Supporting Higher Education in the Developing World

Academics Without Borders Canada (AWBC) is a Canadian bilingual NGO based in Montreal, the mission of which is to support academic institutions in developing countries in building capacity in higher education so that they can train their own experts and conduct research to assist in their development. AWBC fulfills its mission by sending volunteers on projects that originate and are owned by developing world institutions. AWBC reimburses volunteers for their expenses but does not offer them a salary. AWBC is looking for one volunteer for the following assignment. Job Title Upgrade Teaching Mentor Job Reference: 2012-RUB-02 -UPG Partner Organization Jigme Namgyel Polytechnic, Royal University of Bhutan, Dewathang, Samdrup Jongkhar, Bhutan Web Site: http://www.jnp.edu.bt Country Bhutan Language(s) English Job Description: to advise on the development of new programmes in the Civil Engineering department, including: Diploma in Surveying, Diploma in Architecture, and Diploma in Water Resources Engineering. The volunteer with the support of the JNP Administration and focal persons from the Civil Engineering Department will be required to study the feasibility of various programmes and advise the Institute on the scope of sustainability of the programme. In addition, the volunteer(s) will be required to teach one module to augment the faculty shortage. The volunteer will take a lead teaching role and introduce new teaching techniques, conduct in-house courses and upgrade the qualifications of existing faculty, help in the introduction of new courses, develop teaching materials and conduct training programmes for stakeholders. Teaching classes of an average size of 60 students from 4-8 hours per week; training staff from 2-4 hours weekly; student advising an average of two hours weekly. Educational Qualifications Holding a Postgraduate degree (Masters, PhD) in Civil or Electrical Engineering Professional Experience Minimum ten to fifteen years of teaching experience Culturally sensitive; team player; mentor; effective communicator; adaptable Outstanding professional ethics; able to live with basic amenities in a multicultural environment Research Experience Provided guidance to at least one or two masters projects and have experience conducting research studies; Start date and Duration: 1 February 2013 or 1 August 2013 for a minimum of one year on a continuous basis Benefits: Housing on or near campus; local monthly stipend of approximately $500 - $1000 Can a month, depending on rank; office space with computer/internet, return economy air ticket.
