Liz Amaral Retires
Liz Amaral retires in December from Nelson Commun-
ity Services Centre (NCSC) afer 16 years of counselling
parents and children. Shes helped 5000 families, held 480
parent group sessions, 100 or more workshops, and baked
1200 dozen chocolate chips cookies for the sessions and
workshops (and grateful co-workers who benefted from
the lefovers.)
Amaral (or Liz, as everyone calls her) retires while still
in love with her work, especially that moment when, afer
connecting with a parent and walking with them in their
angst, I can feel the relief in their breathing and the smile
on their face. When I can add some small steps so they
can connect the dots and fnd a way forward.
Parents will miss her deep understanding of families, a
gif that comes from four decades of hands-on work, aca-
demic study and training in the area of childcare.
Te years at NCSC have fown by; the satisfaction is
not only with counselling individual families, but with the
team approach within NCSC and the broader professional
community. She may eventually rebuild that connection
by teaching continuing education courses.
But for her entry-level into retirement, she is learning to
spin, a natural outgrowth of raising babydoll and Shetland
miniature sheep with her husband, David on their Blewett
farm Greystone Acres.

Te Cocoa-Nut Lounge
On Monday, December 31 at the Eagles Hall (641 Baker
Street upstairs), Nelson will have an all-ages New Years
party with 6 hours straight of live music.
Te Cocoa-Nut Lounge, Nelsons favourite venue for live
music and chocolate will be open for the evening, serving
up Laura and Jaimes famous sweet and savoury snacks,
as well as all types of non-alcoholic beverages. Tickets are
$25, and come with 2 food and/or drink items, or $50 for a
family, which includes 4 food/drink items. More concession
items will be available for sale. Doors will open at 6:30 pm.
Starting at 7 pm, the stage will warm up with some of
Nelsons favourite solo acts, including Darcy Hula, Eric
Johnson, Spoon Castro and dOUG nORMAL. At 9 pm,
the dance foor opens with Te Jones Brothers, rock and
soul to get your feet moving. At 11 pm, Lif will make its
rocking debut with its eclectic style of original dance rock.
Te Jones Brothers features Big Mama Blue, Kenny High
Pockets Gilles on the harp, CW Jones and his brothers,
and the director and star of the recent Jesus Christ Super-
star production Kevin Armstrong. With their Rock and
Soul sound, they are sure to get the crowd moving. Lif is
a new band, but with the experience of 4 music scene vet-
erans: Alan Kirk, Michael Frederick, Matt Steedman (for-
merly of Te Toques), and Kevin Armstrong. Tey bring
groove-oriented rock to the stage, and will keep people on
their feet well into the New Year.

Nelson.

Cabaret Auditions
Black Productions is seeking performers age 18 to 70

Tursday, December 20 between 4 pm and 8 pm. Dona-
tions made to the City of Nelson earmarked for the Nelson
Civic Teatre are eligible for a charitable tax receipt.
Its a great way for people who have been itching for the
big screen and who see the project as good for everyone
to invest in our community and save on their income
tax, says president Anne DeGrace. Were delighted that
the City will accept donations in this way.
Te Nelson Civic Teatre Society (NCTS) is a non-prof-
it organization operating as a social enterprise, composed
of movie lovers and community-minded citizens with a
broad range of expertise and experience. In October, the
City of Nelson gave the Society the green light to begin
its work to renovate and reopen the Nelson Civic Teatre.
Tere are currently 1,300 members of NCTS.
Te plan is to create a three-screen theatre, undertaken
in a phased approach so as to open to the public as soon
as possible.
Well be holding an open house in January to launch
our fundraising campaign, so curious folks can see the
interior and what we have planned, says DeGrace. We
hope to have our frst flm screening in February.
Before that, volunteers and paid professionals are
working to clean up the space and install seating. Fund-
raising is underway for renovations, a digital projector,
and other equipment.
Donors unable to drop by the theatre on December 20th
may contact the Society at info@civictheatre.ca, or mail
cheques payable to the City of Nelson marked as intended
for the Civic Teatre to the City at Suite 101, 310 Ward St.
Nelson BC V1L 5S4.

