First Holy Communion across the Masses of the
weekends of 13th/14th & 20/21st October. I am sure
that the children would appreciate your prayerful
supportand your presenceas they celebrate the
compleon of their iniaon and the beginning of

Addionally,theHSCexamsarebeginningsoon,andit

The Pope recently began a catechesis series on

liturgical prayer during his weekly General Audience.
Having read the rst two instalments I would
commend them to you for prayerful reecon. They

As I menoned recently, Fr Chris Yates has been
appointed PriestinCharge of the Anglican Parish of
Raymond Terrace. He will be commissioned to that

newministry.

One of the things I have been oen quesoned
abouthere and elsewhereis why I choose to
exclude the assembly from the Oertory of the
Mass, those prayers said over the bread and wine
which invoke the response Blessed be God forever
fromtheassembly.Nothingcouldbefurtherfromthe
truth, nor from my intenons, and stems from a
misunderstanding of what happens at that parcular
pointofthecontemporaryRomanRite.

Since the advent of the postVacan II liturgical

reforms, the liturgical act that used to be referred to
as the Oertory is technically and more correctly
known as the Presentaon and Preparaon of the
Gis, with any concept of oering being moved to
where it more properly belongs, i.e. during the
EuchariscPrayer.

The purpose of this ritual act, therefore, is simply to

prepare the gis of bread and wine presented by the
assembly and make them ready for the Eucharisc
Prayer.

The two prayers of preparaon said over the bread

andwinearemeanttobesaidbythepriestcelebrant
alonewithoutthepeopleresponding.Onlyinthecase
of there being no singing or music is it possible (but
notobligatory)forthepriesttosaythesetwoprayers
of preparaon aloud and thus invite a response from
theassembly.

I would stress that the instrucon contained in the

General Instrucon of the Roman MissalandtheOrder
of Mass contained in the present Roman Missal is
permissive in nature, rather than direcve, and the
opon remains at the sole discreon of the priest
celebrant.

Sincetheseprayersareprayersofpreparaonandnot
prayersofoering,mycurrentpracceofsayingthem
quietlyisenrelyinkeepingwithrubricsoftheOrder
of Mass, and do not in any way exclude the
assembly from the oering, which is, as Ive already
menoned, found in the Eucharisc Prayer. The
enrety of the preparaon of bread and wine is
secondary in nature rubrically speaking and is
meanttobesaidenrelyinalowvoice.

who believe I am excluding the assembly from the
oeringoftheMassatease.
