whoever gets a cradle appreciates it, Bueno said. Conleys class took over from adult volunteers led by Phil Rightmer, who had created cradles the previous 15 years for the Christmas Basket Program. The Christmas Basket Program is in its 29th year and will be providing a two-weeks supply of food, fixings for a Christmas dinner and toys for children Dec. 15 at the Gold Country Fairgrounds. The kids get great toys that are hand-made. We get toys to hand out. And the project is a good one for the high school. Rightmer, the son of a woodshop teacher, said that he was happy to find a willing partner with the Auburn school to keep the cradle project going. And last year, the shop class added trucks that are made in the spring. Conley said he welcomed the opportunity to provide a project that reaches out into the community. As a bonus, the program provides the wood and supplies to
