3. Presentation title: Osteoporosis: Beyond Bone Mineral Density

4. Short description of presentation: in this talk Dr. Neustadt reviews bone histology and physiology
as it relates to bone health and redefines osteoporosis risk in the context of fracture risk, with
special emphasis on providing tools to clinicians beyond simply bone mineral density tests, to
assess and reduce fracture risks in both their male and female patients.

5. Abstract: There are nine learning objectives of this presentation: (1) understand the personal,
social and financial impact of osteoporosis; (2) review the histology and physiology of bone so
that attendees understand the mechanisms of action of natural agents and medications; (3)
understand new national osteoporosis screening recommendations for men and women, and the
different risk factors for osteoporosis in these groups; (4) describe the historical development of
the definition of osteoporosis as low bone mineral density (BMD); (5) understand the strengths
and limitations of bone density scans, and review new national and international health initiatives
for redefining osteoporosis in the context of fracture risk; (6) review data on laboratory markers
such as urinary deoxypyridinoline (DPD) and undercarboxylated osteocalcin (uOC) that can
predict fracture risk beyond bone mineral density; (7) understand risk factors for developing
osteoporosis and fractures, including how lifestyle, environmental factors, medications and
comorbidities affect this risk; (8) understand the molecular mechanisms of how diet, lifestyle,
natural agents and medications can reduce fracture risk. The presentation outline follows the same
progression of ideas as the learning objectives. Pharmacy will be discussed. The target audience
includes clinicians, policy makers, students, and the general audience.
