PHOTOS BY KIM PALAFERRI GOLD COUNTRY NEWS SERVICE

Connie Watson, center, of Echo Valley Ranch, congratulates Ann Blankenship, right, of Greenwood on her winnings, a sack of Stable Mix Horse Feed. Echo Valley Ranch held their 5th Annual Girls Night Out on Wednesday, Dec. 5, at the feed store where hundreds of women were treated to free food and raffle prizes at the girls only event. With Christmas just around the corner, Rebecca Franks convinces Santa, Shawn Dean, that shes been a good girl this year and she should get a saddle under her tree.

The Think Auburn First challenge

ecently a friend of mine got up at a public meeting and proudly boasted that last year he and his wife did all of their Christmas shopping in Auburn. He was excited about their accomplishment. During the Christmas season, as we think about faith, and gather with family and friends, I wouldnt expect residents to shop exclusively in Auburn. However, because we want to preserve Auburns small town charm for future generations, its just plain common sense to sense to Think Auburn First. Giving Auburn merchants the first shot, the first opportunity is what Think Auburn First is all about. When we do this, we are successfully completing the Think Auburn First Challenge. When we purchase a good or service from an Auburn merchant, a portion of our dollars goes to support a wide array of community services.

A percentage of our sales tax dollars are used to hire police officers and firefighters. The money also flows to help fix potholes, pave our roads and construct streetlights. Men of Worth bring their Celtic take on Christmas to two local venues

cotsman Donnie Macdonald and Irishman James Keigher are Men of Worth, an international act that has recorded 11 CDs. They came together in 1986 to perform Irish and Scottish folk music, combining traditional and contemporary styles. Their show is a unique combination of humor and music. We spoke with Michael Coder, from Music and More in Auburn, where they will be performing.

and take people on tours of interesting places in those countries.

2. How would describe their act? you

1. Men of Worth are a local duo. Are they originally from Ireland and/or Scotland?

Its a wonderful mixture of instrumentation, with some unusual instruments you dont usually come across. Its very entertaining for the whole family. They play for awhile, they talk and joke with one another and interact with the audience. You get drawn into this feeling, into this Celtic world, they make it come alive.
3. Will they be performing Christmas music at the DeWitt Center show?

their Celtic music. There is a definite Celtic flavor throughout the show. Plus a lot of funny little stories and anecdotal things they have experienced. They are like old fashioned troubadours who travel the world and bring stories back.

Folsom Symphony taps into the Christmas spirit

High school chamber singers join in for concert
BY EILEEN WILSON

What: Folsom Symphony presents Of Joy and Fate When: 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 15; 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 16 Where: Three Stages Performing Arts Center at Folsom Lake College, 10 College Parkway, Folsom Tickets: $20 - $55 Info: Folsomsymphony.com

f youre in need of a fast infusion of holiday spirit this month, the Folsom Symphony has you covered. Its the groups ninth season of bringing music to the area, and their winter concert, Of Joy and Fate, is designed to bring out the festive and the joyous in every heart this season. If youve never heard Christmas Festival, a piece that blends nine holiday favorites into one lively romp, then youre in for a treat. The piece was originally composed for

Boston Pops conductor Arthur Fiedler in the 1950s and has been thrilling audiences ever since. Its always hard for Maestro Michael Neu-

mann to select his favorites for the holiday performance. I look at a concert of this nature as a very upbeat, holiday time. I choose music that reflects the season, Neumann said. Some pieces are very classical like Beethoven and RimskyKorsakov, and some are traditional favorites, like the pieces we will perform for the audience sing-a-long.

But the real treat will be for audiences, as they hear complex works like Beethovens Fidelio, his only opera, and Handels Music for the Royal Fireworks, a piece that was written for George II of England to celebrate the 1749 signing of the Treaty of Aix-la-Chappelle. Even livelier works, like Johann Strauss Radetzky March and the junior Strauss Tritsch Tratsch Polka are on tap for the evening.

50 cradles. But it makes us feel good to know were doing things for other people. I just hope we do a good enough job that whoever gets a cradle appreciates it, Bueno said. Conleys class took over from adult volunteers led by Phil Rightmer, who had created cradles the previous 15 years for the Christmas Basket Program. The Christmas Basket Program is in its 29th year and will be providing a two-weeks supply of food, fixings for a Christmas dinner and toys for children Dec. 15 at the Gold Country Fairgrounds. Some 500 families are served. Rightmer, a Christmas Basket Program board member, said that over 19 years of making cradles, he knows that some of the earliest ones are appreciated and still in families. The work doesnt stop at the woodshop. The Foothill Quilters Guild makes pads and blankets for the cradles. And a doll is provided with each one. Its a win, win, win, Rightmer said. The kids get great toys that are hand-made. We get toys to hand out. And the project is a good one for the high school. Rightmer, the son of a woodshop teacher, said that he was happy to find a willing partner with the Auburn school to keep the cradle project going. And last year, the shop class added trucks that are made in the spring. Conley said he welcomed the opportunity to provide a project that reaches out into the community. As a bonus, the program provides the wood and supplies to