Oxygen Art Centre Presents...
Lylian Klimek: Rescue My Landscape opening recep-
tion will be held on December 20, 7 pm to 10 pm and artist
talk at 8 pm, a blue night event.
Rescue My Landscape, is a mixed media installation by
Calgary-based artist Lylian Klimek. Based on her research
into environmental remediation techniques, Klimek
combines natural and manufactured materials to create
her own re-imagined landscapes. Trough her artwork,
Klimek invites us to refect on our complex relationship
with the natural world.
Klimeks visual poetics are evocative yet open ended.
Tree stumps doused in bright green paint have their roots
refected by a mirror below. Lime green netting hangs
close by, perhaps to protect or entangle. A column of or-
ange and green swatches on the wall seems to announce
the prescribed colours of fall leaves.
Te exhibition is open from December 21 to February 9,
Wednesday to Saturday from 1 pm to 5 pm.

Bill Seafoot passed away December 10,
2012 in the presence of loving family and
friends in the Palliative Care room at the Kaslo
Victorian Hospital. He was the last surviving
member of his immediate family.
Dad was born in East End, Saskatchewan
and moved to Trail, BC in 1941 and then to
Kaslo in 1959 to work for T & H Sawmills. He began Kaslo Skid Contractors Ltd. in the early 1960s, and was
legendary for his no nonsense approach to logging. He was called the Paul Bunyan with bulldozers by the
National Geographic Society. He was also called many other names, some of which cannot be put into print,
but most prominently Panicky or Cranky.
When Dad wasnt working he was involved in all aspects of the Legion and coaching minor and senior
mens baseball. He would often be found fshing around the local lakes with his main sustenance of an Oh
Henry bar, pepperoni stick and a bottle of Coke purchased from the Mohawk. When the weather wouldnt
allow him to be outside he could be found sitting in his recliner cursing and swearing at the TV when the
Toronto Blue Jays were playing. Dad enjoyed many happy times quadding and snowmobiling with his many
friends. He was a real people person and loved the daily contact with the community. Whenever there was
a need, Dad was there.
Dad was predeceased by wives Irene (1989) (mother of his children) and Cathy (2012); daughter Bev Gatzke
(2012); son Keith (2004); and grandsons Donald (1994), Allan (1995), Kevin (1995), Ron (2007). He is survived
by daughters Linda and Bonnie (Rick); sons Craig (Susan) and Gordon; and grandchildren Karen, Bret, Gary,
Leroy, Dave, Lorne, Jason, Pam, Ryan, Bill, Mark, Kelly, Tania and Sheldon; and 22 great-grandchildren.
Funeral service will be held Friday December 21 at 11 am at the Kaslo Legion Hall. Refreshments
will be served at the Legion following interment at the Kaslo Cemetery. In lieu of fowers donations
in Dads memory to the Kaslo & Area Hospice would be appreciated.
Linda, Bonnie, Craig and Gord would like to thank everyone who helped us in any way during this
dif cult time.

Just a few steps can help to re-
duce your energy bills this win-
ter. Direct Energy has provided

Clean or replace your furnace
flter every three months.
Sign up for a heating protec-
tion plan. Te better ones give
you 24-hour emergency service
and an annual inspection by li-
censed technicians who will con-
duct safety tests for carbon monoxide, natural gas leaks
and combustion exhaust as well as ensuring your system
is in optimal working condition.
Boost the insulation, to a minimum of 30 centimeters
(12 inches) especially in the attic and basement.
Install a programmable thermostat set to lower the
temperature at night or during the day when you are out.
Use your ceiling fan to re-distribute the warm air that
rises. In winter, the blades should rotate in a clockwise
direction.
Close the registers to conserve heat and energy in un-
used rooms and do the same in non-insulated places.
Investigate the advantages of replacing your conven-
tional furnace with a high-ef ciency one. Tis can deliver
cost savings as high as 15 per cent making it well worth
the investment.
